I sighed turning around to look at myself in the mirror once more, my mouth twisted to the side as I studied the third outfit I had tried on. I wanted to believe I looked as good in it as Katie had convinced me when we were at the mall. I wiped at the tear that threatened to fall down my face. I don’t know why I agreed to go out tonight anyways, I thought it would help me feel better after the break up but as I looked at myself in the mirror all the things he said to me were running through my head.
My body didn’t fall under society's standard notion of beauty. I was always a little bit heavier than most, my stomach being a bit rounder, my thighs a bit larger and my arms a bit jiggly. It was always something that I struggled with, but being told by someone that you love that they are breaking up with you because of your weight will really mess with you. I used to enjoy buying new clothes and getting dressed up, but now all I see are my flaws. I did what I could to keep my mind off my body image, but it's not easy with social media being a constant reminder. I spent most of my days in t-shirts and sweatpants praying the baggy clothes wouldn’t call unwanted attention to my stomach.
I sighed again as I pulled the shirt over my head and replaced it with a t-shirt. I didn’t feel up to going out anymore, being unable to like anything on my body really put a toll on my mental health.
I sent Katie a quick text to let her know I wanted to stay in. I knew she was worried about me, but she was the only one who knows why Dalton really broke up with me and didn’t have the heart to drag me out to a bar when she knew how much I was struggling. Katie tried to convince me to tell Calum but I couldn’t bear the thought of someone else pitying me. Everyone else though that Dalton and I broke up over commitment issues and I let them think that. It was less embarrassing than the truth. Katie tried to tell me that Dalton was the one who should be embarrassed for how he treated me at the end, but whenever she tried to bring it up I changed the subject. I wasn’t ready to admit that I believed everything he said about me.
I trudged down to the kitchen to find something to eat, I was really craving some comfort food but after being upset with how I looked in every outfit I opted to make a salad. I plopped down on the couch mindlessly scrolling through Netflix before settling on New Girl. My pity party was interrupted by two quick knocks on the door. I hoped they had the wrong apartment, but two more knocks quickly followed. I groaned as I stood up and trudged my way to the door. I looked through the peephole and saw Calum in the hallway holding a pizza.
“Go away, I’m not in the mood,” I called through the door.
“Come on Y/N open up! Katie told me you canceled again tonight. I”m not letting you spend another Friday night alone.”
I mentally cursed Katie, vowing to send her a strongly worded text later.
“I’m fine Cal really, just had a long week.”
“I’m not leaving Y/N, and if you don’t let me in I’ll just sit out here singing all night.”
I hit my head against the door knowing Cal wasn’t going anywhere. I unlocked the door and walked back to the couch knowing he would hear it and come in automatically. I picked up my salad, taking another bite but I lost my appetite at the smell of the pizza wafting from the kitchen.
“Where are all your plates? Nevermind I’m bringing the whole box in, I’m starving anyway.”
He set the pizza down on the coffee table and threw his body on the couch next to me, nearly crushing me under his weight.
“Cal...can’t...breathe,” I muttered. “Why are you crushing me?”
“Missed you, we’ve barely hung out since I got back from tour. You’ve been avoiding me.”
“Have not.” I pushed at his chest and managed to create enough space between the two of us that I was able to scoot back to the other side of the couch. Calum sat up and pouted at me, while I just rolled my eyes at him.
“Have so, ever since you broke up with Dalton you’ve shut me out. I’ve tried to give you space but I can’t standby anymore knowing that you're hurting and do nothing to help.”
“Cal I really am okay, I just needed time to process.” I glanced over to him to see that he was staring at me with a look of disbelief on his face.
“You know I can tell when you’re lying. If you’re as fine as you say you are then why haven’t you touched the pizza I brought. I got it plain with extra cheese and a large side of ranch. You’re favorite.”
I shrugged, “I’m not hungry,” I mumbled, not even believing my own lie. “I had a salad.”
“You mean the one sitting there that looks barely eaten,” he looked at me, his eyebrow raised, clearly seeing through my bullshit. “Katie told me that there is more to your breakup with Dalton than you’re leading on. Plus talk to me Y/N, I’m worried about you.”
I sighed and pulled the nearest blanket over my body, I felt nearly naked under Calum’s stare. He always had a way of knocking down my defences and convincing me to let him help. I didn’t want his help this time though, I was too scared to admit that Dalton was right about me, I had barely admitted it to myself, let alone tell Cal. We sat there in silence, him waiting for me to speak and me playing with the edge of the blanket praying he would drop it.
“Hey,” Cal reached out and placed his hand on my knee, “you can tell me anything you know that right?”
I don’t know if it was the look of concern in his eyes or the comfort from the circles he was rubbing on my knee but my walls were slowly breaking down like they always did around Calum.
“I lied to you about the breakup like Katie said, we didn’t break up because Dalton couldn’t commit. He’s the one who broke up with me.” Cal shot me a confused look, not knowing why I would lie to him about something like this, but he didn’t interrupt me. “He told me that I gained a few too many pounds the last few months and didn’t listen when he told me to eat better or get out more. He said he couldn’t be with someone who let herself go and that he wasn’t attracted to me anymore.”
“What a fucking ass, I’m so sorry that he said that to you Y/N. I’m going to fucking kill him,” Cal spoke through his teeth, trying to quell the anger rising in him with every word I spoke. I could tell that it was taking everything in him to not run out of the house in search of Dalton to beat him for hurting me like this. And it was the last thing I wanted.
“Cal it’s fine,” I shrugged, pulling the blanket closer to me. “It’s not like he’s wrong anyways.” I whispered under my breath instantly regretting it when I realized Calum heard me. His head snapped to me, jaw slightly open in shock at what he just heard.
“Y/N you know that everything that prick said about you was wrong right? You have to know how beautiful you are.”
A scoff escaped my lips before I could stop it. “You have to say that Cal, you’re my best friend but please don’t lie to me. I don’t deserve your pity, it’s why I didn’t want to tell you. He just confirmed what I’ve always known deep down. I’m not worth it, I’m not beautiful and I just have to accept it and move on with my life.”
It was silent after I spoke. I could see the gears turning in Cal’s head as he processed what I just said. This was exactly why I had been avoiding him since the breakup, I knew once we talked about it I would admit that I believed everything Dalton said about me. It was the worst part of the breakup, knowing that my deepest insecurities came to light and were thrown in my face like that.
Cal moved slightly on the couch, moving his hand from my knee to take the blanket out of my hands. He pulled the blanket off me and tossed it on the floor. He wrapped his one hand around mine, moving the other to my chin so I was looking into his eyes as he spoke.
“Y/N please believe me when I say you are beautiful. Inside and out. I love everything about you and I’m not just saying this as your best friend. Dalton is a dick for saying those things about your body and they are so far from the truth. I know you’ve always struggled with your body image but believe me when I say that I love your body. I love the wrinkles around your eyes when you laugh, I love that you aren’t as skinny as those instagram models, it shows that you’re real and that you take care of your body by eating. I love that you can put a whole pizza away faster than me and the guys, it’s one of my favorite memories. I love your stretch marks, they are a unique map of only your body. I love how your body feels like it was made for me. I never want you to hate your body because it is an amazing thing. Fuck Y/N can’t you see that you are perfect to me, every last inch of you. Your eyes, your hand give the best massages, fuck even your boobs are fucking perfect-”
Calum’s eyes widened as he realized he got a little carried away with his speech praising my body. I’m sure my face mirrored his. I never knew Calum felt this way, never imagine this would be his reaction when I told him the truth about the breakup. I couldn’t help the small smile that was forming on my lips. There was a new tension in the air that wasn’t there before. It was a new feeling between Cal and I, but there was something so natural about it. Deciding to cross the line, I reached out for his free hand. His eyes narrowed at my touch, trying to decipher what I was going to do next. I looked him in the eyes as I slowly pulled his hand closer to me, placing it on my side just below my breast.
“What were you saying about my boobs being perfect?”
He eyed me tentatively, trying to gauge my response to what he just said. “Y/N what are you-”
I cut him off. “Calum thank you for saying all that. You don’t know how much that means to me. I realized Dalton was a dick but it was still hard to hear. But you-you always know just want to say to make me feel better. It’s something I still have to work on and I think having you by my side will help. I think we both knew this was going to happen one day Cal. It’s always been you and me, so why can’t one day be today? So again, what were you saying about my boobs?”
My breath hitched as Cal moved his hand slowly up from my side to cup my breast.
“I said your boobs are fucking perfect, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve pictured them bouncing as you ride me.”
Now it was my turn to pick my jaw off the floor. I wasn’t expecting that comment to come from him. He chuckled as his lustful eyes met my shocked ones.
“I’m going to show you just how much I love your body.”
I woke up the next morning, rolled over and collided with a solid body. I opened my eyes and saw Calum looking down at me with a small smile on his face.
“Good morning beautiful,” he moved his head to give me a peck on the lips. “How did you sleep?”
I smiled back at him, “Good, glad last night wasn’t a dream.”
“How’re you feeling this morning?”
I snuggled closer to his chest, “I feel much better than I did yesterday. I feel like I could learn to love myself with your help.” I pressed a kiss to his neck.
“I like the sound of that. Maybe I can show you how beautiful you are again after breakfast.”

Priorities *part 2*
I am so sorry for the delay but I was on vacation and just had a very few busy days! Here is part 2 of Priorities, I am planning a part 3 for sure possibly a part 4! Please please let me know what you think!
part 1
“We came backstage and you were just gone. One text saying you needed a break? That’s all we were worth to you? Is that all I was worth to you Y/N? I thought we could be something, but you never gave me a chance. You just bailed. And now we show up after all this time and you have a kid? I can’t believe it. I just-I just need to know. Am I the dad?”
“Wait what?” I stared at him in disbelief, trying to stifle a laugh because of how serious he was.
“Don’t laugh at me Y/N I’m serious. Unless you were fucking other guys it’s obvious why you left. You got pregnant, and you got scared so you ran. I just don’t know why you wouldn’t tell me. It's not just your life that was affected.”
I took a step towards him and he didn’t pull back. I reached out and pulled his hands into mine.
“Luke, I’m not laughing at you. I can see how serious you are, but the baby isn’t mine.”
“It’s not?” I turned to see Calum, Mikey and Ashton standing between the kitchen and the front room.
“We didn’t mean to listen, but you guys were right there and there is no door…” Ash trailed off.
I sighed knowing it was finally time to tell them the truth. I gestured for them all to sit around the dining table as I grabbed the glasses Luke left by the sink. I left the boys, chose what they wanted to drink and grabbed a few snacks out of the pantry in case anyone was hungry. Just as I was about to sit down the baby started crying. I sighed looking at the boys.
“Give me a few minutes to get him up and then I’ll explain everything. I promise.”
Luke
I couldn’t believe that after all this time I was here sitting in her house. It was a nice house, but it was still weird to think of Y/N spending all her time here raising a baby. There were baby toys all over the place, a pile of clothes overflowing from the laundry room around the corner and baby bottles stacked next to the sink. As I looked around though, there were still little pieces that showed she lived here too. Her worn out vans lay just inside the door, half empty water bottles gathered on the island, blankets covering every inch of the couch. They were all things that unmistakingly said Y/N.
I never believed her excuse of needing a break from touring, she loved everything about being on the road. And selfishly I thought she enjoyed spending time with me. I don’t know when things changed between us, but one night we were drinking with the rest of the boys and I was walking her back to her room and the next morning I woke up next to her. We promised to keep it casual but after a few weeks of hooking up she started spending the nights in my room; we talked about everything during those early morning hours and it was then that I realized she was someone special. I knew that I wanted us to be more and I was planning on taking her out on the town after our New York show, but we stepped off the stage and she was gone.
I was devastated, and the boys did what they could to cheer me up but they had all sensed a change in me the months prior. So when Calum suggested we pay Y/N a visit with our week off I jumped at the chance to figure out why she really left. We were all curious as to her reason for leaving, she used to talk about nothing but being on the road and all the things she planned to do when the tour ended. And not once did she mention settling down. It was bizarre when we found out she had bought a house in a small neighborhood outside the city. During our late night talks she always said that she couldn't fall asleep without the sounds of the city right outside her window.
“So if it’s not her kid, what is going on here?” Michael broke the silence, looking around the table before settling his eyes on me. I looked up and realized all three of them were staring at me.
“What?” I mumbled, slightly uncomfortable under their gaze.
“You knew her best Luke, did she ever mention anything?” Cal asked.
“You think I wouldn’t have told you guys? I’m as shocked as all of you.”
It was silent again as we all sat with our thoughts waiting for Y/N to come back out. When she opened that door yelling about waking up a baby my heart stopped. Out of all the scenarios that ran through my head the last six months I never thought Y/N had a baby. My heart dropped to my stomach and I couldn’t believe that she would leave and not tell me about something as big as a baby. But now she’s saying it’s not hers? I’ve never been more confused and craving answers. My anxiety was through the roof, I couldn't stop bouncing my knee and chewing at my already chipped red nail polish.
“Luke you can relax,” Ashton broke the silence. “She said the baby’s not her, which means it's not yours.”
“I know,” I sighed, “It all just made sense when I thought she left because she had a baby. I just need to know the truth.”
Reader POV
“Okay it’s gonna be okay buddy.” I sighed as I was changing him. “There are some friends downstairs waiting to meet you. And I know you don’t understand what I’m saying but I feel like I am going to lose my mind if I don’t get this off my chest. I’ve run over this scenario so many times little buddy but I did not expect this when we woke up this morning. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy you get to finally meet your super cool uncles.” He laughed up at me as I tickled his stomach before I pulled his clean shirt over his head. “And ya know Luke is still just as handsome as I remember.”
I quietly made my way down the hallway to see if I could overhear the boys talking. I was curious as to what they thought the explanation was going to be. I could hear mumbling but nothing concrete. I took a deep breath as I made my way down the stairs and into the kitchen. I pulled the high chair up to the table and put the baby in it with some cut up bananas to eat. I sat down next to him and turned to the boys.
There was an awkward silence as they all stared at me waiting for an explanation. I took a second to take this all in, not believing that they were all sitting in my kitchen.
“Well boys...this is my nephew Wesley.” I ruffled my hand through his hair. “My sister gave birth to him about a year ago and then she just up and left six months ago. He had no one else to raise him so I had to come back for him. I’m the only family he has.”
All four of the boys looked from Wes back to me. I could see the surprise on their faces, Ashtons’ jaw was even hanging open. Luke was the one who spoke first.
“You never told us about your sister.”
A small frown formed on my face, “We were never close. Heather is a few years older than me and was never around when I was younger. She always fought with my mom and when she turned 16 she left home. She didn’t even come back for my mom's funeral. I never really forgave her for that, but when she reached out to me about a year ago telling me she had just given birth I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. Mostly because I missed having a family and I had always wanted to be an auntie.”
“Weren’t we family enough?” Luke interrupted me.
I glanced from him to the rest of the boys and saw the hurt etched across their faces, making my regret my choice of words.
“I didn’t mean it like that, you guys were the family I always wished for when I was younger. And even though she abandoned me just like our dad abandoned us, she was still my sister. I was so excited when I found out I was an aunt as well, Heather and I were talking again and how could I not want to be in this guy's life? I mean just look at him.” I smiled as I looked over at Wes who was still enjoying his bananas.
“Where is your sister now?” Cal asked.
I sighed, “I don’t know. Six months after she gave birth she left, just like our dad did to us and I just, I just couldn’t let him fall into the system. I’m all he has. I never wanted to leave you,” my eyes met Luke’s, “...guys or the tour, let alone without telling anyone but I knew if you guys knew about Wes you would try and convince me to bring him on the road, and I would’ve stayed because that’s all I wanted to do. But it’s not about me anymore, I have to do what is best for Wesley and he deserves to have a normal childhood. Well as normal as I can give him seeing as I’m not his mother. I’m sorry for how I left, but I’m not sorry that I left.”
It was silent when I stopped talking, I looked around the table to see all the boys processing what I had told them. I knew it was a shock finding me here raising a baby that wasn’t mine but I was glad that I finally told them the reason behind me leaving.
Wes started fussing now that he finished his snack, I turned to pick him up but Michael was already jumping out of his seat.
“Let his cool Uncles play with him Y/N,” he picked Wes up out of his highchair, tickling his stomach and making him giggle. Michael laughed too as he carried him into the living room. Calum and Ashton stood up to follow him.
“I’m gonna be his favorite ya know,” Cal winked at me as they left.
“We’re just glad you’re okay Y/N, anything we can do to help we will. For now the three of us will keep him busy while you two take some necessary time to talk.” Ashton gave a small smile to me and Luke who were left sitting at the table.
I turned to Luke who was sitting with his head in his hands. I placed my hand on his forearm causing him to look up at me. “Let’s go outside okay?”
He nodded his head, a slight smile on his lips as he took my outstretched hand and followed me as I led him out to the small patio off the kitchen. He made sure to close the door tight knowing the boys would eavesdrop if possible. I pulled him down on the small couch next to me. I had so many things I wanted to say to him but I owed him enough to start the conversation. His hand remained in mine as we sat in silence, I lightly traced the tattoos on his wrists. He hummed slightly causing me to look up and see him smiling at me.
“I miss that feeling, your fingers tracing patterns all over me. It’s like you leave a trail of fire every time you touch me.” I felt my face flush, I looked back down and began drawing circles on the back of his hands. “I’ve missed you so fucking much Y/N, I thought you left because of something I did. I know we always said we would keep it casual but fuck I haven’t been the same since you left.”
“Fuck Luke I didn’t know you felt that way. You did nothing wrong. I just couldn’t bear to say goodbye to you in person. I felt the same way about you when I left, I didn’t want to keep being casual I wanted to be yours-”
Luke pressed his lips to mine, cutting me off mid sentence. I melted into him like no time had passed. I forgot how it felt to kiss him, it was a drug I couldn’t get enough of. I moved my hands to the back of his neck and pulled him closer to me. His hands went to my waist and the next thing I knew I was sitting on his lap. I pulled back and rested my forehead against his.
“I missed you Y/N, so fucking much.”
“I missed you too Luke, a lot. But you need to know we can’t just go back to how things were. I need to put Wes first and you have the band.”
“But you just said you wanted to be mine,” he looked at me with a mixture of hope and sadness in his eyes. This was exactly why I couldn’t say goodbye in person.
“Key word being wanted. My whole life is different now Luke, I’m not the same person that I was six months ago.”
“So what are we supposed to do?”
I climbed off Luke and reached out my hand, “We go hang out with Wes so he can get to know his Uncle Luke. And then you go back on tour, I stay here and raise Wes and you visit every once in a while with the boys. It's not ideal but at least we’ll still see each other every so often. I’m sorry Luke, but it’s just how it has to be.”

Synopsis: After abruptly leaving tour for personal reasons the boys show up looking for answers.
To say I miss touring was an understatement, I miss the adrenaline rush and the long nights staying up talking once a show had finished. I miss bonding with the crew over things no one else understood and I miss the boys more than anything. A year ago I never would have anticipated leaving the tour on such short notice but then life happened.
I was never good at goodbyes and I couldn’t bear to admit that I was really leaving. So I did the only logical thing to avoid it, I left in the middle of one of their shows. I texted the boys that I wasn’t feeling well and then I just left. I couldn’t face them, to this day I never really said goodbye. I gave them a vague answer telling them I couldn’t take being on the road anymore and needed some time to myself.
These have been the longest and most exhausting six months of my life, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. My sister gave birth roughly a year ago to my beautiful nephew and then six months ago she just left. She couldn’t raise him on her own and she chose to leave him with her roommate and a note to call me; I will never forget that phone call. My heart broke for my nephew, he was innocent in all the drama that surrounded his birth. He was just a baby and he needed me. I instantly knew I had to be the one to raise him, there was no one else since my mom died a few years back and my dad was never in the picture. It wasn’t fair to me or him but we all had to play with the cards we are dealt.
I was so mad at my sister, I couldn’t understand how she could just leave her son. I knew she had been through a lot with the baby’s father but from our conversations she had been doing okay and there were no signs she would do something so extreme. I loved being an aunt more than anything in the world, but I never imagined having to step in and be a single mother at my age. If I’m being honest I was never sure I wanted to have kids at all but I always thought I would have time to make that choice.
I was broken from my thoughts by cries coming from the next room. I checked the monitor and saw he had pulled himself up and was standing in his crib yelling. I groaned pausing my show and rolling off the couch.
“I’m coming buddy.”
I looked at the clock and saw he had only gone down 45 minutes ago, meaning he was up over an hour earlier than he should be. I groaned thinking about how bad the rest of the day would be if he doesn’t get back to sleep soon. I decided to help my future self out and quickly warmed up a few ounces of milk in case I couldn’t soothe him back to sleep on my own.
Twenty minutes later and I was glad I made the bottle, he fell right back to sleep after drinking it. I sat back down on the couch with a sigh, debating if I wanted to finish my show or sleep for an hour. I settled on another episode of New Girl because I was too exhausted to even focus on anything new. I had barely hit play when someone started pounding on the door.
“Shit,” I jumped up trying to get to the door before the pounding woke the baby. Whoever was at my door, I was going to kill whoever it was as I wasn’t expecting any packages today. “For the love of god, stop knocking you’re going to wake the baby!” I lightly yelled as I yanked the door open.
I froze, my mouth still hanging open, staring at the four lanky boys on my doorstep.
“Y/N!” Michael shouted.
“We missed you,” Calum smiled at me.
“I missed you the most!” Ashton pouted.
“Baby?” Luke whispered, eyes open in shock. Heading swiveling from the other boys to me.
My brain could not register what was actually happening, that the boys were actually standing on my front porch. I stopped to take them in and see how much they changed over the past few months. Michaels hair was now platinum blonde, a color I think suited him best. He also just looked so much happier, something I knew to be credited to his relationship with Crystal. Calum looked pretty much the same, his hair was just a bit shaggier and he somehow looked tanner than before. Ashton had dyed his hair black and somehow seemed taller to me. Lastly my eyes trailed to Luke, he looked mostly the same but there was something wrong with his eyes; they weren’t filled with their usual mischief..
“Y/N did yo-did you have a baby?” Calum asked, eyes glancing behind me to the mess of baby toys strewn through the house.
“Is that why you left?” Ash looked at me with concern.
“What are you guys doing here? How did you even get my address?” I asked dodging their questions, but they all saw through me.
“Don’t ignore us Y/N, tell us what the hell happened back in New York? You were part of our family and then you were just gone?” Michael asked.
I sighed and moved aside to let them in. “Come in, but please keep it down. I don’t want to wake up the baby.”
The four of them shuffled into the house all awkwardly standing in the entryway, staring at the disaster my house was.
“Sorry for the mess, I wasn’t expecting company.” I moved around them and quickly cleared the toys off the couch, tossing them into a nearby bin. “Please sit, do you guys want anything to drink? I have water and lemonade.”
They all nodded and mumbled ‘sure.’ I knew they were all a bit shell shocked at how they found me. Not one of them anticipated me to be settled down, they all knew how much I loved being on the road.
“I’ll help you,” Luke stood up and followed me into the kitchen.
“The cups are over there,” I pointed to the cabinet next to the sink as I opened the fridge to pull out the drinks, I even had some soda I didn’t know about. I turned to find Luke staring out the window obviously deep in thought. I could tell that he had something he wanted to get off his chest.
“What is it Luke?”
He turned to me, “What do you mean?”
“I know you Luke, you clearly have something you want to say to me so…” I gestured for him to talk.
He sighed, running his hand through his hair, tugging slightly at the ends. I could tell he was having an inner conflict with himself about whether he should voice his thoughts or not. He took another deep breath before raising his eyes to meet mine.
“I just didn’t understand why you left. I was so mad at you Y/N, you left without a word, I didn’t even get a separate text. I was so prepared to come here and demand a response, but it’s pretty clear looking around why you left.” he pointed to the high chair and bibs next to the table.
“Luke I wanted to tell you, so badly but I couldn’t.”
I took a step towards him, reaching out my hand to touch his elbow but he pulled away moving to lean against the island.
“Then why didn’t you? I would’ve helped Y/N if you just told me. You didn’t have to do this alone.”
“I didn’t have a choice Luke. There was no-”
The look on Luke’s face cut me off, he looked so heartbroken. I couldn’t imagine that he would be that upset over me leaving the tour. Sure we had a few drunken hookups here and there, and I thought there was a chance for us to be more but I had to leave and we never got the chance to find out. I never thought Luke would be this upset over me. I opened my mouth to try and explain to him, but his next words stopped me.

Warnings: None just a cute meet and greet - let me know if you’d like a part 2!!
I was woken up by Sirius whining and nuzzling his nose into my cheek. I swatted at him, trying to roll over and get a few more minutes of sleep. But much to my displeasure, I found that Sirius was sitting on top of me, preventing me from going back to sleep. I groaned, trying to push my dog off of you. He wasn’t budging.
“”Come on Sirius, you want breakfast?” his ears perked up at the mention of food. “Well you gotta let me get up buddy. Come up get up!” I had to add excitement to my voice as I again tried to push him off. Thankfully it worked and he bounded off the bed and downstairs to wait by his bowl.
I shook my head and couldn't help but laugh at him. He always brought a smile to my face even when he woke me up at 7 am on a Saturday. I put some food in his dish as I went over to my fridge to get some coffee and a protein shake out. I pulled out the coffee only to discover it was nearly empty, there wasn’t even enough for a glass. I cursed my past self for failing to buy more the last time I went to the store.
“Guess I’m working out to wake up today Siri,” I turned to the dog who had just finished eating. I walked over to the back door and opened it for him to go out for the morning. “I’ll get you in after I workout bud. Then we can share some pancakes and work on our new puzzle.” By the time I had finished talking he had already gone to the bathroom and was playing with his favorite rope toy.
“I don’t know why I talk to you like you can really understand me.”
I left the door open but pulled the screen shut to let some fresh air flow through the house as I went upstairs to change for my workout. Any other Saturday I would sit outside on my deck with some coffee mixed with a protein shake so that I was fully awake when I worked out. And my workout would normally include walking Sirius at the local park or around the neighborhood. Without my morning coffee however I opted for a lighter day and was scrolling through Youtube on my tv looking for a cardio workout. I still strongly believed it was too early for this but knew if I went back to bed I would waste the whole day doing nothing and I hated to do that.
Picking an 80’s inspired workout , I put the remote down and followed the instructor on my screen. Thirty minutes later and the sweat was pouring down my back and I was really in the zone this morning. Once the video ended I decided to get my dumbbells out and throw a small arm workout in as well. Thirty minutes later and I couldn’t push myself anymore. I put my equipment away, turned the tv off and went into the kitchen to get some water. I looked out the window as I was filling my glass and was surprised to see the sky was darker than it had been when I let Sirius out over an hour ago.
“Shit,” I whispered to myself not realizing how long it had been since I let him out. It wasn’t out of the ordinary but now that I was thinking about it I hadn’t heard him barking or playing like I usually did. I tried to squash the panic that was filling my body as I opened the back door to get him inside before the rain started.
“Sirius! Sirius come here boy!” my eyes scanned the yard as I yelled for him. I saw the rope toy he was playing with earlier but he was nowhere near it. The panic was overflowing now as I didn’t see him anywhere in my backyard. There were no bushes he could hide in so that only meant one thing. He had gotten out, one more scan of the yard confirmed my worst fear, the small side gate was open.
Without thinking I took off running through the house and out of the front door. I had no idea how long he had been gone and I couldn’t help but think the worst. Sirius was all I had since I moved out on my own and I couldn’t imagine what I would do if I lost him.
“Sirius! Sirius where are you?” I yelled as I raced down the street. I took off in the direction we walked everyday and went around yelling for about ten minutes to no avail.
Of course the day my dog decided to run away was the day the block was vacant. Normally on a Saturday morning my neighbors were out walking their kids and dogs but the threat of the impending storm had them all inside. I stopped in the middle of the street as the first raindrops fell from the sky.
That was the final straw. Just as the sky opened up the tears began to fall down my face. I sighed defeated, not knowing what else to do. The best course of action I could think of was to go home and alert all your friends and family that he got out and pray that he was found by a good person who turns him in and they would read his chip and bring him home. I would never be letting him out without his collar on again.
The fact that the sky had opened up didn’t even phase me as I turned the corner and was back on my street. I was too distressed worrying over Sirius and where he could be in this bad weather. I prayed that he found shelter and was staying out of the storm.
I was only a few houses away when I heard a familiar bark. I knew it was Sirius. I stopped where I was and listened for him to bark again. He did and I heard it clearer this time. I turned towards the house in front of me, I had no idea who the owner was, only that they had recently moved to the neighborhood. I took a few steps closer to the house but didn’t see anyone from the window. Sirius barked again, drawing my attention to the backyard. I ran around the house and saw Sirius barking at a boy who was trying to get him in his house. I would have laughed at the scene if I wasn’t so relieved to find my dog.
The boy was trying to get Sirius to come out from under a large tree and go inside his house to get out of the rain. But being the stubborn dog that I knew him to be he wasn’t going to budge. He loved being out in the rain and would usually roll around in the mud, but today he was enjoying this new game he was playing.
“Sirius!” I yelled stepping into the boys yard. At the sound of my voice, both of their heads turned to stare at me. Sirius with a lopsided grin on his face and the boy looking confused.
“Are you his owner?” he yelled to you over the storm.
“Yea, he got out this morning and I’ve been running around looking for him.” I spoke as I moved closer to the boy, ducking under the small roof he had over his back porch to get out of the rain.
“He’s been back here for a while, he was barking at a squirrel that he chased up the tree. I’ve been trying to get him to come inside since it started raining but he will not leave that spot.”
“Unfortunately he loves the rain,” as the words left my mouth a large clap of thunder sounded causing Sirius to sprint across the yard to you. “But he is terrified of thunder.”
“Me too buddy,” the boy said as he squatted down to pet Sirius. “What did you say his name was?”
“Sirius. And yes I did name him after Sirius Black, he was my favorite character from Harry Potter and little Sirius here was the only black lab in his litter. It was just meant to be.”
A smile grew on the boy's face as I spoke. “That’s a great name for such a good boy,” his voice changed as he scratched behind Sirius’ ears. As he was petting him, another clap of thunder sounded and Sirius bounded through the open door into the strangers house to escape the storm.
“Oh my god I am so sorry about him. Sirius get back out here!” I turned to the boy, feeling completely embarrassed at the lack of training my dog showed. “Let me just get him back out here and we will be out of your way.”
“No, don't worry about it. He’s a big softy and to be fair I’ve been trying to get him inside the last ten minutes. You know what, why don’t you come inside as well and wait the storm out. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with you two walking home in this downpour.”
As he spoke I noticed the rain had begun falling much harder, I could barely see the tree that Sirius had previously been sitting under. I looked to the boy that I had never met before today and while his offer was tempting, there was always the chance he turned out to be a serial killer.
“I promise I’m not a serial killer, just new to the neighborhood and trying to be friendly.” He spoke as if reading my thoughts.
“I guess a few minutes wouldn’t hurt. I’m Y/N by the way.”
“Ashton, it’s nice to meet you and Sirius.”
The two of you headed inside and I looked around to see Sirius had made himself as home on Ashton’s couch.
“Sirius get down!”
“It’s okay really, my old roommate used to have a dog and that was his spot as well. No worries really.” Ashton smiled while glancing over at me.
We stood in silence for a minute or two, not really knowing what to say. I took the time to look around the house and found it was set up differently than mine. I always just assumed the houses were all laid out the same. His kitchen and dining room were in the front of the house, with his living room and stairs placed at the back. He had a few decorations hanging around and a nice drum set in the corner. I also glanced over at the boy whose house Sirius and I had invaded. He was gorgeous, he had dark brown hair that was slightly lighter at the ends and gorgeous hazel eyes. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t noticed that someone this attractive had moved in down the street from me.
“Are you cold?” Ashton’s voice broke through the silence.
“What?” I asked him, still taking in his place.
“I just asked if you were cold. You were out in the rain and you’re shivering.”
I looked down and realized I was still in my sports bra and I was indeed shivering from being out in the rain.
“I guess I am yeah. Honestly I didn’t even realize how cold I was until you mentioned it. I am just so relieved that Sirius is safe.”
“Here you can use this,” he handed me a sweatshirt from a laundry basket that was sitting next to him. “And if you want I can find you a pair of my old sweatpants and can throw your leggings in the wash?”
“Are you sure? I don’t want to impose…”
He chuckled, “Seeing as your dog is already sound asleep on my couch don’t worry about it. Plus I’m just being neighborly.” He smirked at you with a glint in his eyes.
“Well thank you, I appreciate it Ashton,” I smiled back at him as I went to his bathroom to change.
When I came back out I smelled popcorn and saw Ashton was sitting on the couch next to Sirius with a large bowl of popcorn on the table in front of him. He looked up when I walked in the room, scooted over on the couch and patted the spot next to him inviting you to sit.
“I figured we could watch a movie while the storm passed. I hope you like popcorn.”
“Only if it is extra butter.” I sat next to him and popped a piece in my mouth. “Perfect.” I grinned at him. “What movie are you thinking?”
“Well in honor of Sirius over here, without whom I’d be spending this storm alone, I thought we could watch Prisoner of Azkaban. I even have it pulled up already.” he looked away from me with a slight blush on his cheeks.
I couldn’t help but stare at this gorgeous man who was going something that was so meaningful without even knowing it. Hell the last guy I dated never even bothered to watch any of the movies I liked. Woah, I stopped myself. I barely knew Ashton and I was already comparing him to my past boyfriends. I just felt so comfortable with him and could tell Sirius did too.
“Wait, did you buy the movie?” I asked as I glanced up at the screen and saw that it said purchase complete.
His cheeks reddened, “I just wanted to make sure we watched something you would like.”
“Why are you being so nice to me?”
His eyes shot up and met mine, I could tell that my question through him off guard. I bit my lip as I waited for him to answer, all the while wishing I hadn’t asked the question.
“I honestly don’t know. I just felt instantly comfortable with you and wanted you to feel the same way with me. I know that sounds creepy but I promise I’m just a normal guy and want to be friends with my neighbor.”
I pursed my lips as I took in his answer. “Good enough for me.” I sat back on the couch and made myself comfortable. I placed my legs over his, placing the bowl of popcorn in my lap. Ashton smiled, and sunk back next to me.
“I’m a Hufflepuff by the way,” he grinned as he played the movie.
“Me too.”
I turned my attention to the movie as the opening music began playing over the Warner Brothers logo. I never would have imagined my day going like this when Sirius woke me up at 7am, but I am so glad it did. I snuck a glance at Ashton and smiled, knowing that he was going to be in my life for a long time.
