Wow, I’m back home now, and I’m so ready to jump into another form of work for the summer! Like many university students, I also will be getting a job for the summer in order to pay for things throughout the school year.
There are actually options as far as on-campus employment, for during the school year as well as during the summer. Check Student Life’s Campus Employment page for more info. Also, TWUSA has various positions available at different times of the year.
I was actually blessed enough to be giving the opportunity to coach the track and field team of my old high school this year, and possibly help raise it to its true glory! Other than that, I have a sales job lined up which I am super excited to be a part of.
Another thing that I may do is take a TWU online summer course. To make it that extra little bit more enticing, Trinity offers 100 per semester hour off of any summer course, online or on campus! Check out how to apply here. In all honesty, the flexibility of taking online courses actually puts you ahead, because rather than trying to squeeze maybe even six courses into one semester, if you one takes only a few summer courses, then the main semesters become a lot easier. And! If you take on-campus summer courses, housing is now available for $7 a night!
With all of this being said, I can’t help but still sing, Schoooooool’s out for summer!!
Wow, it’s done. My first official year of University is done. It’s been such an amazing journey, certainly one with plenty of ups and downs to make me thankful for my 4 month summer holiday! Coming into the year with an idea of what my experience here was going to be like, it seems reality completely shattered it. Surpassing the highs, and matching the lows, my first year has been such an amazing journey, getting to know friends that I will keep for a lifetime, taking the first step that will bring me closer to my eventual calling, as far as my career is concerned. It has taught me the importance of time management, and has been a real practical chance for me to learn even more of who I am, and what kind of person I would like to be. This year has challenged me both spiritually and relationally. The company I keep has become much more intentional, and the establishing of my character has become much more of a priority than it has ever been prior to my being here. Although I am slightly biased, I don’t believe I would have learned a lot of the things I have learned, apart from academic learning, elsewhere. TWU is a safe place for making mistakes. I didn’t necessarily make huge mistakes, but even within the smaller things, I found the people and the support I got from here to be perfect for falling and being encouraged to get back up and keep running and growing. I feel I can speak for all of the first year students when I say I am excited to be back in September, ready to learn more, grow as a person, and possibly see you at O-week. It’s not too late to apply! It’s quick! It’s free! So why not! :D
So I am two exams in, and finally, I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. One thing I have really appreciated about both of my semesters here at Trinity is that all of my exams have been nicely spaced apart. Of course everything is not always perfect, and one does hear those horror stories of people having 3 exams on the same day. But one thing I am also very thankful for is that Trinity is very flexible when it comes to exams. For more details, check out the Office of the Registrar Exam Conflict procedures page.
Some things Trinity will actually reschedule exams for are if:
You have two exams during the same period.
You have 3 exams within a 24 hour period.
An exam on a Saturday or Religious Holiday that cannot be written for religious reasons.
Once again, I was inspired by my previous post Mayo’s Top Tips to come up with what to do when it comes to writing exams! So pull out your notepad, and take notes! (Or you could just copy and paste what I typed here, either works)
Work Hard, Play Hard. When I say this, I am not meaning that you should go out and party, I mean if you have an exam today, work hard towards getting all of the final little details, that you might not be remembering quite right, down, then once the exam is over, relax a little! Go out to a restaurant with your friends, go see a movie, binge watch Parks & Recreation on Netflix! Basically, do something that does not require much brain activity, because you deserve it! :D
Library for Daayyssss!!! The Library may just be a student’s best friend. If you are looking for somewhere to concentrate and actually be able to retain the information that you are trying to turn into knowledge, then the library is a fantastic environment to do that. I know there aren't a lot of people who like to go into the library, but legend has it, that being in a library with all that knowledge can actually make you smarter (not really :P ).
Stan makes a plan, because he’s the man. This might just be the simplest way to be successful during exams. Go on your Student Portal and download your exam schedule. If you have everything planned out; your study time, your breaks, what day and at what time each exam is at, then there is no way you will be caught off guard by anything.
Hakuna Matata. “Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn, and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds! And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life’s span?” Luke 12:24-25. Although this may be a stressful time for you, I always find it best if you make a conscious decision that you will not get stressed out. I have found from past experiences, that if you have a calm outlook to this whole exam period, this reduction in stress results in more effective studying, and deeper remembrance of the material that you have covered during studying, as well as throughout the year!
I hope these tips help when you find yourself in this elusive “exam period”.
So this is it. It’s all come down to this moment. All the days of ripping myself away from my bed in order to get to class, all the late nights, and essay edits, and studying, has come to a crescendo of knowledge regurgitation! Personally i wish exams did not exist, but I also realize that without them, there will be no push or reason to try and retain the knowledge, which is what I imagine the institution of University is trying to spawn: individuals who have a desire to pursue something they love, but truly learning and becoming scholars in our streams of study. It’s been a pretty good semester, jam packed with activities, track competitions, working, and learning. As the final essays get handed in and the last bit of homework is due in the different classes, a sense of relief and a readiness to finish strong is the overwhelming feeling I have now. I’m ready to hit it hard, and go out swinging, having known the dates of my exams weeks in advance! So if you take anything away from this, let it be that although it’s your last 2 weeks on campus, it’s like you’ve been running a marathon, it’s that extra push that sets world records, it's that extra push at the end that makes it all count.
So a little while back, we had our last preview weekend for the 2014-15 year! As always it was a blast. So much was happening during that weekend; 11:07 put on the Finale Show, which showcased the talents of some of our Alumni, & our very own SAMC theatre put on a production of The Drowsy Chaperone. It was a packed weekend, but also very impactful as far as giving an idea to some of the potential students, about what it would be like to come here to Trinity Western University.
I had the privilege of briefly interviewing a couple Preview Weekend guests after the 11:07 show, and it seemed they had had a fantastic weekend. Watch here.
To all you potential Trinity commuters, this post is for you! I traveled far and wide (not really) to find out some valuable information that will help prepare you for your commuter awesomeness here at TWU. I’m calling it Mayo’s Commuter Guide to a Successful, Awesomeness Filled, Time at Trinity. I interviewed an acquaintance of mine, and they had some valuable knowledge to share! From this, comes my guide!
"What I enjoy most about being a commuter: Alright, well as a very naturally outgoing and friendly person who enjoys meeting new people and building relationships, I have found that I have still been able to immerse myself in an environment at Trinity (while still living at home) that allows me to experience just that, community! The commuters at Trinity are phenomenal! Everyone comes from different areas and have really interesting and different lives that they lead outside of their life at school. Those who are in the collegium are enjoying what commuter life has to offer--a home away from home, if you will. Being a new student, as well as one that started halfway through the year, I was somewhat thrown into an already established year at Trinity. However, I became friends with the Collegium Assistants, when I knew no one in the space, and as time has gone by, I am now good friends with a few of the Collegium Assistants. Getting to know your CA's is an awesome way to get connected in to the rest of the commuter community. They are all-around fantastic people, they make you feel welcomed, appreciated, and included. They genuinely care about you and want to get to know you, and they make every effort to introduce you into new groups of people. The collegiums are used for studying, socializing, card and board game playing, food-cooking, napping, and relaxing."
Mayo’s Commuter Guide to a Successful, Awesomeness Filled, Time at Trinity
Get connected and use your CA’s. As they are all super cool dudes and dudettes, they would love to make your time here as awesome as possible!
Invite your non-commuter friends to chill with you in the collegiums. One thing that I unconsciously began to believe, was that anyone who was not a commuter was not allowed to go to the collegiums. I was pleasantly informed within the last few weeks (which is why this post is so relevant) that, although it is there to give the commuters a space that belongs to them, it is also a space that non-commuters can use too. The same way that other spaces on campus are not “off limits” to commuters, is the same way the collegiums are not “off limits” to residents.
Read the notice boards! This sort of ties into the previous tip, in that the events held on campus are for the entire student body! Be aware of what is going on, and get involved!
Although I know my tips were pretty much perfect and you guys are now going to be commuter experts, here is some more info on commuterdom!!
