1 Million Reasons To Secure Your Wordpress Blog
More than a million Australian WordPress websites have been Hacked during the Indonesian school holidays in the past 7 days.
Those are the figures coming from the Australian Online Security Institute after publishing an article on WordPress security in Australia.
I must admit, I was Hacked many, many times this past week. In-fact I got so peeved with the Hackings, I decided to chase down the young student who hacked 4 of my sites. Michael (guessing it’s not his real name) told me that during the school holidays to beat boredom, hundreds of Indonesian students took to Hacking innocent WordPress websites. Michael alone had Hacked more than 1000 sites during the school holidays.
I spoke with a couple of colleagues about the Hacking epidemic and they told me they were experiencing the same thing and suggested that I try and secure my sites myself.
So, this week I have been testing, with my new friend in Indonesia a number of WordPress security plugins. I have just finished writing a post on my findings.
So if you don’t want to be the next victim, I suggest you have a look at my findings and take some action.
WordPress is the best content management system on the internet. It’s easy to use and there isn’t anything you can’t do with it, but it has one major flaw. It’s not very secure against Bruteforce Hacker attacks and to keep your sites safer, you have to take action and specialised premium security plugins are the best way.
The WordPress plugin that gave me the best security for WordPress Clinic out of the test of 3 was WP BruteForce Not only was this the most effective plugin against hackers, it was easiest to setup.
Basically, I bought the security plugin from Jonathan Green, a well known plugin developer and internet marketer. His salespage gave me all the facts I needed.
How this particular plugin works is that it is designed to confuse a hacker and convince them to move on because it is too hard for them to find a vulnerability. The Indonesian kid Hackers are an egotistical lot. They get their kicks from hacking as many sites as they can in the shortest amount of time. So having to really spend extra time trying to hack your website is something they don’t want to do. Numbers of sites is what it is all about. The more a hacker can hack, the reward is prestige.
So with that in mind WP Bruteforce makes it a lot harder for a hacker to find an easy way into your WordPress site.
How it does that is my changing default WordPress settings. After activating WP BruteForce you will be given the opportunity to change the default login page details including the username. It also changes a few of the user details to prompt the hacker to move on.
