Here is a version of the animation that I exported to check it was running smoothly before I did the eyeshine and spooky cattle and other lighting effects. I know this is essentially potato quality after export to GIF but if you look very closely you might be able to see that the hat, face, and neck/shoulders are separately animated to suggest breathing and a very slight raising/dipping of the head.

Dating events in Rawhide, one data point: Incident of the New Start - dude who wants to be trail boss (replacing Favor) says he'll be 51 in March and was 40 when the war started. The Civil War started in April 1861. Cattle drives began in early spring. Ergo, it's maybe late Feb in 1872 in that episode.

Wait no they said it's the end of the season. So it's late 1871?

That sounds pretty close since it's Canon that rowdy was 16 when the war was over 1865 and hes 22 in the show meaning yes it would be 1872 , shocked if the writers actually thought this far ahead or if it was just a coincidence 😭
