Are You New to Digital Marketing? Here are some handy tips for newbies.
Advice for Newbies in Digital Marketing:
I remembered what I did when I started my journey in Digital Marketing way back in 2002, that time it was not even called as Digital Marketing. It was just SEO, Blogging, Affiliate, Adwords, Adsense. Here is what I did:
And it was interesting for me because this is completely a new domain, from being a Cook to Digital Marketer.
I was open and hungry to learn new things, there was no You Tube or any other video platforms like how we have Live streaming. I kept an open mind and did whatever it takes to learn. Researched about Page rank from research papers, read a lot of blogs, subscribed to a lot of RSS feeds, that was one of ways we get latest news, but today you can just follow popular blogs, Industry leaders. I have written answers to what blogs to follow. (1) Be open for learning
I choose to read blogs, which allows me to practice, so I learned but put into practice, what I learned. Even now I believe and teach my students to practice, make mistakes and learn from mistakes. I made mistakes a lot of them but learned a lot from mistakes. (2) Practice what you learned and Make mistakes
Then came podcast, boy, I love the format and medium, till date that’s my favorite thing to listen to podcast, all those who were blogging started podcasting, it saves me a ton of time, so I was both reading and listening to latest trends in Digital Marketing. This allows me again to practice new trends. (3) Pick your favorite format, learn and practice
I din’t keep a watch on what time I leave from Office, sometimes I will be there till 9,10 PM the office hours were 8–5 PM. why? I get enough time to learn, experiment with new things and no one is there to interrupt me. (4) Stay late in office, but for a reason: To learn or meet new people
I landed in a New Job because I was experimenting in latest things. I gave an Job interview, My ex boss went to a conference where they were demonstrating a new platform called Topix to my boss, they said it is new and how companies can publish their news, when they did the demo, they opened up the city where I lived and they saw me already signed up and being active in that platform, my boss was pretty impressed that I am already in that platform while they were giving the demo, I landed in that Job when he came back from the conference. (5) Be Curious and try new platforms
I learned to share what I know. In one of the important leadership training my ex boss who was a leadership coach, before the break, asked me to talk about Blogging in 2005, I was terrified, how can I talk in front of 20 CEO’s after his motivation, I tried to share what and how I blog. I was conscious and scared about my English and speaking never spoke before, but that was a life changing moment, all of the CEO came and appreciated and told me that they learned something new, then I realized the power of speaking in front of an audience. Till date, speaking helped me to get new students, build relationships and much much more.. (6) Learn to share online/if possible Offline whenever you get an opportunity
I made friends with the developers and designers. Being in Digital Marketing you need to work with others especially developers, sometimes it’s hard but I learned to be humble and genuinely became friends with them. (7) Learn to work with the team
Because I shared my passion with people whom I met, I ended up as a board member and liaison for Technology in one of Chamber of Commerce (8) Seize the opportunity
I found out about latest conference, attended a lot of events, conferences and there I got to meet like 1000’s of practitioners, got to meet them, get their insights and learn from them. Me being an Introvert, it was hard but I took that decision, If I have to be good in digital and social, I better be social in Real Life, which is what I still encourage and give a platform for our students and friends to socialize. That’s how I built relationships with Industry leaders like Matt Cutts, GaryVee, Rand from Moz, Danny Sullivan, Chris Brogan, just to name a few. (9) Attend events, workshops, conference but most importantly connect, network with people and learn from them
