it was one of those lazy afternoons, the kind where the air felt warm and heavy with sunlight. zenitsu was lying flat on the engawa, one arm tossed over his eyes, humming a song off-key. you were sitting right beside him, legs dangling off the edge, quietly watching a couple of birds pecking at the dirt path.
he groaned suddenly. “ugh, i’m so bored. why’s the day so long?”
“you could train,” you teased, poking his shoulder.
he cracked one eye open and gave a dramatic sigh. “train? i’d rather die beautifully in the sun than sweat right now.”
you laughed quietly, leaning back on your hands. “you’re unbelievable.”
he sat up instantly, eyes wide and a little pouty. “hey! i was giving you a compliment setup and you—”
you didn’t let him finish. before he could get another word out, you leaned in quick and pressed a kiss against his mouth.
it was soft, brief, but so fast that it completely froze him in place.
zenitsu blinked. once. twice.
then his whole face turned red—like bright red.
“DID YOU JUST—?!” he practically shrieked, hands flying to his mouth. “WHAT—YOU—THAT WAS—”
you grinned. “yeah. what about it?”
“‘what about it?!’ that was my first kiss of the day!” he said like it was some massive event. “you can’t just ambush me like that, i wasn’t ready! my heart! my poor heart—it’s doing backflips!”
you laughed so hard you nearly fell over. “you’ll live.”
he clutched his chest dramatically. “no, i won’t! i’ve seen the light!”
but when you leaned closer again, just barely brushing his shoulder, he froze and went silent except for the quiet, giddy smile tugging at his lips.

the two of you were sitting by the small fire pit outside the house, roasting a few sweet potatoes tanjiro had brought back. the air smelled faintly of smoke and sugar, and his expression was as soft as the flicker of the flames.
“these are almost ready,” he said, turning the stick carefully. “you like the edges a little crispy, right?”
you nodded. “yeah. how’d you remember?”
he smiled faintly. “i remember everything about people i care about.”
you felt your chest warm a little at that. tanjiro always said things like that—earnest, simple, and with so much sincerity it was almost unfair.
he handed you one of the sweet potatoes, watching you blow on it before taking a bite. “good?” he asked.
you nodded again, cheeks puffed slightly as you chewed. “perfect.”
he chuckled softly, his eyes closing briefly like he was soaking in the moment. it was quiet, peaceful. you could hear the faint chirping of crickets, the rustle of wind.
then something in you just… acted.
you turned your head, leaned in fast, and kissed him on the mouth.
it was quick, spontaneous, and it caught him completely off guard.
his eyes went wide. “wha—?”
you pulled back, trying not to laugh. “what?”
“you—you just—” he stammered, blinking rapidly, face flushing bright pink. “that was—i mean—it was nice, i’m not saying it wasn’t! it was just—sudden!”
you tilted your head, feigning innocence. “didn’t seem like you hated it.”
“hate it? no!” he said quickly, shaking his head so fast his hair ruffled. “i just—usually you warn people before doing something like that!”
you smiled. “it was a sneak attack.”
he blinked again, then his lips curved up into that warm, boyish grin of his. “then… i’ll have to be ready next time.”
you leaned in a little closer, voice teasing. “next time?”
his face went even redder. “i mean—if there is one!”
“there will be,” you said.
and tanjiro, still flustered and smiling shyly, nodded like he couldn’t wait.

you and sanemi were sitting on a rooftop, watching the sunset bleed across the sky. the tiles were warm under your legs, and sanemi had that familiar scowl on his face, though it was softer than usual, more relaxed.
“you always look pissed off,” you teased, leaning back on your hands.
“that’s just my face,” he grumbled, not looking at you.
he glanced at you. “what’s that supposed to mean?”
“means you’re secretly soft,” you said with a grin.
he snorted. “yeah, right.”
you shrugged. “just sayin’. you didn’t yell at that kid earlier when he tripped. that was kinda soft.”
“he was like five,” sanemi muttered, running a hand through his messy hair. “you don’t yell at five-year-olds.”
he rolled his eyes but there was the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth.
the moment stretched out quiet and easy—the kind of silence that didn’t need filling. then, right when he turned slightly to look at you, you leaned in and kissed him.
fast. clean. right on the mouth.
sanemi froze, eyes going wide.
“what the—did you just—” he started, but his words cut short when you leaned back with a small grin.
“yeah,” you said simply. “problem?”
his jaw worked for a second, like he was trying to come up with something to say but couldn’t.
“you—you can’t just do that without warning,” he muttered, looking away quickly, ears burning red.
“because—!” he started, then stopped. “because it’s distracting.”
he shot you a sharp glare. “don’t start.”
you smirked. “you’re blushing.”
you reached over and tapped his cheek lightly. “then what’s this?”
he caught your wrist before you could pull away, his grip firm but not rough. “you keep teasing like that, and i’m not gonna let you get away with another sneak attack.”
you tilted your head, smiling. “guess i’ll have to take my chances.”
his smirk returned then, low and sharp. “bold.”
he didn’t answer but the small laugh that slipped out of him said everything.

the day had been loud, bright, full of laughter—rengoku’s kind of day. the two of you ended up sitting on a wooden bench under a tree, the evening light painting everything gold. he was talking, animated as always, about something he’d seen on patrol.
“—and then, the boar came charging right at me!” he said, eyes gleaming with excitement.
you laughed. “and you just stood there?”
“of course!” he said, chest puffed out. “one must stand firm even when faced with danger!”
“perhaps!” he admitted proudly. “but it was a magnificent beast!”
you shook your head, grinning as he laughed heartily beside you. it was so easy to feel warm around him—like the world itself softened a bit when he smiled.
and maybe it was that warmth, or the glow of sunset on his skin, or just the fact that you couldn’t resist anymore—but you suddenly leaned over and kissed him.
it was quick, but it landed squarely on his lips, and the second it happened, his entire body went still.
“HAHA!” rengoku’s voice erupted into laughter so full it startled a few birds from the branches above.
“what a bold move.” he said, beaming at you. “a sneak attack of affection!”
“you’re… not mad?” you asked, half-laughing yourself.
“mad? not at all!” he said, eyes glowing like fire. “i admire your courage!”
you laughed softly, shaking your head. “you’re impossible.”
he leaned in slightly, that familiar confident grin on his face. “perhaps! but i do hope you know—such surprises are most welcome!”
“indeed!” he said, voice dipping low but still full of warmth. “though next time, i shall be prepared and return the favor.”
you raised an eyebrow. “so, you’re planning a counterattack now?”
“of course!” he said proudly. “consider this… war!”
you laughed, and he joined in, the two of you sitting there in the fading light, grins wide and hearts lighter than they’d been all day.
