i actually think my favorite part of the song tho is after a breathless rambly, compacted string of lyrics when she delivers "all you said was hi" because it's that quintessential swiftian magic trick where a quiet moment, a simple greeting calls forth a deluge of emotion. the feeling of seeing someone you thought you'd lost again, all they have to say is one word and it all comes rushing back. even the breathy, shaky way she delivers hi is just soooo loaded, the little pause after to let the moment exhale. that way she always manages to spotlight the smallest moments in life, with no gravitas, that bear the weight of so much yearning, distill it down lyrically to such a simple interaction. but god you feel it all hit you like a truck.

yeah! I really love her cadence on this song, especially compared to the metered pop rhythm of late and the slurred drawn out cadence prior. it's fun to have her return to a cadence that's so bouncy and fun and heel tapping, how she sings in conversation with the instrumental at times. really hope she enjoys it as much as we do and wants to pursue more of this style again.

LMAOOO if you insist! I did listen to it, albeit not until later yesterday because i don't really gaf about her soundtrack work. i don't consider it canonical to her oeuvre. Also tbh it's never impressed me before, and i wasn't particularly impressed by this either. I do love the return to a more hokey country sound (affectionate) with a bit of Randy Newman cosplay on Jack's part. It's a sound that suits her! Despite this being a song for a cgi toy cowgirl, the double self reflection of her returning to a country sound with the lyrics "i knew you" lol. cute! i think as a whole song, it's not for me. feels a bit clunky and cluttered, has the hallmarks of a soundtrack song where certain "plots" are shoehorned into lyrics make it movie applicable to the movie character plot. which is quite literally the assignment so i don't begrudge it for that, nor do i think she did a bad job of executing that. but it's not something i like to listen to of my own free will unless it's done extremely well (see Mother Mary soundtrack).

however, there are a few glimmers of really nice melody and lyricism that hit a warm spot in my chest, tickle my brain. the part "what i thought would be the last time i saw my friend" up to "all you said was hi" both have melodic climbs and finishing notes/beats/lyrics that land warmly for me. when she slows down the lyrics from the melody incongruously with "man it's been a whiiiile" is also very delicious. those really tasty morsels are a glimmer of what grown up country/adult contemporary taylor could be and it's very promising! It was promising when we heard the same backyard yarn spinning orchestration and conversational cadence in Betty. I had hoped she would explore that back then and i still do love that sound from her. something her and jack seem to really gel with together, a bit of nashville country blended with jersey springsteen americana. and well...we know how much peer recognition (or lack thereof) can be the wind in her sails. if this finally nabs her the much sought after white whale oscar nomination, that could be encouragement enough to pursue more of this sound in her mind i'd wager. if for nothing but my own selfish reasons, i'm rooting for her!

#i don't hate it! just not for me and i haven't had a connection to toy story since the aptly timed third installment #that absolutely wrecked every college aged millennial who grew up on it so #to me it's just more disney rehashed IP blight in an otherwise thriving original movie landscape #which has nothing to do with her just like i'm neutral-> hostile towards toy story from that angle so her song isn't compelling to me #everyone go see backrooms instead #and i don't mean the oscar thing as a dig! she really wants it and i hope she gets it. pixar is a safe bet for at least a nom so shes smart
