What pronouns are commonly used for non-binary people in German? I study German and thought about how they and she would sound just the same. Do you also know of any general vocabulary resource for LBBTQIA+ terms in German? Thanks!

A popular non-gendered pronoun I’ve mostly seen agender people use is xier, which conjugates as xier/xies/xiem/xien. Analogue articles would be dier/dies/diem/dien. Anna Heger has a nice site for pronouns.

Sadly, I don’t know many non-binary people in Germany since the “queer community” is, as usual, toxic for anybody aside from cis and binary trans men, so I can’t tell you a lot out of personal experience. 

Trying to translate they as a personal pronoun into a satisfying German alternative is hell and a thing I actually think about a lot, right before sighing in frustration. There’s always the possibility of using the plural “sie” which is not gendered and gives of the best “they” vibes in my opinion, but then again it sounds like the formal “Sie” when I just talk about my anglophone friends. The workaround is usually talking to your friends who use “they/them” as a pronoun and ask them which translation they’d prefer.

I’m also at a loss of providing you with vocab resources, sorry! But if you’d like to come off Anon, I’ll gladly help translate some terms. Pro-tip: Most Germany is years behind catching up on terminology. We usually just go with the English words or some germanized version of them.

There has recently been a new discussion about this due to a Professor at Humboldt University. They asked their students to rather use ProfX instead of the usual Professor(male) or Professorin(female) I haven’t found an English article aboug this but the name of said prof is Lann Hornscheidt. Two sides erupted, one heavily defending this idea, since as above stated, in terms of pronouns and gender identity wording Germany is quite stuck behind. But sadly Profx Hornscheidt was also attacked under a lot of articles and in internet forums, not only degrading them as a person but also insulting their appearance, skills and likewise, going as far as demanding them fired by the head of the university.

Just wondering, why couldn't one use the neuter to refer to nonbinary people in German? I didn't think it had the same 'inanimate' meaning to it as in English due to German using grammatical gender in the language, unlike English. (Esp. considering one would use es to refer to children or girls, for example.)

Well, there are some non-binary and trans people that actually prefer "es" as a pronoun, but I know many who are very opposed to that. While "es" doesn't always refer to inanimate objects, it usually does which comes with all the fun connotations of cis people referring to non-binary and trans people as "er ... nein, sie ... ach, es halt" which is more than dehumanizing for most of us.
