Chasing Grindylows by firetoflame - this fic isn't available to read anywhere at the moment (or reread for yet another time) but if you every get the chance, it's such a good mix of canon-adjacent action and slice of life/romance between Remadora. Starts around Goblet of Fire-ish and goes a few years past Deathly Hallows.

Pluto by bikelock28 - this is a series of one-shots with some collections. I love the characterization of Remus and Tonks in this story, I feel like it's the closest to realistic canon.

In All Our Lives by HecateA - these one-shots are lovely, imaginative AUs. My favorites are the Tailor Medieval, Flower Shop, and Soul Mark.

The Flying Colours trilogy by Taura Norma - absolutely amazing series. It follows canon except for a divergence at the end. :)

Oh, the Places I'll Take You by jadeddiva - shoutout to this steamy one-shot from ye olden days, before Deathly Hallows had come out.

The Lighthouse by TedwardRemus - by now it should be clear I'm a sucker for an AU, and this one is so atmospheric.

Moonlit Marriage by CelesteMagnolia - 10/10. So much yearning, fake relationship, marriage of convenience, need I say more? This AU does start off light but get much darker than I initially expected, so a heads up. (Also, really any fics by CelesteMagnolia come with a recommendation from me.)

The notion would be laughable if Lily hadn’t consumed so much wine. As it were, the roommates were two-thirds of their way through a second bottle of Shiraz—a gift from Marlene’s ex—and Lily was currently feeling every drop. If anyone else had suggested it, wine-drunk or not, Lily would have scoffed at the idea. But Marlene was an actress too, or at least, attempting to be one, just as Lily was, so she knew the suggestion came from a genuine, albeit strange, place, rather than mocking commentary that she could have expected (and would have received) from her sister and ex-best friend.

It was a regular Friday-night tradition of theirs to scour Tinder and consult each other about which way to swipe. Some nights, they got more liberal with their right swipes as the wine bottle emptied, and other nights were the opposite. Tonight fell in the former category.

“I don’t know, Mar,” Lily said, topping off their glasses with the last of the bottle. “What kind of guy would have this in his profile? The only thing in his profile, mind, besides an apparently made-up career at… Sleekeazy, whatever the fuck that is supposed to be.”

“He is fit, though,” Marlene countered, and Lily couldn’t disagree.

Despite the entirety of “James, 29”’s profile being blank, the handful of photographs uploaded painted a rather appealing picture—a couple of which included a very shirtless man on a football field, and she was certainly a good enough actress to fake her way through an interest in football for abs like that.

“Besides,” Marlene continued, now thumbing through an app on her own phone, “what’s the worst that can happen?”

“Besides being murdered, you mean?”

Marlene waved the comment away, as if to say well, obviously, but what else? “Swipe right, Evans. Live a little.”

like many people have said this better than me but no it IS odd that we've come to think of potatoes as so quintessentially european that their presence in historical fantasy where they're anachronistic doesn't jar. and yes people are trying to have the trappings of post-colonial europe without engaging w the icky colonialism part and yes people are neglecting to imagine what a european cuisine without potatoes would be like.

perhaps a good way to sum up the issue here is:

if you put potatoes in your medieval european style fantasy world people will by and large not find it jarring and accept it as a normal fantasy trope

if you put, say, black people in your medieval european style fantasy world a whole demographic of people will get very angry and accuse you of breaking their immersion

this is in spite of the fact that black people were a lot more common in medieval europe than potatoes.
