The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan

Despite Tom Cruise’s best efforts in Vanilla Sky, I still love this album and its artwork. Hard to believe the leafy Jones street is the same one, that a clearly freezing Bob Dylan walked down in 1963.

I saw Tame Impala play at Terminal 5 on Tuesday and I have to say, out of all the songs they played that night the one that stuck with me the most afterwards was “Half Full Glass of Wine.”

Cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m Goin’ Down,” by Vampire Weekend. Although this has been making the rounds on the internets for a while now, anyone who watched the season premiere of Girls on Sunday will recognize it as the closing credits song.

As a Jersey girl, I have a special place in my heart for all things Bruce - especially covers -  and can’t help but enjoy the sweet way in which Ezra Koenig sings one of my favorite songs by The Boss.

A track that’s meant to cheer up the end of the world should be more than capable of shrugging off any January blues you might have. Dent May’s new track is more than up to the task, how can your mood not improve when your hear a sax and synth clap combo. Definitely going on the next party mix.

Like Mac Davis, I believe in music. When I listen to music, or at least certain kinds of music, I feel transported to another place, my mood is elevated, I feel a new sense of harmony, and I am able to focus more clearly on what seems to matter most. A physicist might come along and say that what I call music is merely the scraping of horse’s hairs across cat gut, a mechanical vibration in a particular frequency range. A neurologist might come along and explain that I am merely experiencing the transduction of kinetic energy into electrical energy as processed by neurons in the auditory and higher associative cortices of the brain. And yet, there is something about the music that is hard to reckon in such terms. It would be like saying that a passionate embrace is merely the pressing of flesh on flesh.

“Something always eludes the scientists, the poets, the stargazers, the biologists, the anthropologists,” Anaïs Nin wrote in her diary in 1942.

Now, in a meditation on the limits of neuroscience, Richard Gunderman considers what that “something” might be when it comes to the transcendence music makes us feel.
