During this particular lull, she chose to entertain herself by stacking the free, gym-branded ballpoint pens up lincoln log style into an impressively tall, and less-impressively precarious tower. She was carefully placing one atop and considering going out back to get another box of 'em when the front door opened and startled her -- sending her creation toppling and scattering the merchandise across the lobby floor.

She pivoted quickly and put on her brightest customer-service smile -- as if everything about the scene was totally normal.

The first thing Charlie noticed as reality resurfaced was the throbbing pain at the back of her head. "Ugh.." Not a concussion -- probably.
