I hadn’t written anything creatively, like ever, like not even a tweet, until November. Fascinating to me because, yes, I’m kind of a dumdum sometimes when it comes to my favorite stupid firefighter show, but I really 100% thought they were going with Eddie Knows. Like, this whole season. He’s giving Buck the giantest heart eyes, he’s fervently denying any kind of relationship with Alex, he’s paying thousands of dollars to avoid one charity date with a woman, he’s trying to fight homophobic New Mexicans. He’s done so much therapy but he’s never ventured close enough to this aspect of himself to introspect about it even a little? (Okay, I believe that one). Maybe he thinks Buck’s not ready, maybe he’s not ready himself yet, I don’t know. But it’s so jarring to read Ryan’s interview (and I agree he understands Eddie so well!) and to read takes from other very smart fans saying Eddie is clearly oblivious. What were all those choices for, then? Is it Ryliver reverse character bleed? Bad writing? Bait?

Obviously I’m going to watch the whole season again immediately.

buck literally started this season On The Outside watching heneddie bestiepartnerism and feeling like he was losing something and ravi had to remind him that no, actually they’ve been working together for years, they all have in fact. it’s normal for them to get along and work well together. it’s something that was so obvious and SHOULD be so obvious to buck but for some reason it isn’t. it feels wrong to him.

we end the season with buck On The Outside of chrisandeddie twice. and then pepa says something that reminds him of eddie placing him on the outside of chrisandeddie despite everything that has happened since (ie the texas facetimes, bringing chris home to buck after they fought, weekly dinners with chrisandeddie, calling buck first when chris was missing, bringing chris to buck’s when buck was in withdrawal)

but to buck, it reminds him that he is On The Outside Looking In. and honestly, yeah. fair enough to buck! we haven’t seen him have an active role with chris in so long! he hasn’t had the opportunity to sit down w chris and TRY to have an active role since literally just before chris left for texas. buck isn’t dumb, he doesn’t feel these things out of nothing. we see them as this family unit, but i don’t think it’s clearly defined to either buck OR eddie despite eddie knowing he wants buck There. i think that’s WHY buck struggled with seeing heneddie at the start of the season, because obviously their relationship is Something Else. but it has never been clearly defined. they are special to each other but they don’t know what it means!

the tension and uncertainty is there for a reason. for drama, yes, but also because if it is understood fully by buck and eddie, then they have to address It and things will CHANGE. and they aren’t there yet (the characters and the story itself).

all of this is to say, i think through fostering theo, through eddie showing up to support buck, the family unit aka the BUDDIE of it all will become undeniable.

Theo does not appear in this fic! I’m pro-Theo at this point, but the important thing here is that Eddie is pro-Theo. His face every time he looks at Buck&Theo, I can’t.

Buck’s brain must short circuit a little bit then. There’s no other explanation. It’s a moment of insanity. It’s Eddie, saying the exact words Buck needs to hear at exactly the right time. Like he always does. It’s a bolt of lightning to the chest, a shock to the system.

He surges forward and kisses Eddie. Before he can think better of it, not thinking at all. He doesn’t have the words to express everything he’s feeling at that moment, it’s all he can do.

9-1-1 is the found family show. and i would argue that the theo storyline fits in perfectly with that theme precisely because buck isn’t theo’s family and they made that abundantly clear right on our screens. buck knows he isn’t family and his dialogue in the hospital confirmed that fact, and the show drove the point home by showing theo leaving to stay with a family until next of kin is determined.

theo’s parents died. he lost his family. he will likely find family with buck, possibly made easier legally because of dna (which we can’t determine how easy that will be yet because we haven’t seen how they will get from point a to point b), but interpersonally… he isn’t automatically family for theo because of dna and i am confidently placing my bets that 9-1-1 will make sure to show that. their family will have to be built brick by agonizing and joyous brick, and it will be hard (because when is anything ever easy in this show), and those bricks will consist of a man who was never supposed to be theo’s family and every single member of the family he has found and built for himself over the years.

i truly believe there is no reality where buck would assume to be a better fit for theo than his parents if they were still alive. if we know buck at all, he’s going to struggle and doubt himself but ultimately work hard to earn theo’s trust and to be a worthy caretaker for theo, he will make sure to keep theo’s parents memories alive, and he will make sure theo, who has suffered an incredible loss, will find family in buck and chris and eddie and the 118 in time.

it's so funny to me how badly biology 101 "nature vs nurture" is kicking some people's asses rn. no I don't think canonizing buck's adhd since childhood erases his trauma responses to his parents' neglect. they go hand in hand. his parents could barely look at him because of him being a reminder of daniel but his adhd made him a problem to ignore because it made him loud and rambunctious and hyperactive and a risk-taker. all those things we've already seen. and then when the bicycle incident happened he realized he could use that to his advantage cause if he was just a little less careful they would keep looking at him even if they were looking through him. it's a cycle that fed into itself. the difference between buck and theo is in the nurture. buck's parents told him and maddie that they "never made it easy" on them, fully blaming them for everything. connor and kameron were recognizing that theo isn't being difficult on purpose and trying to find a diagnosis and a way to help him, even if they weren't going about it the best way.
