The lights shone brightly in the crowded living space, presents slowly piling up around the small tree Tallan had perfectly fit in front of the bookcases. Baubles filled each and every branch of the tree, alongside the handmade plaits of ribbon that Sean had spent the week making that snaked up the tree. Glaucus handed another present to Elliot, leaning over the huge pile of gifts with tags that read "Sean" in neat, clear writing.
"I think this is the last few gifts now. Just need to fill their stocking and then we're done." Glaucus whispered, a glance at the door way as they picked up the empty bag and started folding it neatly to be stashed away from prying eyes.
"Before midnight as well. I thought it might've taken longer." Elliot's voice was hushed, a smile that widened at the sight of all the presents dotted and piled around the room. The grin hadn't left their face since making sure Sean was asleep a few hours earlier, tucked away and the curtain gently pulled to, leaving the Christmas lights to shine through the gap, catching on the little trinkets and toys lined up on the floor, ready to catch Santa in the act.
"It should've taken longer; look at the amount of presents everyone has. You'll be lucky if you can find somewhere to put everything of Sean's." Elliot stifled a laugh at that, making their way around the huge pile of Sean's presents to stand in front of Glaucus. Elliot smoothed their hands on the white fur he wore, smile softening at the feel.
"Thank you for this by the way. I know you're tired."
"I could be dead on my feet and I'd still help you with whatever you asked." He smiled down at Elliot, hands coming up to brush some pine needles from around the base of Elliot's ears. They flicked at the contact as Elliot's hands wandered up to Glaucus' neck, and his down to Elliot's waist, pulling their robe around them tighter to ward of the chill radiating from the windows.
"As much as I appreciate the offer, I couldn't do that to you. Do you wanna help with the stockings, or head to bed? I can get them done easy enough and join you later?" Glaucus shook his head, a smile brightening his eyes.
"No need. We can split it and get it done twice as quick. Then you can help me out of this fluff, its driving me 'round the bend." Elliot leant back, kept standing by Glaucus' hands on their waist, thumbs rubbing small circles into their ribs.
"Well if that isn't a great incentive to let you help." Elliot smiled, leaning forward to press their lips against his. A sigh fell from his lips, melting into the embrace as thumbs brushed the fur collar away from Glaucus' neck. Elliot leaned back just far enough to laugh breathlessly, Glaucus following the movement to press against their lips once more quickly. "Come on, if We're quick we can get enough sleep to not be dead asleep when Travis, Nicole and Dante show up. I don't find the idea of being woken up with carols the most appealing way to start Christmas Day." With a smile, Elliot pressed a final kiss to Glaucus' lips before pulling away, pushing the fluff away from his neck one last time. Holding onto his hand, Elliot gently guided them around the piles of presents to the kitchen, stockings hung on the mismatched chairs crowded around the table, 3 extra stockings and chairs for Travis, Nicole and Dante. The six stockings were quickly filled, small gifts easily held within the oversized socks. Glaucus left out a small laugh, holding up the stockings he was currently filling.
"I see your ears were always too big for you Sweets." A smirk graced his face, turning the stockings around the show Elliot the childhood photo framed on the stocking. Large limp ears filled most of the image, framing big red eyes and a large smile, missing tooth and chocolate on the face clear and proud. Elliot let out a short laugh, before quickly covering their mouth and darting their eyes towards the doorway, ears flicking in the direction of Sean's room, listening out for any movement or sounds. They turned back to Glaucus, stood with a large grin spread across his face, all presents finally tucked away into their respective stockings. He let out a quiet laugh, hanging the stocking carefully on the back of the chair and making his way around the table to take Elliot's hand and press a kiss to their fingers.
"All sorted. Everything's ready for tomorrow. Happy? Calm?" His voice was a whisper, pressing his forehead to Elliot's and letting out a small sigh of contentment.
"Happy. Calm. Ready to sleep now?" Glaucus pressed a lingering kiss to Elliot's lips in lieu of an answer. Elliot laughed softly, twisting their hands to entwine their fingers, Elliot's free hand lifting to fiddle with the bell on the end of Glaucus' antlers. "Go sneak past Sean's room for me and close the hallway window. Just as a final touch. I'll get some extra blankets and pillows in the living room for tomorrow and then we can sleep. Last thing, I promise." Glaucus shook their head with a smile.
"Last thing. Then I'm carrying you to bed, otherwise neither of us are gonna sleep and Nicole really will wake us all up with her carol singing." Elliot smiled, leaning forward to laugh into Glaucus' shoulder.
"Alright, deal. Last thing then sleep. I'll be quick." Elliot pressed another kiss to Glaucus lips before spinning away to find the spare blankets and pillows hidden away in the chest in the living room as Glaucus stepped carefully towards th hallway, taking note of the way Sean's curtain was much more open than Elliot had left it. A smile graced his face, and with a shake of his head and a breathless laugh, he stepped carefully down the hallway, boots landing solidly with each step towards the window at the end of the hallway. He shuffled about with the curtains and shook his head about a bit to make the bell hanging from his antlers jingle just loud enough, before pulling the window closed. He stepped out of the boots and carefully untangled the bell from his antlers, leaving it on the window sill as he picked up the boots and tiptoed silently back down the hallway, peeking into the living room to see Elliot placing a large cushion on the floor by the fireplace. He shook his head, sliding the boots under the closest armchair, and gently taking Elliot's hand, pulling them closer and into his arms, winding them around their waist in a tight hug.
"Bedtime. Before we fall asleep in here and Sean finds me dressed like this." Elliot giggled quietly, turning in Glaucus' arms and wrapping their arms around his neck and he lifted them up and turned towards Elliot's bedroom. The curtain across the door way tangled in Glaucus' antlers, making Elliot laugh as they reached up to free their antlers. Their ears brushed against the drapes and lights hung across the ceiling, perked up in joy as they were. The lights illuminated Elliot's flushed face, bright with joy and contentment as Glaucus gently lowered them to sit on the edge of the bed, kneeling in front of them, arms folded over their knees and head rested on top, staring up at Elliot as their hand immediately drifted to rest in the soft curls on Glaucus' head. His eyes slid shut, focused on the feeling of nails gentle scratching against his scalp.
"Tired?" Elliot asked, their free hand moving to brush the fluff away from Glaucus' neck, slipping their hand down to try and reach the fastening at the top of the Santa jacket he had been sporting since Elliot had convinced Sean to head off the bed. Glaucus just hummed in response, turning his body slightly to help Elliot, reaching for the lower buttons and belt that had been keeping the jacket on his frame. "How about you come up here, we get that jacket off, and then actually sleep nstead of just talking about it?" Glaucus let out a tired laugh, short and quiet, nodding as they shifted again. Elliot smiled, holding onto his hands to help pull him up. He stumbled slightly, the exhaustion of the day and night settlindeep in his bones. He fell forward onto Elliot, just as they managed to shift backwards on the bed and tuck their feet up. They let out a short laugh, pushing the jacket fully off Glaucus' shoulders, leaving him in just his vest. Elliot pulled on it gently, coaxing Glaucus to sit up over Elliot's thighs for it to be pulled off. A long sigh left his lips as he lay back down carefully, resting his head on Elliot's chest, antlers angled away from their face.
Elliot smiled down at him as sleep began taking over them as well, just managing to pull a blanket over the both of them to ward off the cold breeze floating in through the window. "Goodnight love."
A gentle poking against Elliot's cheek carefully brought them out of their dreamless sleep, eyes opening to see a cautious smile hovering over them. They could still feel the gentle puffs of breathe against their shoulder, signalling Glaucus' was still asleep on top of them. One hand lifted from his back to sign a slow and sleepy 'Good morning' to Sean, kneeling on the bed beside Elliot's head. Sean responded with a shaky smile, fingers fidgetting in the hem of their sleep shirt.
"Something wrong Petal?" Elliot's smile fell as they whispered, taking in Sean's fidgeting. This was not the excited fidgeting of a child on Christmas morning ready to open presents. This was the fidgeting of a child keeping a secret they never wanted to know. Sean's eyes darted to Glaucus, still sleeping on Elliot's chest, face turned away from them. Their hands lifted just enough to sign.
'I saw you and Santa last night. I thought you and Reindeer were happy.' Elliot had just enough time to bring their free hand to cover their mouth, eyes crinkling in barely held back laughter. Their other hand twisted Glaucus' curls around their fingers, tugging gently enough to not wake him.
"What makes you think we aren't happy together Sean?"
'You were kissing Santa last night. I saw you.' Elliot stifled a laugh again, hand moving in Glaucus' hair down to his neck, twirling the shorter hairs at his nape. 'Are you going to marry Santa?' At that, Elliot wouldn't stifled the laughter bubbling in their throat, leaning forward to hide their laugh in the top of Glaucus' hair. Sean frowned, hitting against their shoulder gently, trying desperately not to wake up Glaucus.
"Sorry, sorry!" Elliot's laughter petered off into quit giggles. "Sorry, but I'm not going to marry Santa, Petal. I just have aโฆ special relationship with Santa. Don't worry Sean. I promise Glaucus and I are still happy and together. That's not going to change any time soon." Sean's frown don't lighten at that.
'What about Santa? You still kissed.' Elliot chuckled lightly, feeling Glaucus' burrow further into their chest as he slowly woke up. Sean didn't notice.
"Santa, Glaucus and I are happily together. G was just too tired to come and see him last night. So I gave him extra kisses from Glaucus and he promised to stop by and see Glaucus tomorrow, just the two of them." Elliot lifted their free hand to brush a curly away and behind Sean's ear. "Does that make you feel better?" Sean though for a moment, before nodding, the frown slowly falling off their face. A small smile slowly formed on Sean's face as the winter sun slowly filtered through the curtains over the bedroom window.
'Food?' Elliot smiled, nodding as they pushed hair from Sean's eyes. "Let me wake G up and when we're all up and dressed, I'll start breakfast." Sean brightened up considerably, bouncing slightly on the bed as they moved off, jostling Elliot and Glaucus. Elliot let out a laugh at the eagerness evident on Sean's face, while Glaucus stifled his laughs into Elliot's chest until Sean was fully out of the room.
"So, we're dating Santa now? When we're you going to tell me about this step in our relationship?" Glaucus' voice was soft with a teasing edge to it as Elliot hid their face in his curls again to laugh.
"Well of course we are. Why else would I be caught kissing Santa as he's putting out all the presents?" Elliot lifted his head up and tugged at Glaucus' curls gently, just enough so his chin was resting on their chest. Twin soft smiles graced their faces, as Glaucus moved forward to press a light kiss to Elliot's lips. He moved away just enough to whisper against their lips.
"Merry Christmas Sweets."
"Merry Christmas Dear." They shared a soft smile and brief kiss once more before Glaucus moved to sit upwards, pulling Elliot with him as the blanket pooled around their hips. The red wooden trousers peaked out from the blanket, making them both laugh at the ridiculousness of their cover up story. "Come on, let's get dressed," Elliot shmmied out from underneath Glaucus, pushing him over so he was laying down against the soft nest of blankets, sheets and pillows. "I'm not sure how long Sean will be willing to wait if my siblings show up before we're dressed and breakfast is cooked." Elliot slid off the bed, paws light on the floor as they stepped towards the overflowing dresser, tugging out a short dress for themself, and a loose shirt and long skirt for Glaucus. They tossed the outfits onto the bed, the shirt landing on Glaucus' face as he lay there, just staring at Elliot in pure content.
"You're amazing." Glaucus' words were soft in the early morning quiet as Elliot dressed, messing with the short skirt of the dress so it fell just right over their tail, patting and smoothing it down in the front before moving upwards to fasten the bow at the back of their neck. They paused for a moment, a dark flush slowly overtaking their face before Elliot jumped on the bed, tackling Glaucus down.
"Shut up! Shut up and start getting ready or I'm throwing your presents out the window!" Laughter erupted from both of them as they wrestled for a moment on the bed before Glaucus eventually ended up hovering above Elliot. Their laughter slowly died down, and he leant down to press soft kisses all over Elliot's face, making them giggle once more before they lifted a hand togently swat at Glaucus' shoulder. "Enough! I mean it, I'll burn your breakfast if you don't start getting ready soon." The words were betrayed by the soft smile on their face as Glaucus rolled his eyes with a laugh before falling to the side and rolling up and off the bed.
"Fine fine, but I'll remember this when I go and see Santa tomorrow. How I was betrayed and left oh so alone on Christmas morning, bullied into doing things when I'm oh so tired and was up all night helping our wonderful partner!" Elliot fell back on the bed at Glaucus' dramatics, watching as he moved around the room, hopping about the get out of the rest of the Santa costume that had barely been hidden from Sean's view by the blanket earlier, hiding the offending item in the trunk under the window. It was Elliot's turn to watch now, as Glaucus moved about gathering the clothes Elliot had grabbed, twirling around in the skirt a few times and swishing it about his legs before nodding to himself and sliding the shirt on, unlacing and re-lacing the front until it lay evenly over his chest, a neat bow tied at the base of his neck. Glaucus fiddled with the cuffs of the sleeves a few times as Elliot slowly rolled off the bed again, smoothing down their skirt again before pressing a kiss to his cheek as they moved out of the room and towards the kitchen, paws soft against the thick rugs patchworked over the wooden flooring.
It was easy enough to spot where Sean had ended up, a path made between the presents piles to the large front window, blankets pulled from their places over the chairs and floors to make a nest on the window bench as Sean looked out of the window at the snow covering the city, lights shining from underneath layers of snow and smoke coming from chimneys. Elliot snuck up behind them carefully, snatching them up in a twirling hug, filled with laughter, both falling into the soft pile under the window.
"Pancakes or waffles?" Elliot asked as the laughter died down, laying on the soft ground together, both breathless in the cold winter morning.
'Pancakes please.' "Then pancakes it shall be. You wanna help me get the toppings ready?" Sean nodded, jumping up and bouncing on their toes as Elliot slowly brought themself up to standing, sweeping an arm out towards the kitchen, gesturing for Sean to head in first. They immediately bounced over to the fridge, getting out punnet after punnet of berries, towering them up on the counter as Elliot moved forward to start making the pancakes, gathering all the ingredients together and lining them up near the stove, pan over the flame and slowly heating up as the mixture was made quickly and smoothly, practised hands swapping ingredients and utensils easily. Sean had only just began placing small bowls on the island in the middle of the kitchen to put the fruit in when Elliot began carefully ladeling the mixture into the fully heated pan, butter bubbling at the edges of each blob of batter. Elliot glanced behind themself over the Sean, watching their intense concentration with a small, private, smile as Sean carefully inspected each piece of fruit before either discarding it, or placing it gently into the bowls. Blackberries, cranberries, orange segments, kiwi slices carefully and evenly.
They continued this routine, Elliot flipping, removing, and starting new batches on pancakes while looking over at Sean organising the fruit, and getting other toppings out of their cupboards or from the counter tops, placing everything neatly in the center of the table. Sugar bowls, a bottle of syrup from Nicole (an apology gift, for using all of it up the last time she was invited to stay the night), the bowls of fruit, the butter bell and butter dish, placed at opposite ends of the table to make sure everyone would be able to reach either vessel. Elliot reached the end of the pancake batter just as Sean began moving plates and cutlery to the table, placing each object one by one from the open cupboard and drawer to the table. It was as they placed the final plate on the table that Elliot removed the last of the pancakes and Glaucus strolled into the room, in a completely different outfit than the one Elliot had left him wearing. Elliot said nothing, just quirked an eyebrow, looking up and down at Glaucus as the moved the tray of steaming pancakes to the center of the table. Glaucus ignored the unspoken question, just spinning around towards Sean and ruffling their hair slightly in thanks. Both of them moved to sit down and tuck into the food, only stopping at Elliot's raised hand.
"Just wait a little bit, then we can eat." A smile spread across their face as Glaucus stood up, sauntering over to stand in front of Elliot, hands instinctively drawn to their waist.
"Surely we can have just one pancake nowโฆ" A smile split his face as Elliot shook their head again, bringing their hand up to pat at Glaucus' cheek.
"And surely you can both wait a few more moments before eating!" Before Glaucus could pipe up with a response, the knock resounded through the apartment before loud, raucous singing permeated from the stairwell door. "How about we go and let in my wonderfully loud siblings and then we can all eat breakfast together? Before they burst in here and decide to open presents first instead?" Elliot smiled a cheeky grin, spinning out of Glaucus hold and towards Sean, grabbing onto their hand and moving towards the stairwell door that doubled as the front door to the apartment.
"I CAN HEAR YOU IN THERE LET ME IN BEFORE I GIVE ALL YOUR PRESENTS TO TRAVIS!" Nicoles voice was loud enough that it was barely muffled by the closed door and windows, as she sang her threats to a festive tune. Elliot reached out to throw the door open just before another verse could begin, immediately greeted by Nicole, Travis and Dante, arms laden with presents and food, their faces barely visible behind the piles they carried. Nicole's arms were empty, just a large container of expensive hot chocolate held in one hand, that was immediately passed over to Sean as she moved into the apartment, arms flung around Elliot.
"Merry Christmas! We bring gifts and food!" Elliot laughed, moving to the side with Nicole still hugging onto him to let Travis and Dante in through the door as well. Glaucus exited the kitchen, a large smile on his face as he moved to start placing the presents from Travis's arms on the floor, giving Dante the same grace until they were both sufficiently saved from the giant piles and at less of a risk of everything toppling over. Travis, Nicole and Dante moved about placing things around the apartment and giving hugs to Elliot, Sean and Glaucus before Elliot noticed Travis's nose twitching slightly, eyes darting quickly towards the kitchen and then back again a few times before they took pity on their family.
"Come on, put everything down and we can have breakfast. I'm sure you guys are as hungry as these two are." Elliot laughed as Nicole immediately dropped the blanket she was moving to the floor and dashed over to the kitchen, Dante and Travis following at a slightly more subdued pace. Sean bounded over, hands frantically signing to Travis about seeing Santa the night before. Glaucus let out a laugh as he caught a few of Sean's signs, before turning to Elliot and holding a hand out towards them.
"Well, shall we join them Sweets? Perfect Christmas morning, that was the plan right?" Elliot smiled, taking Glaucus' hand and pressing a kiss to the tips of his fingers.
"I don't think it could get more perfect than this." Elliot said quietly, as they walked together towards the kitchen, only stopping when Nicoles arm shot out from the side, blocking their path.
"Uh oh! Looks like you found the mistletoe! First to be caught under it and so early in the morning as well. It's almost impressive." A wide grin threatened to split Nicole's face in half as she stood in front of the couple, arms folded over her chest blocking their passage to the kitchen table. Elliot rolled their eyes and shook their head slightly, before looking up between themself and Glaucus at the hastily hung up mistletoe, slightly crushed with leaves threatening to fall.
"Wow, I wonder how that got there." Glaucus said flatly, lips twitching as he tried and failed to keep a smile of his face at the obvious set up. Sean tapped on the table to get their attention before signing, 'Must have been magic.' Elliot laughed at that, before shaking their head once more and turning fully towards Glaucus.
"Guess we're trapped here unable to eat breakfast until we're freed."
"I suppose we are. Maybe we'll just have to go hungry and choose who should open all our presents. A true shame, really. I was looking forward to Christmas this year. Oh well. What can be done?" Dante rolled his eyes from where he was sat at the table, piling fruits from each bowl onto his plate, not even looking over at the spectacle.
"Just kiss and be done with it. It's not like its your first kiss." Elliot and Glaucus looked at each other, over at Dante, then back to each other and burst into laughter. Glaucus leant down, still laughing until his face was hovering just over Elliots.
