semi-hiatus

Hey guys! I haven’t been on much but I promise it’s for good reason. School has become almost overbearing and I can’t always find the will to do anything but rest when I get home. It’s also build season for my robotics team and we have five more weeks until competition. With that being said I haven’t been home much. Thank you all for being patient with me, I’ll be answering some threads when I can.

He gave a slight nod, taking in what she said to him. Edie did make a good point, though. They didn’t get a choice in being made, just like humans. Grant shifted where he was sitting, it’d be better to be honest than lie. Besides, he was in good company.

“I used to hate synths. I still do, to a degree. But, I’ve been accused of being one, and after hearing what you said… I guess I feel empathy for them now. A little.” He said all of this with the mindset of still being a human, still blind and unaware of being a synth. “Is it hard running with a group that people aren’t… I guess, on board with?”

⇻ ♞ ― Her attitude lightened once again. She once hated synths too, more than anyone should know. Before the Railroad freed her she had to watch the Institute play 'maker’. The thought made her shift in her seat. It’s more unsettling up close. ｢ ❝ Let me guess, paranoid city? I have a merchant that won’t sell to me because I so much as joked about it. ❞ ｣

｢ ❝ Sometimes. I don’t get too close to anyone, too much of a mess when ya’ don’t know where they stand. ❞ ｣ Edie messed with a single ring on her middle finger. ｢ ❝ Guess I just got lucky with you, you’re not exactly the judgmental type. It’s nice to actually sit down and just talk to someone for a change. ❞ ｣

charon watched, in silence, from the corner. ahzrukhal’s greeting smile towards edith was hideous, even for a ghoul — the teeth were repulsively cracked and discoloured, the gums were visibly rotting, and the mouth seemed to stretch a little too wide for the smile to be considered genuine. he set down the glass he’d been wiping and leaned one elbow against the edge of the bartop.

“ who, charon? ” the bartender’s rattling laugh was as unpleasant as his smile. “ oh, you don’t want to talk to him. come, sit, have a drink. ”

⇻ ♞ ― ｢ ❝ I don’t drink. ❞ ｣ She came for one thing and his decrepit smile wasn’t going to sway her. Her voice sounded more confident, almost angry. But she took a seat on one of stools and rested her hands atop the counter regardless, in hopes she could gain something out of the exchange.

｢ ❝ Why isn’t he allowed to talk anyway? ❞ ｣

Grant took a seat among the rest of the rubble, pausing when she said the word ‘synth’. It shouldn’t have caught him off guard, but somehow he still couldn’t help nearly flinching. He mulled over what she said several times in his head before even trying to speak up again.

“You help synths…” He murmured, attempting to raise his voice to an audible register. “I uh… I’m just wandering around. I never really know where to go.” Grant fell silent for a moment, unsure of what all he could say. He opted to simply ask more questions, hopefully none that were prying.

“… Why do you all want to help synths?”

⇻ ♞ ― ｢ ❝ I’m sure you’ll find your place someday! We all do eventually. ❞ ｣ She hummed and pulled her legs up to criss cross them on her seat.

｢ ❝ Well they didn’t ask to be made. Some of ‘em even bleed like the rest of us. So close to being human, I can see why it’s so unsettling, but why punish ‘em? ❞ ｣ She noticed how uneasy he had gotten, maybe he was afraid of them like everyone else. The thought caused Edie’s cheery expression to vanish.

｢ ❝ You’re not one of those synth hatin’ loons are ya’? I stay away from the cities as often as I can for a reason. ❞ ｣

“ he does not like it when i am… distracted. ” he’d been the victim of a tongue-lashing — and a beating — too many times over letting himself get roped into conversations with the patrons of the bar. what do i have you for, charon? to watch the fucking bar, not to gab with my customers. i bought a guard, not a lazy piece of shit. if i catch you talking without my permission again, you’ll regret it, got me? “ if you want a drink, talk to him. if you want a conversation, there are plenty of people in this bar. find someone else. ”

⇻ ♞ ― The girl puffed her cheeks. Now she was just determined. He seemed like he had an interesting story, more than the others and she had already mustered up enough guts for him and she wasn’t about to do it again. She abruptly turned on her heels and timidly marched over to the man at the bar. She cleared her throat to gain his attention. It took her just a few moments to gather the courage to ask.

She pointed to the guard.

｢ ❝ What... uh. What would it take to talk to him? ❞ ｣

“Edie or Anne, I’ll remember that.” He spoke somewhat quietly. For a moment, his thoughts went through a list of people he used to know. It was a weird habit, but he always found it amusing if he met someone with the same name of old acquaintances.

“I’ll remember to bring armor if I ever do.” Grant said, managing to laugh a little. His posture became a little more relaxed, not so on edge as he typically appeared. “So, what do you do all the way out here? If you don’t mind me asking.”

⇻ ♞ ― She snickered in response and approached one of the old pews. Edie dusted off a place to sit and plopped down in the middle.｢ ❝ We help synths, new and old. Simple as that. ❞ ｣ She spoke so proudly of the team, her voice projecting a little louder than usual when she had the chance to talk about it. Though, she refused to give too much away.

｢ ❝ People can be a bit rude about it sometimes, but we get through it... What about you? What are ya’ doin’ in a place like this? ❞ ｣ She held her tongue, but she didn’t see anything of value around except for Diamond City, even then it wasn’t that grand in her eyes.

There was a slight tilt to his head as he listened. Something about the ‘Railroad’ rung a bell with him somehow, it took him a second before realizing just exactly what it was. Grant wasn’t in any place to really say anything good or bad about it, so his attention remained on the stranger in front of him.

“As long as you don’t mind, it’d be nice to stay here. And… Company would nice. Feels like talking to people has become a bit of a rarity.” He paused for a moment, looking down to his hands before extending one out to her. “I’m Grant, by the way.”

⇻ ♞ ― She offered him a warm, weak grin and took his hand. Instead of the normal shake she just held it there for a moment as she introduced herself.｢ ❝ Edith. Please call me Edie. Or Anne. Anything but Edith. ❞ ｣ She didn’t particularly enjoy that name, to her it sounded like it belonged to an old lady.

The girl let go of his hand after giving it just a small shake and let her arm fall back to her side carelessly.

｢ ❝ Well, ya’ still can but... Probably not without gettin’ shot at. ❞ ｣

charon didn’t fail to notice the woman’s hesitant approach. from this vantage point in the corner, nothing that went on in underworld escaped his notice: if anyone so much as twitched their hand, he took note of it, to say nothing of a woman — a human, no less — getting up and approaching him. his head didn’t move, but his eyes swivelled down to stare. she looked remarkably small, even by his standards; he didn’t intend to reach out and actually touch her, but if he did, he had a feeling his hand would be able to wrap around her entire waist.

“ —if you need something, talk to ahzrukhal. ”

⇻ ♞ ― Talk to someone else? This puzzled the woman. She asked him if he needed someone to talk to not... however you say that name. Edith attempted to say it, several times. Eventually she just pointed at the bartender and tilted her head as if to ask if that was the guy. Her expression became almost restless. She didn’t want to talk to everybody in the whole damn bar. She would’ve asked if he was threatening him but by the looks of the guy he could definitely handle himself.

⇻ ♞ ― She stared at the ghoul for a solid five minutes before fully forming her thoughts. He seemed brash. Edith was intimidated by him which made her more hushed than usual, but he did seem lonely regardless of his menacing look and the way he leered over the place. She reluctantly scooted closer to the wall he leaned against. He looked so serious, like he could break the poor thing in half and she knew that, but her better judgement was telling her that it was the right thing to do. Though sometimes it was most definitely wrong.

She spoke lowly with a stutter.
