I was showing my mum the poster for Shadow & Bone and I was like 'this is Mal, this is Alina's childhood best friend and she is very in love with him and he doesn't know but she loves him very much' and my mum went and said 'THAT'S BECAUSE SHE HASN'T MET PRINCE CASPIAN YET' and yeah, she was right
Does anyone think about how Percy Jackson maybe the only main character who is also the fandom's favorite and most popular character?
i actually think about this all the time. because like… why is percy jackson so different amongst his fandom than other main characters are amongst their fandoms? and i’m fairly confident that the isolating factor is that we read a series entirely from his own internal thoughts and then read another series of him from other people’s thoughts. like, rick invented the perfect recipe for making a character beloved:
- first we grew to love him from his own internal monologue. he’s super funny and silly and sweet. we know exactly who he is as a person, and we got to grow with him
- then he went missing, which made us all miss him immensely. distance makes the heart grow fonder. we all wanted him back so badly
- then we got reunited with him in a super satisfying way. son of neptune really opens with a bang. it’s a book packed full of percy discovering who he is again and being a total badass mf
- then we were able to get to know him from other people’s POVs, and learned that he is super different than we thought. even though we knew he was brave and powerful, we thought he was all dorky and anxious and an adorable loser (because that’s essentially what HE thinks). but then other characters describe him as wild and handsome and super intimidating. he thinks he’s just your average demigod, and everyone else thinks he’s a walking legend. a complex character at its finest.
we got to know him from an internal and external perspective. we got to know him as an anxious unpopular lovable goofball FIRST, and then learned how truly awesome and iconic he is. two wildly different versions of him, but equally lovable. that’s why everyone loves him so much. he’s our percy.

Although I do understand why so many YA protagonists are anti-having kids because of the dangers of the world they live in or just because they're young and unsure if they want them, I love Percy Jackson. He lives with danger and trauma everyday and yet still from the get-go of his relationship he's like: "Annabeth and I are having sons and daughters--our daughter will have blonde hair like Annabeth but my crazy personality and she'll be a super fierce demigod--and wow New Rome is such a safe place for a family; Annabeth and I can hold hands over a café table and watch our kids chase seagulls across the forum." And he has these thoughts at sixteen.

Hades came, he served absolute looks, he blackmailed his nephew, he grossly misjudged the situation, his daddy issues got triggered, he did a complete 180 by deciding yes actually he is going to steal his brother's shit, that backfired, and now arguably he's more confused than he was before Percy broke into his castle.
And that's Nico and Bianca's DAD.
god. hades saying, "ask me for sanctuary" after percy talks about kronos hits like a truck when you remember that he tried to do the same for maria, bianca, and nico.
Tv!Percy praying to Sally instead of the gods has the same energy as musical!Percy singing an entire verse about how awesome his mom was while the other campers are asking him about his godly parent.
They both understood the assignment.
