Whether you know it or not, a lot of makeup brands you use every day test on animals. In America it is not legal to test on animals. Unfortunately, the law doesn’t stop most brands. The Chinese government conducts mandatory animal tests on all cosmetic products imported into the country Although in other countries, it is not required by law, but several tests are commonly preformed. These tests expose mice, rats, rabbits and guinea pigs to cosmetics ingredients. At the end of a test the animals are killed, normally by neck-breaking or decapitation. Pain relief is not provided. In the United States, a large percentage of the animals used in such experiments are not counted in official statistics and receive no protection under the Animal Welfare Act. Even though most companies may think this is beneficial to their company, it is not. Companies can use products that are already classified as safe. They have already been tested in the past and do not need anymore testing. There are other test, that do not include the testing of animals. Over fifty non-animal tests have been validated for use. These modern alternatives can offer results that are not only more relevant to people, but more efficient and cost-effective. Saying this, the European Union has banned cosmetics tested on animals, since animal testing is not the only option present but still is used. When shopping for makeup look for the leaping bunny.
