Caitlin

Played by Leila Mimmack.

Caitlin is Hattie's more rebellious twin sister. Although coming from a very loving home she has always felt that she lived in her sister's shadow. Hattie is a straight A student and loves nature and spending time in the woods whereas Caitlin has never fulfilled her potential at school and is more interested in boys and stealing drinks from her parents drinks cabinet.

On the day of the parade when Caitlin sees that the Mayday queen's throne is empty she knows that something bad has happened to her sister. While her parents are distracted by the terrible situation they find themselves in, Caitlin's relationship with Linus grows and he offers to try and help her find the truth of what has happened Hattie.

Caitlin is sent messages that seem to be trying to tell her something. Is it twin intuition or just coinsidence? Will these messages lead her to the answers she is searching for?

Linus

Played by Max Fowler.

Linus is older than his years. He is individual, intelligent, funny and assured but there is also a darker side to him.

His mother died when he was a young child, leaving him in the hands of Everett – his extremely distant father. Their strained relationship has made him cynical and suspicious of those around him. He is the adult in he and his father’s relationship and often acts as his unlikely carer.

The dysfunctional upbringing has forged Linus into a true survivor who sees deep into the adult world. He has always been in love with Caitlin, Hattie’s twin sister. As she becomes the most important thing in his life, he’ll do anything to protect her, even if that means hiding the truth of his own suspicions.

Everett

Played by Aiden Gillen.

Everett was one of life’s optimists. He was funny, irreverent and spontaneous until his life was destroyed by the tragic death of his wife in suspicious circumstances.

He has never been able to share the reality of what happened with his son Linus and the secret has consumed him. Disconnected from his son, Everett effectively lives his life alone, emotionless. He is still attractive to the opposite sex and tries to lose himself in sexual dalliances and non-committal relationships. How well did he know their neighbour Hattie?

Fiona

Played by Sophie Okenedo.

Fiona is an ex police officer and has left the force to look after her three children.

Deep down she knows that if she had continued at work she would have made it as a CID detective, but now she just channels her energy into being a full-time mum. She still believes in the importance of tradition and community, is proud of her family’s place in the town and her ability to know all of it’s goings on.

Hattie babysat for the family and Fiona’s police instincts are triggered by Hattie’s disappearance - she is determined to find her. Charlotte, Fiona’s oldest is especially affected by Hattie going missing and starts to feel suspicious and paranoid of everyone around her.

Alan

Played by Peter McDonald.

Alan is the kind of bloke that everyone could have predicted would become a copper: He's tough, no nonsense and straight-laced.

He’s a good husband and doting father to his children – he’d do anything for his family and he and Fiona are a good team. He knows his wife would have probably have made it further in the police than him and he’s happy that she is now at home with the kids so that he’s able to be the main breadwinner in the family.

On the day of Hattie’s disappearance, he claims to have had a work-related altercation with another young girl. But is he telling the truth?

Gail

Played by Leslie Manville.

Gail, an ex-model, met Malcolm at a promotional event while she was handing out cigarettes. She was treated like a goddess by him and was able to fulfill her dream of living in the biggest house with fresh flowers in every room.

Over the years the relationship has suffered due to Malcolm’s commitment to his development company and they are now trapped in an almost loveless marriage. She loves her son James and the dog Duke and delights in overfeeding them both as an expression of her affection. Her and Malcolm are distant from each other now and she has little knowledge of who he really is…

Malcolm

Played by Peter Firth.

Malcolm is a very successful local public figure, proud of his achievements and self-made millions. He met Gail when she was a young model and made her his trophy wife. However, since their marriage went sour, he’s become a much more private person.

Their marriage was initially happy but recently it has been marred by Malcolm’s ongoing, embarrassing feud with Hattie Sutton as she successfully campaigned to prevent him building on local ground.

Ever since, Malcolm has kept business affairs to himself but the disappearance of Hattie forces him to confront matters he desperately needs to keep secret.

Steve

Played by Sam Spruell.

Steve feels happiest when bonded with others in a group, driven by a sense of mission – he’s a natural vigilante. He’s not the brightest spark, but he’s driven by a strong sense of responsibility and a need to prove himself. So when Hattie goes missing, Steve relishes the opportunity to help on the search for her – not least because it gives him a chance to once again make a good impression on the Sutton family as Hattie’s mum is his ex-wife’s sister.

He’s also keen to draw attention away from his troubled brother, Seth, who dwells in the woods. The brothers spent a difficult childhood apart and Steve feels a lot of guilt towards his brother. He is desperate to protect Seth when he sees him with something of Hattie’s on the afternoon that she goes missing.

Seth

Played by Tom Fisher

Steve’s younger brother, Seth is considered weird and strange by the rest of the town.

Unbeknownst to them however, Seth has a personality disorder that was triggered by his time being treated badly in care and there is a side to him he can’t control. As a result, he spends a great deal of time in the local woods, where he feels protected by nature and away from the fear of other people.

He’s a very spiritual person and feels bonded to Hattie, who he admired for her special connection to the natural world.
