How Often Should You Change Your Tires?

Never underestimate your tires, they are an integral part of your vehicle. It’s the tires that determine how safe your car is, not the airbags. It’s the tires that determine what roads you can drive on, not the engine. Even how fast your vehicle can go is determined by your tires, not your speedometer.

  Unfortunately, the tires are also one of those parts of your vehicle that is most likely to need frequent replacing, this due to the friction these experience being in constant contact with the driving surface.

  How do you know when to replace your tires? How often should you replace your tires?

  Mechanics recommend you replace tires every six years, but they also stress you should replace tires when you see signs of damage and wear. It does not matter if you have fancy custom wheels or discount tires, all tires will eventually outlive their purpose.

  So what signs should you look out for?

  Cracks

  Yes, even a rubber surface can develop cracks, especially if the tire is often exposed to extreme weather. Cracks can expose the steel belts of your tires to the elements, water will wet the belt and rust may set in when it is exposed to air, causing internal damage you may not even see.  

  Tread wear

  Those groove patterns on your tires are called treads, these treads give your car the traction it needs and also channel water out of your path and prevent your car from hydroplaning during rain or when travelling on wet surfaces.

To check for tread wear you can use a tread depth gauge, these are easy to buy from any auto parts dealership or online. Those who are too cheap to spring for a tread depth gauge can also use a Lincoln penny.

  Place the penny with Lincoln facing you upside down in the center of the tread, which is the thickest part of the tire. If you can see the very top of Lincoln's head or the copper above it, replace that tire immediately. If you cannot see the hair on the top of his head then that tires does not need replacing yet.

  There is more good news for you lazy ones who can’t be bothered to buy a gauge or hunt for a Lincoln penny. Newer tires now have a tread indicator bar. These bars, invisible or barely visible when the tires are new, gradually begin to appear with constant use of the tire.

  Vibrations

  A certain amount of vibration is acceptable when driving on certain surfaces, but when this becomes too much then that means there is something wrong. Vibration could mean your wheels are unbalanced or that your shock absorbers are about done for. It can also mean your tire is not fitted properly to your wheel and that may result in slow air pressure loss.

  It does not take so much effort to make sure your tires are safe, but doing so will not only give you a smooth driving experience, it will also ensure a safe one.
