A bucket list item checked - Pompeii!

From Rome we took the train to Napoli and then another train to Pompei.

So much bigger than I imagined. 2500 years ago and we haven’t changed much as humans.

Loved imagining vibrant life here all those years ago.

Taking the ferry to Gozo we visited Victoria’s Citadella and Ggigantija - a megalithic temple complex from the Neolithic era (c. 3600–2500 BC), The Ġgantija temples are the earliest of the Megalithic Temples of Malta and are older than the pyramids of Egypt!

Walking around Mdina at night was a highlight. It’s is a fortified city in the Western Region of Malta which was the island's capital from antiquity to the medieval period. The city has not spread beyond its ancient walls, and has a population of 250.

A natural redoubt, the area of the city has been inhabited since prehistory. A Phoenician colony known as Ann (Phoenician: 𐤀𐤍𐤍‎, ʾnn) was established around the 8th century BC, sharing its name with the island and presumably acting as its capital.

We stayed in Ataard at the Corinthia Palace and sat by the pool and had a lovely dinner under orange trees. The park across the street was like a tree zoo housing trees from all over the world. Malta is magic.

Valetta, Malta is a waterfront city so old, narrow and stunning.

Malta's history spans over 7,000 years, characterized by its strategic Mediterranean location, featuring Neolithic temple builders, Phoenician, Roman, and Arab rule, and the significant influence of the Knights of St. John. Following British colonization, it became a crucial WWII outpost, gaining independence in 1964 and joining the EU in 2004.
