i made myself at home in the cobwebs and the lies; i’m learning all your tricks, i can hurt you from inside. i made myself a promise, you would never see me cry ‘til I make you. you’ll never know what hit you.

Just two lonely teens hanging out on the catwalk of a billboard across the street from the Nasty Burger where they picked up their late-night, nutrient-deprived dinner. Nothing remarkable called for their communion, simply finding comfort in each other’s ostracized existence was enough of a reason to be out at that hour.
Mindless chatter about nothing in particular somehow turned into Jordan’s heartfelt confession, and Danny found the words so soothing, yet so lame that he couldn’t help but laugh. “I already have one annoyingly dramatic sister -- you’re saying I have to deal with another?” His smile was ( literally ) glowing when he looked over to assure her he was ( mostly ) kidding. “You’re definitely weird enough to be part of my family -- that’s for sure.”

No offense to one of Los Angeles’s most highly regarded institutions, but Charlie had a perfectly justifiable reason as to why she wanted to barf at the sight of the MOCA’s latest temporary exhibition. One might question why she elected to go on the completely optional field trip to the place where her father’s work was most recently being displayed. Especially when it seemed her brother was in the right mind when he threw his permission slip in the garbage upon noting the destination. It should have been obvious to you, question asker: anything was better than being in class all day -- and it wasn’t like she, Charlie Becker, was planning on following the rules the whole time, anyway.
“Psst --” Charlie leaned into her assigned field-trip-buddy’s space as their tour guide walked and talked the students closer and closer to the rotating gallery. “Come with me." She nodded toward the hallway coming up on their left. “They’re gonna notice me ditch if they see you walking around without a buddy.”

she doesn’t know what to say. they’re not each other’s favorite people & if they’d ever said two words to each other, they were never kind. but seeing him like this makes her stomach turn. cobra kai did this. robby did this. it’s not pity that makes her stare a moment too long. it’s the fact that she wants to make this better. & she knows she can’t. “ i hate that this happened. ” she finally bursts, giving the punching bag a strong shove before moving to sit by him. he’s her teammate now. a change of allegiance, a change of heart deserves acknowledgement. it deserves her respect. & she’s willing to work on that now. “ we should’ve done what sensei lawrence said, we should’ve fought them. ”
He didn’t know where he stood with Sam. He knew at one point he was supposed to be afraid of her. Supposed to avoid drawing attention from any of the other students at West Valley High -- especially the popular kids whose judgements were to be taken as word of law. At another point he was supposed to hate her. Supposed to want revenge for what she did to Miguel and the threat she posed to Cobra Kai. And then he was supposed to forgive her. Supposed to forgive everyone -- including himself -- because that would help the dojos better get along. All those things he was taught and told to feel -- none of which he came to enact on his own accord -- just used them to project an image of what he wanted everyone else to see.
Now, that image had shattered. He lost faith in everything that had been driving him before, and not only did he not know where he stood with Sam, he didn’t know where he stood with himself. He didn’t know what he was supposed to do next; he just wanted it all to be over.
“Well, it happened.” He shrugged and turned away from her, hiding his face behind the shadow of his hood. “I’ve taken enough of Sensei Lawrence’s advice. And your dad’s. None of it worked. If we fight them, they’re just going to keep fighting back.”

You know how when you know something really, really bad is coming and you think that since you know it’s coming it won’t be as bad as it would have been if you hadn’t expected it at all, but then it turns out that thing was more of a bummer than you ever could have prepared yourself for, so it wouldn’t have mattered whether you were waiting for it your whole life or it had come out of nowhere? Reggie’s existence had been peppered with quite a few of those obviously inevitable yet unexpectedly devastating disappointments. Kinda like how he knew his folks would never show up to one of his gigs, or how he knew he was supposed to be staying away from the HGC.
Every night spent there, dancing with her under the lights and splendor -- was just him pretending to push back the deadline of never being able to see her again.
He felt his cheeks light up in that embarrassing, juvenile way that they did when he felt anything too strongly. He blinked away the sting of tears, and held her hands a little tighter as they stood in the threshold of where the Hollywood Ghost Club met the lifer-ridden outside world. “I know, Stella,” he said with a voice that was damped into a whisper by the sadness that overwhelmed him, and more surprisingly: a smile. “These are your people. This is your home.” He leaned in so their foreheads were almost touching, shook his head, “This is where your horse is,” and laughed as best he could.
“You bring so much good stuff to this place. It’s beautiful and bright and happy when you’re here -- it’d probably be pretty sad and shitty if you weren’t. And I don’t have the right to ask you to leave any of that . . . And I’ve got my own family to brighten up, so . . . Just -- before, you know, I go. I want you to know that I don’t think you’re not my family. Family isn’t something that goes away just because you don’t see someone anymore.”

she’s never truly stopped having faith in him. she’d always hoped he would find his way back to himself, learn from his mistakes, come out the other side. she’d watched him dangle off a cliff —– he was ready to give up on himself. naturally, she wasn’t. when does she ever not root for a person she cares for ? when does she ever hold a grudge ? & what do you know ? it paid off. “ eli, wait ! ” she calls out as she crosses the parking lot, goofy smile taking up her whole face. “ you kicked ass in there ! the right way. ” a beat. “ i’m really proud of you. ”
Being himself didn’t mean being Eli the Freak or Hawk the Asshole. He didn’t have to feel lost not being able to fully embrace either of the two identities. He didn’t need to sink back into invisibility and let the world decide his fate for him – nor did he need to spend all his energy trying to kick fate in its metaphorical ass. There was a healthy balance that he could achieve. And not a tightrope kind of balance where if he leaned too far in either direction he’d accelerate towards his doom at a rate of 9.807 meters per second per second. It was more like: as long as he managed to stay upright as he put one foot in front of the other, he’d be doing pretty okay.
It wasn’t the infamous Johnny Lawrence or legendary Daniel LaRusso who taught him that. Well – they did sorta teach him some of that. But the only one who really knew how to get it through his thick skull was the effervescent Scarlett Moon Mcconnell.
He wasn’t planning on leaving the tournament before seeing her. How could he not follow up with her after that? But after spending some time lingering around the venue, he thought maybe it’d be better to give her some space and not rush into things – especially with how much space and adjustment was needed while the two of them were getting used to being friends. But once he heard his name leave her lips he remembered how easy it was for him to lie to himself.
He smiled, shook his head, and let out an almost-laugh as she ran over to him, shining like a celestial body on the dim blacktop. He didn’t reach his arms out to catch her like he wanted to. Instead, he gripped the strap of his duffle bag and ran his fingers through the strange short hair on top of his head. “Thanks.” His posture relaxed a bit as he shifted his weight on the pavement. “That means a lot. Coming from you . . . I’m only just now kinda figuring out that I can choose whose opinion of me matters. I’m sorry I didn’t realize that before. And I’m sorry I still had so much shit to figure out when we were . . . you know.”
