The latch on the door clicks open. Then the locks, and the bolt.

Buck stops fiddling with the metal collar and the chain. Only one eye is working now, the other swelled shut from bruising. At least the blood's not flowing from his nose anymore.

Irene opens the door and, with some difficulty, tosses another man down the few steps. It's hard to see well in the sudden spill of light, locked as he had been all day or night in complete darkness, though he notices the new guy has dark hair and he's big. And there's red on his shirt.

Blood.

"Here's someone to keep you company, darling," she says breathlessly, her raspy voice harsh in the silence.

Then the door slams shut, leaving Buck in darkness again.

He heads as far as he can towards the man and, to his relief, hears breathing.

"Hey, hey, are you awake?" Buck whispers.

"I'm... Ev'n?" The voice in the dark mumbles. Confused. Frightened.

Buck freezes. This is his worst nightmare. "Tommy?"
