Several months again, when he was making his rounds on national television, I wrote Lin-Manuel Miranda a letter during his final weeks playing Alexander Hamilton. To be honest, I was bored and this was my way of venting and passing the time. I told him that his never-ending optimism and his fight for diversity and justice were inspiring. That Hamilton itself had grasped the zeitgeist, and its message was so important in our time. I promptly forgot about it. Today, my dad handed me a letter that was sent to his apartment. The Treaty Oak. It's been here since before the New World began. Someone poisoned it in 1989 in a black magic ritual in an attempt to rid himself of a love. An black check from Ross Perot, 23 PHDs, and a nursing tree later, it survived and continues to provide shade for downtown Austinites. (at Treaty Oak (Austin, Texas))
