“The Lans are actually the best family in MDZS despite their strictness and rules.” this is so wrong. Lwj’s father couldn’t stand letting go of lwj&lxc’s mom even though she killed his teacher so he decided to just lock her up in cloud recesses and then locking himself up too. He doomed lwj & lxc to a life with no loving parent figures and the elders all did NOTHING. They just watched like they always do. And the lans aren’t loving, they are all clearly very repressed in many ways. 4000 rules.

I think they're the best family but I don't think they're the perfect family. It's just that as opposed to Jiang or Nie, the Lan were seldom, almost never violent against their children or each other. They are the type to have silent, low arguments and just drop the topic if it isn't working out (of course, LQR and LJY are exceptions, but this is just most of them).

They do love each other - unlike JGS and his children - but they do not love correctly (as you said, LWJ and LXC's parents) so

I think they're the 'better' family among the rest, but I don't think they're perfect. They're an example of a pity, and tragic, family.

I think the best kind of writing is one where the reader is like damn, I wanna create something that makes others feel like how I’m feeling right now. 

Good writing, it politely knocks on your door and introduces itself to you like a welcome guest and after it leaves you are forever nostalgic for that fateful encounter you once had but cannot replicate.

Which is good, but…

The best writing is the kind that kicks your door down, leaves you winded and steals your chickens tauntingly as it leaves. It makes you want to go to your neighbors and friends and scream about them, because how dare they make me feel things, dammit? and leaves you heaving and lurching for more, tempting you into trying out some chicken stealing for yourself.

Good writing is complete in itself. But, the best kind of writing inspires and leaves behind a ripple-effect of creation that makes it seem like it was never really gone.

The aftermath of bearing witness to the best kind of writing is an act of creation itself. The best kind of writing makes its audience a verb, a force, a creator.

That.

That is the kind of writing I wanna do.

Additional thoughts I wasn’t able to put into the previous post: (spoiler-free or kept to a minimum)

I feel like it’s an incredibly fitting ending, especially for LWJ. I agree novel LWJ wouldn’t do it, but CQL LWJ doing it wasn’t OOC for doing it either. LWJ’s personality has always shone through because he doesn’t prioritize WWX’s happiness or desires—-he prioritizes WWX’s well-being and safety—-and he is also known to be responsible, or at least, responsible to the world and the fact that he plays a part in it. He does what he can to put everyone in a better place. So it doesn’t matter WWX is sad with the decision he makes: he is confident that WWX understands why and that WWX is patient with him.

He fulfilled the promise he made with WWX in all those years ago when they released the rabbit lantern. He kept his promise.

Initially, I was a little disappointed they keep making LWJ centre around everything that evolves around WWX. But right now I think can settle with this because it seems like LWJ was only so clingy to WWX bc JGY and SS were still alive—people who he suspects want to cause WWX harm. But LWJ lets go the moment WWX’s safety is confirmed.

CQL LWJ isn’t OOC at all. I need to re read the novel maybe I think I understand now why I like CQL LWJ more. This is the difference. It’s not about which version is better. Just that I prefer the one whose life wouldn’t revolve around WWX even though he will love WWX forever and unconditionally.

I think we all actually came to the same conclusion. It’s just that the wording is different. CQL!LWJ is an extension of LWJ, and novel is also LWJ. They’re both still LWJ. He’s interesting because both novel and CQL LWJ aren’t OOC, but they made very different decisions and choices due to the circumstances. But if you think about it closely, both of them still are the same person.

I would say that LWJ loves WWX forever, but their love is beautiful because LWJ’s perception of love is very different. Unlike his father he doesn’t think about locking WWX up just because he wants to keep him safe and alive (okay he did think about it but in the end he never did it, because he realizes and grows as a character and decides to respect WWX) LWJ grieves for WWX, but chose to retain WWX’s legacy (helping people out, being where the choas is) as a method of honouring memory of WWX. Note: he honours memory of WWX, but he didn’t dwell obsessively and foolishly on WWX. Death drew the line. And he knows he should let go. But doing that also allowed LWJ to keep memory of WWX in him forever. “This was the wish of someone I loved. But it’s also something I find meaning in doing.”

LWJ doesn’t evolve around WWX. But meeting WWX - getting to know him, changed his life, changed LWJ’s life so in a way perhaps he hoped to keep do what WWX wanted to do, what WWX would have done if he could, in his stead. Again that isn’t evolving around WWX because it’s also something LWJ finds meaningful himself. It’s a way of life where LWJ feels like he’s making a difference for both others (the people he helped) as well as for himself.

That’s why they’re different people, but similar to the core. LWJ doesn’t evolve around WWX. It’s more like WWX helped LWJ find his way in life. WWX was his guide. And LWJ decided to put WWX behind him when he died, but chose to honour his legacy. It’s like building a memorial of a person, except LWJ isn’t the sort to do something that’s not meaningful and dramatic.

You can call what LWJ does is a form of love, but not the usual romantic love in BL novels. It’s because LWJ loves—loved WWX, he did all of these for him. But it’s not sentimental, pointless, or useless. It actually makes a difference for civilization. How many people did LWJ helped in 13 years? How many lives he saved? From their perspective it means a lot. That’s why LWJ was so well respected and welcomed among commoners.

WWX would have been in that position if he wasn’t so unlucky in life.

I think though that instead of WWX changing his life, he found in WWX someone who shares the same views as him, he realized that someone actually wants to do the same thing as him, who also wants to be righteous and to help the innocent and the weak. And when WWX died, he returns to doing what he had always done and, as mentioned in the novel, what he had already been known for since he was at a young age, which is being wherever the chaos is. He keeps doing it because it has always been his belief, it just so happened that WWX believes in it, too. This post discusses it in more detail. Which sort of brings me to something I disliked in CQL, which is how they implied that LWJ went wherever the chaos is for WWX. As I have already said, this is not the case at all.

Yep, WWX wanted the same things LWJ wanted. But unlike LWJ, WWX never had that self doubt and questioning, or the expectations like LWJ's sect and family had tried to convince him his whole life. He always did it like he was born to do it. For LWJ, WWX helped... Inspired....convinced???? For lack of a better word, to disregard everything and just follow his heart. When LWJ breached that layer, he found himself.

Thoughts on CQL drama

So I know that while everyone is glad CQL turned out better than expected (and some hate it), I feel like I should voice a few opinions of my own while I’m at this. I’m really glad at all the backstories given to each side character that we’ve all always wanted more development more, but as a wangxian fan for a long time now, I feel like this might either be a good or bad thing for my favourite duo and couple. I’m personally afraid this adaption is easy to ruin the original appeal of wangxian to me—turning them into the typical BL couple.

Why do people insist that two people in love must become irresponsible towards their own duties? It’s not romantic at all. In fact, if one does not have own path to follow in life, then relationships become unhealthy. Clingy. Dependency. Insecurity.

LWJ and WWX are both amazing individuals first. Without that their love/friendship simply would not be what it is. When two people who are committed to their own morals cross paths and their goals match that’s when earth shattering, life altering love blooms.

CQL ending is very apt. LWJ would of course go and first take care of his duty. WWX would similarly understand. Neither is your average person who starts becoming hurt and shocked that “after so much are you leaving me?” They are not heroes if that’s what their strength of character was limited to!

Thank you op for writing this. It’s frustrating to see lwj and wwx reduced to caricatures all in the name of “love”. That kind of shallow love doesn’t eradicate evil or inspire anyone. That kind of love is utterly myopic.
