“What is Undetectable?” is going on today, Saturday, May 30 from 12-6PM, as part of the New Museum’s IDEAS CITY.  We are Booth 28 (on Stanton Street between Bowery and Christie Street)

Led by Avram Finkelstein and the Undetectable Flash Collective, we will raise the question “What Is Undetectable?”

The theme of this year’s IDEAS CITY Festival is The Invisible City.  With this in mind, and deploying the logic of the festival environment, Visual AIDS will distribute balloons asking participants “What is Undetectable?” to engage the public in dialogue about HIV and serostatus.

In order to foster a community conversation about HIV and AIDS in dialogue with the Library’s major archives on the history of the AIDS crisis, The New York Public Library is hosting a project to create site-specific installations in four library branches—across the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island—that explore the ways that HIV and AIDS are currently affecting these local New York City communities.

  Fifteen artists, writers, and advocates answered the call to participate in a series of Flash Collective workshops with Avram Finkelstein. Over the course of two months they met to discuss the current challenges faced by people living with HIV, as well as the challenges in HIV prevention.

Based on these conversations, they designed a poster installation for four library branches, an outreach post card, and a blog to continue their conversation under the name of the Undetectable Collective.

    Their work will be on view this October through December at the Hunt’s Point, Jefferson Market, St. George, and Washington Heights branches.  See each branch’s homepage for location and hours. Please come see the exhibition and take a postcard.

Here is an animated.gif from early on in the Undetectable Collective’s process, when we were asked to create something “to inspire each other”.  This graphic was initially created to instigate dialogue around the myriad of implications regarding rampant ‘criminalization’ of HIV—and with continued public focus [almost exclusively] on transmission, how might ‘criminal’ issues be impacted by “Undetectable” individuals [based on emerging data]; and how might HIV Stigma be deepened by these same shifts in thinking?

What Is Undetectable? A Call for Contributions. Qué es Indetectabilidad? Esta es una convocatoria para las contribuciones.

What Is Undetectable? A call for articles, opinions, personal stories, visual art, and other content that seeks to explore this question as well as how we relate to undetectability as sero-negative/positive/undetectable people.

Given undetectability’s fluidly-defined nature, class barriers that severely limit access, and the varying levels of acknowledgement and effective treatment that we experience at the hands of the “western” medical system, understandably we may have many different relationships to undetectability. A wide variety of perspectives are sought.

Suggested topics include: storytelling of personal experiences; undetectability & stigma; the pharmaceutical industry, profit & undetectability; undetectability & medical autonomy; transmission rates & risk reduction; undetectability & bare-backing; and racial & class barriers to undetectability. We welcome contributions that explore the intersection of undetectability with other issues or topics besides these as well.

Contributions can be submitted directly via tumblr, either anonymously or with your name attached. Contributions can also be emailed to [email protected].

Qué es Indetectabillidad? Esta es una convocatoria para artículos, opiniones, historias personales, artes visuales, y otro contenido que busque responder esta pregunta así como la manera cómo nos relacionamos con la indetectabilidad desde la perspectiva de personas sero-negativas/positivas/indetectables.

Debido a que la indetectabilidad es por naturaleza una definición fluida, las barreras de clase que limitan severamente el acceso, y los diferentes niveles de reconocimiento y tratamiento efectivo que experimentamos en manos del sistema de la medicina “occidental”, es comprensible que tengamos muchas y distintas relaciones hacia la indetectabilidad. Buscamos una amplia variedad de perspectivas.

Algunos tópicos sugeridos son: narrativas de experiencias personales; indetectabilidad & estigma; la industria farmacéutica, lucro e indetectabilidad; indetectabilidad & autonomía médica; tasas de transmisión & reducción de riesgo; indetectabilidad & sexo anal sin condón; y barreras de raza y clase hacia la indetectabilidad. Apreciamos contribuciones que exploren la intersección de la indetectabilidad con otros problemas o tópicos además de estos.
