Do you have any advice on writing a GOOD character analysis from an episode of a show?
I've been trying several times to write a character analysis about Stan Marsh from an episode of South Park titled, "Help! My teenager hates me!" and I want to expand on it properly as a whole cohesively other than just talking about symbolism or visuals.
Okay, if you REALLY want to get as good at yapping about characters as I am then this is what you need to do:
Learn more about psychology: I used to study psychology and child development in college and still love reading books about psychology to this day so that was DEF something that helped me analyze and write characters better. I feel like good characters are written based on people the writers of the show knew in real life, so learning as much about psychology as possible is helpful for if you want to truly master and understand the motivations behind people's behaviors in general. Once you truly master overanalyzing the real people around you in your day to day life, then analyzing the motivations behind a fictional character is pretty much the same thing.
Learn more about screenwriting: This was the second thing I did after I studied psychology and child development, I took a screenwriting class and not only did it help me learn how to write a show/film myself, it helped me understand how to analyze characters better. If you wanted to do a character analysis from more of a writing standpoint by looking at things like hero's journey, character development, and character archetypes then it's important to understand the basis of how writers construct stories through their characters.
Rewatch the episodes/scenes you want to analyze with that character over and over again: I think this one is SUPER important and this is what I always do and usually when I come up with an idea for a rant or think of something new to say about the character it's because I was re-watching the same scenes I have seen a million times but saw it in a new way this time. If you're trying to do an analysis take the time to really thoroughly absorb what scenes you are analyzing before writing anything yet. In your example you want to analyze Stan in "Help my Teenager Hates Me", so what I would do is watch the scenes with Stan in that episode over and over until you pick up on new things other people haven't said already or pointed out. If you're really serious about becoming a full-time South Park character analyzer I think it's also important to get good at memorizing which episodes are in which season and when they came out (if you haven't already) because this will really help you connect the dots and compare an episode you are analyzing to a past or future episode to look at the ways the characters developed and evolved throughout the show. Hope this helps. Also if you wanted to learn better techniques to just improve as a writer in general to overcome writer's block and write your analyses better I also have my writing course "Write Like a Beast" that I can send over anyone's way if interested!

This is to add onto my rant I just did about how Kyle launched an entire ass smear campaign against Cartman to sabotage his aids benefit — also the fact that Kyle RLLY started laughing hard right after Cartman said Jimmy Buffet came to his benefit instead of Elton John tells me that Kyle specifically went out of his way to tell Elton John not to come or did something that prevented Elton John from coming which was just malicious AF considering how much Cartman was looking forward to getting to see one of his fav rock idols play to cheer him up after finding out he’s literally gonna die 😩
Cartman is actually generous AF
