Green Party beach cleanup questions.

I went along to the cleanup myself, it was supposed to be our first cleanup.

It was in Porirua and the Green Party were supposedly picking up people who trained in. There was no one to pick me up when I got to the train station.

I tried walking there but it was far away, got lost and also severely dehydrated.

Went home and cried XD.

Hundreds of kilograms of plastic nurdles will continue to wash up on Wellington beaches unless authorities step up, beach clean-up group says.

Found some of these ‘nurdles’ on Petone beach whilst we were doing our beach cleanup. Collected some and took them home. Also got footage of them, but it was not very good, needed a better lens (50mm/macro).

Refining our plot:

The idea of a plot and a subplot was actually brought over from our photobook whilst David was discussing how his book ‘River Road’ had a plot and then a subplot.

The Plot: the perspective of the people involved in the cleanups, the proactive people-based approach. This would come through mostly through the interviews and the beach cleanup B-roll.

The Subplot: the issue of ocean waste, the sites themselves - this would come through mostly through site B-roll.

Avenues we did not get to explore further but were discussed:

Revisiting our main three spots, Oriental, Petone, Niwa (Evans Bay) and shooting with an emphasis on the sites and the ocean - possibly shooting in the evening sun (idea brought over from earlier planning when the film was looking to be more poetic -lateness in the day = final hour metaphor/vibe).

Taking the Gopro back to the sites and getting right into the water - creates a better link with the ghost fishing dive footage.

Interviewing Rob - didn’t happen because of time constraints.

Niwa Rockwall Cleanup - Ghost Fishing.

Only one of us could go to this cleanup so there was no interview footage just B-roll.

It was a sunny day, probably one of the biggest missed opportunities in terms of filming. The divers pulled out plenty of stuff for the volunteers to separate.

Other volunteers were tallying what was found.

I talked to the organiser Rob and turns out our (Massey’s) Gopro can only go 3 metres deep underwater. Rob kindly let us use the footage from their Gopros - which could go deeper. I got his contact and grabbed that footage off of him myself. We ended up scoring a lot of good diving footage.

BEACH CLEANUP A HUGE SUCCESS:

- Cleaned up 120 litres of plastic waste.

- Approximately 60 attendees - 40 rsvp (FB/Vic) - 20 joined when passing.

- Facebook was a good tool.

As a part of ‘Semiconductor: The Technological Sublime’, was the film by UK duo Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt: ‘Worlds in the Making’ 2011.

it was 23 minutes long, across 3 screens. I took sketches as I watched.

It combined:

Dystopian landscapes with animations, fantastic vistas, and natural phenomena.

> “Science fiction with science fact”

Seismic data from beneath the volcano was translated into audio, evoking grinding rocks - also used for computer animations resembling mineral crystals.

- Soundtrack - Oren Ambarcji = emotional touch.

‘Semiconductor’ exhibition blurb excerpt:

“Celebrating the artistic capacity of scientific imaging technologies to serve up a “new brand of sublime”

“-invites us to consider what might be at stake in our easy seduction.”

Notes:

-Stakes don’t have to be set with shock value, instead tension can be built through “the sublime” -especially note the ambient background noise.

-Good example of how still/tripod shots can still be dynamic.

-Reminds me of ‘This is New Zealand’ from 1970s world expo, does that have relevance to our environment, does its (and other) portrayals of our landscape need criticism or subverting?

Initial notes on possible storyboarding avenues. A poetic format was being considered, with a person running (acting) from the camera, a metaphorically running from the problem -the problem is impending.

An idea on how to shoot the crowds and school strikes for climate rally: use zoom to capture the movement of the marchers, adds a dynamic effect (see Vox & BBC on shooting Planet Earth II.) (see also: ‘The Bomb’ on Netflix (stylistic))

Gear I was considering: Gimbal/steadycam and Gopro.
