First post! - Sony may have discontinued the PSP, but it will always be remembered!
So yeah, my name is Luke, you may know me as Lukeme9X or Shadow Blaze from a neighbouring blog, and this my tech blog, I started it to run alongside my A-Level computer science course and will be updating it whenever I find out something that is interesting enough to share with you awesome people!
Well, the PSP that we all knew and loved has officially been discontinued (well it discontinued on the 3rd of June 2014, so I am a bit late posting this...) but it will still continue to be played, no one will ever forget it, and it will always have a place in my heart.
Now comes the interesting part, why was such a loved console discontinued? Its not like the NES being discontinued for the more advanced SNES, as the SNES was just an upgrade to NES, technology was improve fast back then, so moving consumers to a new platform was not just for the benefit of Nintendo, but for the benefit of the consumers as the new technology opend many more possibilities. So why why why was the PSP stopped? It still had a large market, it was still, alongside the DS, a favorable console for children and adults alike who wanted a portable gaming device, it still had decent specs... Well the reason it was discontinued was so more people would buy the relatively unpopular PS Vita. The PS Vita was doing terribly compared to the 3DS, so Sony decided the best way to get more people to buy Vita was to kill off the still prominent PSP.
This was a big mistake for Sony, as it's sales for the Vita will probably remain the same, people will still buy the remaining PSPs and when they're gone people will buy something from the DS range instead. This mean that Sony will be forced to lower the price of the Vita to encourage more buyers.
This isn't the first time a company has done something like this... Who knows about Arkham Night? Well that is just one of many examples of a Next Gen only game. Why is it Next Gen only? Hardware limitations, specs, next gen only dependencies, the API...? None of the above, what I am suggesting is that Sony and Microsoft want developers to force the consumers into having to buy PS4s and XBox Ones so they can make more money.
But look at these games, they look amazing, they wouldn't even work on an old PS3 or Xbox 360! Well, look at Valve, but I mean look closely you'll notice that in the SDK there are handles for optimisation such as disabling world details marked as "non xbox" for the original XBox to improve performance or not showing certain shader effects based on what DirectX level you are running or what your graphics preferences are. HL2 can run on VSynced 60fps on all the platforms it was released for; XBox, X360, PS2, PS3, (PC, Mac, Linux).
It seems that the only companies with Logic are Nintendo the ones who maximise compatibility across as many platforms as possible to reach as many audiences instead of trying to make more money.
