s9 ep10 as an exploration of morty's trauma is just so fucking good and perfect and needed and i love this fucking show

it's tied the themes of the other s9 episodes in so fucking good i can't put it into eloquent structure as the thoughts come to me so i've highlighted those ideas in blue

a show built on such an episodic premise - this nature emphasised again and again even by it's own characters (the repeated rick stumbling into morty's room drunk rambling about their next adventure scene. side note id be so interested to compare the particular episodes where that scene is used) - playing with the idea of what lasting effect the episodic nature can have on all of the characters - rick in ep 1 when he mentions in exasperation the indefinite number of seasons r&m has been greenlit for - is just so fucking good and kind of an unexplored idea

rick simultaneously being the smartest man in the everythingverse and him being mentally well is legitimately impossible - there has to be one or the other. we SEE rick realising this and struggling with this in previous episodes (s9 ep2? i think? the one where rick deletes his memory to go on camping trips with his secret buddies). we SEE the impact it's had on morty and the rest of his family - i wasn't super attentive when i watched the episode about empathy (8? 9?) but the sanchez family's lack of empathy and care for what's going on around them is literally the reason anything happens in this episode so i'm assuming there's relevance.

the smith family being happy (somewhat. i'm summing up their unhealthy attachment to morty to the fact that he died) in a universe where they cut off rick, rick becoming a better person and sobering up in a universe where he can't live with his family/access to portal travel. is this big foreshadowing for an ending? potentially

also also the funeral hopping montage in most scenes rick is either not shown or visibly drunk/drinking/not well 😭😭😭 the implication that he'd turn even more intensely to drinking if morty actually died - the ep about rick's drinking

something something morty using portal travel and becoming the one to abruptly enter and intentionally destroy an entire family when that's the reason rick is why he is in the first place. something something cycle of abuse. trauma cycle... because guess where it ends for morty!!! - more trauma!! more reason to be disconnected from it all!

morty not being phased (actually if i recall correctly he's lowkey happy about it) by the other rick's behaviour after he becomes drunk again and pushes away his wife and loses all sense of empathy bc that's what his rick is like all the time. that's so expected and normal to him

also, an idea i don't have thoughts on now but will make another post about if it hits me - the title of the episode. field of dreams? it's possibly a reference to something like every other episode title is (unless it isn't in which case that's only even more significant) but how crazy to not have the "rick" or "mort" reference in there at all like other eps. ts gets real guys

i think (complete speculation let me clarify) we've entered the rick and morty era where justin "the idiot" roiland's writing has fully phased out and we're getting pure straight genius from a team of people that no longer have to worry about writing in another way for him to blabber in the same shitty whiney voice. it's really showing in how every single ep this season was a banger

season 9, in my passionate opinion, has been the best season in the whole series thus far and it's made me SO incredibly excited for what's to come

a lost journal entry from kaz’s da where he documents all of baby kaz’s little quirks but his favorite is that kaz first learns to love the world through touch; he relishes in the softness of blankets and flower petals and the fur of the barn cat, the scruff of his da’s beard and the rough patterns of the tree trunks surrounding the farmhouse, he digs his fingernails into mashed potatoes and egg yolk and frosted cake and laughs wildly at the bizarreness of it.

it’s funny, whenever baby kaz encounters something new, his first instinct is to reach for it with an open palm and bask in the feeling. his da and jordie have made a game out of finding the weirdest new sensations for him to judge: a cold glass of water, a kiss from the cat, bubbly foam, bread dough, a bowl of pomegranate seeds, an earthworm freshly plucked from the ground, the sinewy guts of a pumpkin.

he notices that kaz especially loves his and jordie’s hands—there’s a contrast between his own large, callused fingers and jordie’s smooth, lanky ones (save for a few scrapes and scars from climbing in places he probably shouldn’t have been), and it melts his heart whenever kaz holds onto that skin to skin contact and doesn’t let go.

it fills him with so much joy he decides that kaz’s touch must be magic, and he can’t wait to watch him fill up other people’s worlds with it as he gets older.

forever mourning the concept of an animated six of crows tv show with the art style, attention to character, and atmosphere that arcane season 1 had. imagine the under-city as ketterdam, the kiramman’s mansion as the van eck mansion, stillwater prison as hellgate. not to mention the endless possibilities for accurate character design; inej’s wraith-like movements (could be similar to jinx?), kaz’s facial scars, wylan’s tailoring as kuwei, jes and nina’s powers?? the possibilities would have been endless

Sometimes Robby stays up late on his couch with the TV on real low, pretending his Bubbe is still asleep down the hall.
