Reflection
Studio 1 Communication Design was a complicated course as it was separated into a Lecture, a Studio and Essentials Study, which was yet again separated into three different classes. It was sort of mind-BLOGging. (Get it? Mind-boggling - Mind-blogging because Tumblr? No, okay.)
My studio classes was interesting as we had little activities involving PlayDoh and lots of sketching done during class. I do love doing my work digitally, but sketching in class with everyone else is a different feeling and we get to see various art styles. I chose to create my metamorphosis cards without using any softwares except to touch up the digital PDF files for submission as sketching in class brought back memories of how much I used to love drawing when I was younger.
Essentials class on the other hand, was at one point enjoyable but then everything went haywire the moment I found out we were required to compile all three Essentials into one document. The thing is, the documents were not meant to relate to each other except having a consistent design and typographical management throughout the document. Somehow I thought it was supposed to be related and made myself confused.
Last but not least, there were a few ups and downs, some worse than others but I managed to overcome them. I have learnt new skills knowledge throughout this semester, especially on how food can be used as a tool for design.
Metamorphosis Cards Final Artwork
I used cut outs to show the Earth morphing into the apple. It was later used to cut out the core of the apple in the shape of a skeleton.
Studio 1 Comm Design 2017 | food event
Food as creativity, food as friendshipÂ
What I enjoyed:Â
Seeing a lot, A LOT of amazing work, skills, talents, and creativity
How everyone worked so closely with each other
How everyone has gotten so much closer since day one
Last but not least, Andy serving free ice cream :PÂ
The event wasnât anything big or fancy but think it was a really nice, cozy way to celebrate the end and the success weâve achieved over the year. Cheers to Andy for being so understanding all the time! and to everyone else in this course: yâall just amazing :)
andâŚ. the Final Design!!! | My Final Nasi Lemak recipe book :)
Food as love, food as culture
This recipe centres around the idea of unfolding to the surprise that is hidden inside, just like how a traditional Nasi Lemak is wrapped in a triangle with banana leaf. Not only my favourite food growing up but it also reminds me a lot of my childhood and the beauty of the Malaysian culture.Â
I can feel the Malaysian vibe just from looking at your artwork <3

Lovely neatly organised high colour conceptual photography for Elite Concepts. Print campaign to reflect the different personalities of 4 different restaurants in Asia, that are part of the innovate hospitality group.
A gorgeous and HIGHLY organised display of items that encompass the restaurant dining experience: the food, drink cutlery, interior decor and elements.
FINAL CARDSÂ
Rather than a straightforward metamorphosis process, I decided that I wanted to make all the cards connect and have a smooth flow from one card to the other. The purpose of making it this way was so that I could document the whole process of whaling, and I found that this was more impactful in terms of the emotional impact it leaves on those who are viewing it. I wanted there to be a gradual change in the tone and mood from the first few cards as being very peaceful and harmonious to all the tragedy that happens towards the end.Â
Though I tried digitally drawing, I found that watercolour was still the best medium because I loved how I could control the opacity and transparency of the paint. Moreover, it also adds a very delicate and graceful effect which worked well for my topic.Â
To set the scene of my theme, the first few cards show whales swimming harmoniously together, where a monochromatic colour scheme was used to further create a sense of calmness. The mood and tone of my cards had a big turn on the fifth card where a whale was being captured by a whaling ship. The introduction of the bold colour red evoked tension within the piece and it was also very alarming. The choice of using the colour red was not only to symbolise danger but it was also a link to Japan.Â
The next imagery then shows a whale swimming towards a red dot, as though it is being captured by it. Again, this was to symbolise Japanâs involvement with whaling and their refusal to abide a 1986 moratorium set by the International Whaling Commission (IWC), an âoathâ different nations take to stop commercial whaling.Â
I chose to focus mostly on Japanâs infamous whaling habits mainly because there have been many who protest against it even their citizens. They claim that the small whaling fleet they sent out into the Antarctic Ocean to kill 333 minke whales were for a âscientific programâ. Hence, on my fifth card, I have the words, âfake researchâ written on the ship. To further emphasise my views and the views of many who are against it, I included protest signs in the seventh card.
After demonstrating the whole process of whales are caught and then killed, the last metamorphosis stage was to transform it into actual meat that people eat and serve at restaurants. The fancy plate of whale meat on the eleventh card was meant to show how a majestic creature from the sea is sold to become nothing but a food experience.Â
I chose to do very detailed illustrations of the whales and the whole process of whaling because I found that a realistic style gives more depth to these creatures and it definitely earns more sympathy because of that. The realism in these illustrations is confronting and could even be described as brutal, which was also what I hope to achieve because I want to impact those who are viewing it and create conversation through my imagery. Overall, I enjoyed making these cards because I found myself becoming more and more passionate about the topic after doing in depth research on it.
These are so good!! Love how detailed it is.
âMosaic Sushiâ Trend From Japan Turns Lunch Into Edible Works Of Art
âPretty sweet designâ
Sushi turned into a form of art by setting the blocks into a mosaic pattern. Almost looks too pretty to eat!
Such a creative way to set up a bento and it looks pretty too!
Week 10 - Metamorphosis WIP
My hands are so tired from dotting each of these cards but it will all be worth it in the end!
Week 9 - WIP
Metamorphosis cards in progress. I started outside the circle/Earth first before tracing the contents of the circle. I dotted the perimeter of the circle, slowly making it further and further away from the circle to create a sense of distance.

Week 8 - Studio
We had a little activity in class today and it involves using PlayDoh. We read a story about Gregor Samsa who woke up one morning and found himself changed into a monstrous vermin. We were required to visualise and create the characters from the story with PlayDoh. We then sketched our âcharactersâ and I made mine look gruesome which was inspired by the story due to the way the character was described.
Week 8 - Lecture
During this weekâs lecture, a few slides caught my attention. A few art students from the National Taiwan University of the Arts concocted artworks called âPolluted Water Popsiclesâ. The students collected polluted water from 100 locations in Taiwan, freezing and preserving their creations in polyester resin. The project is intended to spread awareness about water pollution and its deep effect on our worldâs population.Â

Week 7 - WIP
My metamorphosis cards are basically about how global warming affects the production of food. Most people know about how it affects the ice caps but not many are aware that the production of food in certain parts of the world is declining. And so, I started planning what and how each card is going to look and also tried out a few different ways to draw/sketch the metamorphosis process.Â
Week 7 Lecture: Experience design
In this weekâs lecture Andy touched on experience design in relation to food. He showed us several examples of how the experience of consuming food with others can be a very valuable and memorable experience.
British artist Damien Hirstâs Pharmacy Restaurant is particularly intriguing, featuring clinical-themed interiors that use images of pills and tablets embedded into the marble floor and embroidered onto leather banquettes. The seats are also in the shape of tablets and walls are covered with charts of pills and pharmaceutical products.
I love the futuristic and âspaceâ aesthetic of the restaurant with all its colour. The design of the interior creates a fun, quirky yet scientific vibe to the space, and I can only imagine the anticipation and enjoyment of eating in there. This is a good example of how art and food can be combined together to create a unique and memorable experience for the consumer.
Mai Uedaâs âhave tea not waterâ tea gathering is another example of experience design, where guests are asked to wear a panda costume to ensure that they are feeling content and peaceful inside in order to take part in the tea ceremony. The ceremony itself is traditional in its practice, but at the same time includes an element of design to it such as the Memphis styled boxing ring, spherical lamps and bright-coloured pillows.
The calm and gentle aura of the ceremony is a completely different experience to sitting in the stimulating environment of Hirstâs pharmacy restaurant. The peace and tranquillity of the ceremony is what I want to include within my own video seeing as I am exploring matcha latte, another beverage that is said to relax and soothe.
In order to make up for the deficiencies of city life in Tokyo with its lack of open spaces to gather, Tokyo Picnic Club insists the âPicnic Rightâ as a basic right for urban dwellers. As stated on their website, âWe just want the places to have our picnic. We need neither benches nor worthless waterworks. We simply want the spacious lawnâ.
The group dedicates itself to re-defining picnic activities within an urban context, such as this space at Gateshead Quays that was transformed into a picnic area with hundreds of airplane picnic mats. I like how this group emphasises how valuable a experience coming together and sharing a meal can be among busy city life.
Overall, these examples have taught me how the experience (environment and company) of eating food is just as valuable as the consumption of eating the food itself. There is a clear correlation among all these examples in that each of the designs focus on taking the consumer into another reality and to uplift their experience of eating the food rather than focusing on the food itself. It is all about enjoyment and comfort within the space among company, and forgetting about the stresses of everyday life.Â
In terms of how this ties into my project, these examples of food experience design have further confirmed my design need to really encapsulate the mood and environment of drinking Matcha Latte. Ideally the viewers should be able to enjoy the experience or journey that is presented to them visually as they cannot taste the latte themselves. This is something that I need to take into account and work more on going further into the project.Â

Week 6// Today we created paint brushes with vegetables, connecting then to sticks with string the fabric. This allowed us to work with ink, paper and a range of textures, sizes, weight and form of the vegetables to paint letters.
This looks interesting! Too bad I missed this class.
