His words didn’t slow her down at all, shaking her head as she basically tried to escape him. There was a point she could reach when she knew she needed to walk away and take a minute to calm down before she got too angry, and this was one of those times. Garrett’s health wasn’t something she joked about. “Leave me alone,” she sighed, refusing to turn and look at him, arms crossed over her stomach. Lexi could come back to him later, hopefully, and get his wounds healed up more completely with her abilities, but for now? She needed to be away from him.
“That’s your excuse for everything, Garrett. You aren’t used to it, people don’t care, nobody’s been around to do it. It’s only going to work for so long, because I’m not going anywhere. Get used to me worrying.” The words are tired and exasperated as she finally took a seat, hands rubbing over her face. “Now go sit down.”
A sigh left him, quiet in sound but taking all of his breath with it, before he fell silent, seemingly done with trying to argue. After awhile of just leaving her with silence, he spoke up, voice soft and borderline thoughtful. “When I was a kid, I was told something that always stuck with me. It wasn’t ever a saying, but a lot of thieves came to live by it. When you grow up alone, you grow up strong. There’s no one to help you up, and no one to hold you back. That’s not to say you hold me back--not at all. But I’m just used to relying on myself, and only myself. Asking me to change that so suddenly, to immediately realise that someone cares for me, is like asking you to stop breathing air. It’s my nature; it’s hard to change, but I’m willing to try. And I am trying.”
Limping over to her, he sat on the edge of the bench, a hand resting lightly on her knee. “Lexi, I do appreciate it. I don’t know how to show it, but I really do appreciate it. I don’t want you to worry, but I can’t stop you from it. But I do want you to know I’m not just brushing you off.”
“I’m sorry.” It’s the first thing she can think to say, especially as she withdraws from him as he stirs and sits up. Within seconds, she’s up from the mattress completely, using the backs of her hands to wipe her face clean. “I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.” Thin fingers brushed her hair from her face, her small frame moving across the floor to look out the nearest window.
I’m scared, she wanted to say, to hide herself against him and pray he’d keep her safe the way he did when he’d freed her. What if they come for me? What happens then? Will you give me up to save yourself, too?
“I just want it to be over with,” she admits, though that’s all she’s willing to offer in the way of ‘talking about it’. At least for now. Garrett always seemed to be teeming with his own problems, and it worried her; adding her own to the mix, especially with the burden he’d taken on his shoulders just by rescuing her, was unacceptable.
“Is it safe to go out for walks here, or..?”
“I hardly sleep, anyway, it’s nothing to apologise for.” She’s off the mattress, and he’s already sitting up, pushing the blanket aside before standing, quietly walking to the bottom of the few steps that separated the ‘second’ floor from the first.
His head tilted at her words, and he moves up the steps in a fluid motion, standing behind her but keeping enough space between them so he wasn’t crowding. Even if she wouldn’t elaborate, he could easily pick up what she was going for; she was valuable, she was different. That was a world Garrett understood. It was different when it was a person, but whoever her captors had been before, they didn’t ever see her as a person. Funny how a thief suddenly didn’t care about his treasure the way he did every other trinket.
Pursing his lips slightly, he lets out a quiet hum of pause, only to turn on his heel and open up the various display cases littered around the tower, plucking various pieces of jewelry from within and returning, standing at her side. A few dragonfly barrettes, a simple jeweled necklace, and a multi-string bracelet of white pearls. “It’s not safe to go on walks anywhere, let’s be honest. But go to Basso’s, he has the expensive clothes I take. Wear these, and go to the cemetery, take some of the beggars. Believe it or not, most people tend to avoid the wealthy. Even a lot of thieves; it’s too hard to swipe something from a moving body, and nobody’s ever been attacked for their jewels.”

“You act like it happens every day–ask Basso, I hardly ever get a scratch on me.” Sighs, reaching out and squeezing her shoulder lightly. “I’m fine, okay? You don’t have to worry anymore.”
“I shouldn’t have to ask–” His hand is promptly shrugged away as she stood, sighing as she set down the bandages she’d been clenching so tightly. “Okay. Fine. Fine, Garrett.” And there she goes, out the door to take some time to herself.
"Lexi--Lexi, wait--" Before he can even begin, she's gone, leaving Garrett to sigh to himself and rub his eyes. His attempt to stand and follow her almost ends poorly, a hand shooting out and grasping at the nearest object to keep himself upright, having already forgotten about the wound in his leg. Even if she hadn't truly been dead, it seemed Erin was still haunting him, just in a much more vengeful manner.
Ignoring the ache in his leg, the thief moved to the door, opening it but just leaning against the frame, arms crossed and head bowed. "I'm sorry. I'm not--Basso used to worry whenever I came back to give him his commission with a new bandage, and I told him not to. He's never said a word since then, and I forget that people are prone to caring and being vocal about it. I'm not used to people caring about me."

Scene Breakdown Time:
So, I’ve seen a lot of people complaining expressing how difficult it is to identify with and get to know Garret. So I am here to help. I’m going to completely breakdown one short scene and show you how you get to know Garrett. Trick is…you have to PAY ATTENTION.
Here we go:
Chapter One: Lockdown
Location: The basement of the Crippled Burrick
Scene: Garrett has visited the Clock Tower and realized something is not right. After reading several messages from Basso he heads to the Crippled Burrick to see his friend fence. The first part of this scene is a great place to get a feel for how to read Garrett. He’s not going to say much. In the entire scene which lasts right at four minutes he only speaks 9 single sentence lines. If you are not watching him you are missing out on a lot of clues as to what he’s really thinking.
“I would have chosen the pickle jar Basso. Has a lot more weight.”
Here we see typical Garrett in full Master Thief mode; cocky, self-assured and sassy.
This is his face as he watches Basso’s reaction to his presence. Very guarded, almost wary. The more relaxed expression from just moments ago has closed off.
Now the mask is slipping. His uncertainty is starting to show as Basso gets emotional about the accident and thinking Garrett and Erin were dead. Then Basso demands to know where he’s been.
“I don’t know."
The mask is almost gone. You can see he doesn’t quite understand why Basso is so upset with him and he’s realizing something is very wrong.
Basso picks up the box and as he turns away the mask is gone. Garrett is confused and trying to figure out what is going on. To him the accident just happened and Basso’s next line stuns him.
"Far be it from me to ask where you’ve been for the last fucking year!”
His disbelief, confusion and worry are fully evident now. The mask is completely stripped away, but as soon as Basso looks back over it’s there again. He’s not willing to allow even Basso to see him without it.

“Sure, and I also have the right to say there’s nothing to worry about. I’m not new to this, even if I still come back beaten up a little bit.”
“A little beaten up? Like the bolt I had to pull out of your leg? You’re lucky it didn’t hit an artery, or you would’ve died. I know that doesn’t mean anything to you, but it means everything to me.”
