This assignment was to design an album cover for the record of a band of our choice. The band I chose was Studio Killers!

This was a lot of fun to do, not just because iI got to use a bunch of brushes, but also because the colors and overall aesthetic that the band has was really fun to translate into an album form.

emulation painting project!

in this I was trying to emulate the style of Frederick Childe Hassam, an impressionist painter I greatly admire. He works almost exclusively with landscapes, especially those by the ocean. 

It was very challenging for me, not color wise, but brush stroke wise, to try and get it looking right. Overall though, I put a lot of effort into making this piece look good.

There is still a lot I have to work on and fine-tune, but I like how the colors are turning out & the impressionist brushes are really fun to work with.

I loved all of the colors on this, even though trying to blend them together gave me a bit of trouble. I especially like how the face and hair turned out. 

Plus, I had to do this using only a chunky charcoal brush, which was certainly interesting.

This is my self portrait portrait, where I drew myself drawing myself and the mood I had during the entire process!

I do really liked how this turned out, since, instead of mostly texture brushes, I used primarily the soft round and hard round brushes for everything except the jacket, pants, hair, and skin.

Again, this took me a long time but I’m happy with the final result! It looks very stylish.

About five hours into this the pointer finger on my left hand started cramping up from pressing command+s so often.

I think the real challenge I had with this, aside from the actual painting, was all the color picking I had to do. Since my original photo was a little grainy, there were a lot of spots where the colors varied. I do like how it looks painted, though.

I feel like I could’ve done better, but at the same time, I kinda like where it’s at.

This was quite the challenge! I painted this from a photo reference. I blocked out all of the colors, and then used the color picker to find all the blends in between. 

I’d say the hardest part was trying to make the shadows look softer and not as harsh, since the original photo was a clay ball.

I’m kinda neutral on how this turned out. At first I wasn’t satisfied with how it turned out, but it looks okay now since I’m looking at it with fresh eyes.

It was a challenge trying to figure out how I was supposed to get the texture of it across, but i think I did alright.

I used the polygon lasso tool to map out the boldest shadows in the picture, and then did the same thing to create the highlights.

For my still life assignment, I chose a stuffed animal unicorn I had hanging around my dorm room.

I feel like I did okay on this piece, but it was difficult trying to figure out how to get the certain textures to look right. I used the most basic hard/soft brushes for both the main body and the shadow/details on it.

I’m not particularly proud of it, but it came out looking okay.

I made a gif of my face drawing process!!

It came out really well, and this was a good refresher for me since the last time I made a gif was about 2 years ago.

Plus, now I know how to put frames together in photoshop! maybe I can use this to upload some simple animations in the future.

Another brush control exercise! I actually liked this one a lot, I guess because hands are somehow harder to draw than human faces, and I think I’m getting more and more used to doing self-portraits. 

I just used a simple hard brush to do this, and I mapped out the face and head shape before moving on to the black outline.

Overall, a pretty nice exercise and a good excuse for me to stare at my self for a good half an hour.

Mapping out the hand wasn’t too bad, but it got tougher when I had to start on the details. Several times I had to adjust the finger size because they looked too stubby for the size of the palm. 

Overall, it was a good exercise and a great way for me to get used to sketching in photoshop! I’m proud with how this turned out.

Another digital artist I really admire is Louie Zong! His art has such a nice look to it.

Aside from the soft, watercolor style he has, his art is just really charming and appealing.

He occasionally makes music too, often with little animations to go with them.

Louie also works as a storyboard artist on Cartoon Network’s We Bare Bears.

The first digital artist I’m gonna write about is Lauren, aka the great iguanamouth !

First of all, I love the style that their digital art has, especially with the way they do shading and coloring. I’ve admired their style for a while now :> One project they recently wrapped up was them drawing all of the original pokemon, and pic 1 is my personal favorite.

A lot of their work is prompt-based conceptual stuff, when they aren’t doing commissions. The second pic was based on the term “hedgehogs”

Not only do they make amazing works of art, but they do a lot of funny stuff too, and trust me, the reverse-centaur is just the tip of the iceberg.
