You wiped away the condensation on the mirror and looked up at it. The mirror slowly fogged back up again around your eyes. Your once bright Y/E/C eyes were dull. Gripping the porcelain sink in front of you you tried to steady your hands.
“One last time.” Your voice quavered as you repeated the words over and over.
Walking out of the bathroom your eyes caught on the tactical gear laying on the motel bed, the sight fills you with dread. That gear hadn’t touched your skin since the last mission. The mission that ended your life.
You looked through the scope on your rifle, the heat signatures standing out easily in the cold climate. You had one chance to get this right, to take him out. The voice of your handler reminding you of what would happen if you failed. Shaking off your nerves you focused your attention on your mission. It was simple, a little too simple for your taste, you could make the shot in your sleep. You don’t know anything about the man, only that he’s an enemy of Hydra and that he needs to be disposed of. With your finger on the trigger, you prepare to take the shot, when a smaller heat signature runs into view, and straight into the arms of your mark. Putting your gun down, you turned to face your handler.
“I can't do it.” Looking into the eyes of the man that would decide your fate, you felt your voice try to betray you.
“You know what will happen if you don’t.” he hissed at you.
“I don’t care anymore, I just want out.” you urged, praying that your voice wouldn’t betray you.
“This is your last chance.” His warning was laced with desperation as he warned you.
“I know Soldat.” Tears were threatening to wet your cheeks as you sealed your fate.
“On your knees, face away from me.” The Soldat’s voice broke, betraying him, as he prepared your death. Leaning over he whispered into your ear, “When I reach three you’re going to run, don’t stop. You’ll be a ghost, you’ll be dead to the world.”
Turning your head towards him, you pull off his mask to press your lips to his. This would be the last time you tasted your forbidden romance. “I love you Soldat.”
“1. Don’t stop running. 2. Be safe. 3. I love you.” His voice is desperate as he counted down to the last time he would ever see you.
You didn’t know how they found you. For the past two years, you had been living on the run. You had been staying in cheap motels, paying in cash, using fake names, and minimal human contact. To anyone who knew you existed you were dead, you were a ghost.
The burner phone on the night table filled the air with sharp trills, pulling your mind back to the task at hand.
“Hello?” Your voice was toneless as you tried to keep the fear from breaking through.
“Asset 23, we’re so glad you’ve decided to come back to the land of the living. How as death?”
“Well, let’s just say it didn’t quite agree with me.”
‘Funny as always. Just make sure your wit doesn’t interfere with your assignment and we won’t have any problems.”
“What’s my assignment?”
“Check your freezer, I expect you’ll know what to do.”
The line went silent and you were left in the motel room with a ticking bomb in your freezer. Walking to the freezer you pulled it open and saw an envelope. Hands shaking you ripped it open and poured the contents on the table in front of you. Staggering back away from the table you recognized the photo of your mark.
Steve Rogers was your last assignment.

The Emerald Ring
Warnings: angst
Word count: 2010
Summary: none cause I suck at summaries
Pairings: Loki x Reader, Steve Rogers, Thor, Mentions of the Avengers
Five years ago your world came crashing down. Thanos did just what he said he would, he wiped out half of the universe.
You stared at your reflection as you washed your face. The weight of the chain around your neck comforting your nerves. You were finally going to see them. The people you left behind when the world came crashing down around you. Droplets ran down your face bringing you back to reality. Drying off your face, and applying finishing touches, you grabbed your bag and left your apartment. Holding the emerald ring that once promised so much close to your chest. The streets of New York, once bustling with life, were just short of abandoned. Store windows were boarded up or broken. The ghosts of the people who lived there making the air heavy.
Hela had attacked and destroyed Asgard and left your people without a home. Heimdall had told you to go to a place called Midgard once Hela arrived, in order to secure a place where the Asgardians could seek refuge. That was how you found yourself in Wakanda fighting in a battle you wouldn’t win. When the war for the Universe broke out on Midgard you volunteered to help fight off the Titan. But the troops were too many and their drive too great, and Thanos won. The glimmer of hope that the war had been won when Thor drove his axe into the shoulder of the great titan, was ripped away when the sound of a snap echoed through the forest.
NOW
The Avengers thought they found a way to bring everyone back, something about a quantum realm. That's why you were going to see the people who reminded you of when the world ended.
You searched the battlefield for a man in green armor with hair as dark as the depths of the ocean. You just wanted to find something, a clue that he was here, a clue that he was alive, just something.
NOW
“Y/N Y/L/N” you said when you reached the door of the compound. Everywhere you looked reminded you of that day. The day you returned with the broken heroes to a world that couldn’t be saved.
You walked into the main room and were greeted by solemn faces. But underneath the masks that they had worn so long, you sensed a glimmer of hope drowning in the pain.
Steve explained the plan. Go in, grab the stones and don’t be seen. You’d be running the base back in the present time--monitoring vitals and such.
It was supposed to be a simple mission, but the team came back to one less person. Natasha Romanoff had sacrificed herself to save the world. She more than wiped the red from her ledger.
Someone was screaming somewhere, it was almost inhuman. You looked around the faces of the people you had just fought with, all of them looking how you felt. A hand landed on your shoulder bringing you back to your body. It was you, you were the one screaming. The ring on your finger felt heavy, it felt like it was dragging you to your death. Once a symbol of love, it now only symbolized pain.
-At the Avengers Compound-
Loki is dead. The words that Thor had told you echoed in your head. They pounded against your skull begging to be free, to escape.
“Steve? I-I need to, um, I really need to get out of here. Immediately. I don’t know how much longer I can keep myself contained.”
Your powers were fighting to escape, consuming the grief that was coming off of you in waves. It was growing stronger by each second, threatening to overflow.
You followed him in a trance, all of your attention on keeping the powers inside of you under control.
“You can use this room. It was, um, we built it… it was Wanda’s when she was training.”
You touched his arm, and immediately you felt his grief surge through your veins. “Steve, thank you. We’ll fix this, I promise.”
With that, you walked into the room and secured the door. Sobs began to rack your body as you used the wall for support, your feet gave out as you slid down to the floor. The powers you had been working so hard to contain poured out of you. They came in waves destroying everything around you. The targets and dummies that had been left lying around caught flame and turned to ash. The flames leaving behind black marks everywhere they touched.
NOW
It was time. Bruce was going to reverse the snap, and everyone would come back. But the ring brushing against your chest reminded you that not everyone would be coming back. A hundred memories flashed before your eyes. Loki and you dancing under the stars, the light illuminating his eyes as he brushed his lips across your neck. Chasing each other down the hallways of the palace as the sounds of laughter filled the silent rooms. You were torn from your memories as the floor fell out from under you, plunging you into darkness.
You felt the familiar warmth of your flames as they covered your body and burned the debris around you. You emerged from the fallen compound coughing up blood and dust. When your eyes cleared you saw a blurry silhouette of a man. There was just one thing though. That silhouette belonged to a man who wasn’t in the land of the living. It was the last thing you saw before the edges of your vision turned staticky and then faded to black. Your limbs became parazlyed as you fell to the ground.
A little girl and boy were running down a hallway in Asgard chasing each other and laughing. Your Y/H/C hair flowing behind you as the raven-haired boy chased you. The scene in front of you changed and you were brought into a different memory. It was at one of the balls in Asgard, probably celebrating another one of Thor’s achievements. You knew that there was something special about this time, but you couldn’t quite put your finger on it. You and Loki were sitting on the balcony railing together, probably planning your next scheme. Time seemed to stop, as he leaned in and gently brushed your lips with his thumb. That's when it hit you, this was the first time you kissed. Your hand went up into his head and tangled your fingers in his hair, as he leaned in and kissed you. Once your lips meet you’re swept away to a different place again. This time you know exactly where it is. It was where Loki proposed to you. You were in the library with your arms draped around his shoulders as he read. Your perfume hung in the air mixing with the smell of books, and his scent. He leaned his head back against your chest and closed his eyes for a moment before he pulled you into his lap. His breath tickled your neck when he laid his head on your shoulder.
“Y/N/N” he murmured.
“Hmm”
“Get up love”
“But you’re warm…”
“I need to do something.”
“Then do it while you’re sitting down.”
“Only if you remember that I tried to get up.”
“Of course.”
Loki pulled your body so that you were facing him, and gently kissed you. “Y/N, I’ve known since the moment I met you that there would never be someone better than you to help me pull off my tricks. But as the years went by I started to realize that I would never meet anyone as smart, kind, and as beautiful as you. I realized that I would never look into anyone else’s eyes and see a home as I do yours. I want to watch the sunset with you in my arms and do everything in between. Y/N, you are my best friend, my partner in crime, and the only person I ever want to be with. Y/N Y/L/N will you marry me?”
“No.”
“Excuse me?” He stiffened, and he let his arms fall from around your body.
“I’m kidding! Of course, I’ll marry you. You’ve been my best friend my entire life. I’ve loved you since we were kids running down the hallways together. And I knew you were the only person I would ever love since our first kiss that night. There is no one that I would rather be with than you.”
He slipped a simple gold band with a large emerald on your hand and moved you so you were straddling him as he kissed you.
“Y/N. Y/N!”
You were pulled back to consciousness with a sound that should have been impossible to hear. You opened your eyes and were blinded by the fluorescent lighting. Slamming your eyes shut, you noticed a weight on your arm. You opened them again, slowly, allowing them to adjust to the lighting. There he was. Your fiancé, your very dead fiancé, sleeping with his arm resting on yours.
Pressure started to build on your chest, making it hard to breathe, as your heart started beating wildly. It felt like it was trying to break out of your ribs. Your powers started to threaten to release themselves as your body temperature rose. The sheets started to smoke as you counted to ten in order to gain control of your powers.
That's when Loki’s eyes fluttered open as he pulled his arm off you in a hurry. He put his arm in his lap as fast as he could, but not without you noticing the faint burn on it.
“Love…” he said, his voice almost at a whisper. He grabbed your hand and placed it over his heart. “Focus on my heartbeat, ok? It’s going to be alright, just try and match mine with yours.”
The flames threatening to come out cooled down at the familiar feel of Loki’s hands. Slowly, your heart slowed down and matched his.
He released your hand and bent down to capture your lips in a kiss. Five years of missed contact were made up as you both broke away for air.
“You, You’re dead. You have to be dead. We mourned you, I cried for you, I still cry for you.”
“I promise you, love, I am very much alive.”
“No, you died 5 years ago. Thor saw you, you sacrificed yourself in an attempt to save the universe. You’re not real.”
“Love, please, I had to make Thanos think I died. I had to keep him away from you. I couldn’t let him hurt you.”
“Why didn’t you come back sooner? The Avengers found Thanos and killed him five years ago, you could’ve came back. You let your people, your family, me, you let us mourn you for five years. You could have sent a sign, a message, anything that would let me know you were alive.”
“I know and I’m sorry…”
“Sorry won’t fix this. Sorry, would fix you breaking a dish, or losing a necklace. Sorry doesn’t fix faking your death and letting your fiancé cry for you for five years. Sorry, can’t fix this Loki. I need you to leave.”
“I can come back later--”
“No, I don’t think you understand. I. Don’t. Want. To. See. You.” You managed to get out through choked sobs.
“Please, please just give me a second chance.”
“You had a chance. You had a chance to stop before you hurt me and you didn’t. Do you think you deserve a second one?”
Tears streamed down his face as he got to the door, his hand resting on the handle.
“I love you, and I will always love you. If you ever give me a chance, I promise you I will not mess it up. I will always wait for you.”
He closed the door and with that you let your sobs rack your body as tears drenched your face.
