taking the kid to the doctor for the first time since heâs left prison. when you arrive at the hospital complex with its imposing exterior, you sense something shifting, like tectonic plates beneath your feet. you look at the kid, but his expression is vacant, as though heâs retreated back inside himself. he doesnât respond when you say his name. youâre not sure what to make of it. he seems to shift constantly, and the moment you think youâve found sure footing with him, the floor tilts beneath you. both of your footsteps echo on the white tile as you follow the signs to the physicianâs office. the kid follows you, his gaze fixed straight ahead and his shoulders sloping at an odd angle. you pick a corner of the waiting room thatâs mostly empty and tell him to sit down while you get him checked in. he stares at the seat for a long moment and then sits, hunching his shoulders and seeming to stare into empty space. the receptionist watches him out of the corner of her eye as she hands you a new patient questionnaire with forty questions you canât possibly answer. you take a seat next to the kid and sigh, marking off âunknownâ in response to just about everything. when youâre finished, you glance at the kid. there is a strange energy radiating from him, like a shift of pressure in the air before a storm. youâre not sure what it means, but you think itâs safe to assume that he doesnât like being here. âHenry, listen to me,â you say quietly. âI promise this wonât take that long. we just have to talk to the doctor and get your blood drawn and then we can go home. okay?â the kid blinks as he seems to process new information. he tilts his head to look at you from the periphery of his vision. âIâm not staying here?â he finally asks. a tight feeling settles in your chest, and you want to slap yourself for being so stupid. you should have realized what this place would seem like, with its maze of windowless hallways filled with fluorescent lighting and sterile grey bureaucracy. you wish that he would let you take his hand. âno, of course not,â you say. "youâre staying with me as long as you want to.â the kid doesnât respond. he is so still that the receptionist is becoming unnerved. but you see something shifting behind his eyes, and he becomes present again. the pressure in the air changes, as though a weight has been lifted.

Look, my dad was fucked up, but not like that. How was he fucked up? He, uh, thought he heard the voice of God in the woods. He used to drag me out there in the dead of night, middle of winter. March me around hoping Iâd hear it too. Did you?
Headcanons: Music
Willard: He has a lovely, deep singing voice, but youâll only ever hear it while heâs at church or alone in the car listening to Johnny Cash on the radio and singing along. When his wife sings, he prefers to listen.
Merkel: He had a grandmother who would give piano lessons out of her living room. She taught him to read sheet music. As a teen, he taught himself electric guitar and bass and was the best player in a shitty punk band with his friends.
Mickey: He likes to claim that his body is his instrument right before letting rip a particularly musical fart or attempting to burp the opening to âDown With The Sickness.â
Axel: He always wanted to play drums, but his parents wouldnât let him, so he picked up the guitar instead with dreams of learning to shred. He never quite mastered it, but itâs still around here somewhere. He definitely calls it his âaxe.â
The Kid: He feels drawn to pianos for reasons he canât explain. When his fingers connect with the keys, his hands begin to move of their own accord. He remembers entire songs, but only while playing. Once the melody is finished, heâs lost again.
Roman: He pays someone else to play music for him. Somewhere in the attic, there is a long abandoned violin that his mother once insisted he had to learn to play in order to be cultured, but its neck is snapped in two.
Castle Rock 1x09 » Henry
Roman hates it when his girl gets migraines. Everyone who works for him dreads it as well, because he'll slip outside the bedroom and hiss into the phone that heads are going to fucking roll if they haven't found a cure for migraines by tomorrow morning. He can't stand to see her in pain, especially a kind he can't just take away. He tries to use his mind powers to tell her she doesn't have one, but it only makes her confused, unable to identify the source of her discomfort and still feeling it just as acutely as before. He's learned to take the day off work and tuck her into bed, rubbing her shoulders with his strong hands to ease some of the tension. He tries not to pace in agitation, but the feeling of helplessness makes him feel like a caged animal. He watches her like a hawk, ready to spring into action if she needs anything at all. But what she really needs is him. She pats the bed beside her and lays her head in his lap when he sits down, forcing him to be still or risk jarring her. He traces the apple of her cheek with his fingertips. "I'm gonna help you," he says. She nuzzles into his touch and whimpers softly, letting him know it's okay. "Go to sleep, sweet angel," he says. As blood drips from his nose, she finally slips into oblivion.

âYou lied to meâ + Roman
"Sin of Omission"
Warnings: blood
Roman had been silent for what seemed like an eternity. You weren't sure how he would react to the news, but you had expected words, at least. He was laying beside you, his naked chest still glistening with sweat from the exertion of your love-making, which was always something short of feral. You had bite marks on your breasts where he had sunk his sharp canines into your flesh. He never drank from you, but sometimes in his passion he wanted to taste your blood on his lips. You didn't mind. It felt intimate, like he knew you more completely than any man who came before him. And it made your heart race to know that he could kill youâthat part of him longed to do exactly that, but he fought against his nature, like Jacob wrestling with God, and he won every time.
"You lied to me," he finally said, his tone grave and formal. He splayed his large hand over the small bump on your stomach that you couldn't hide anymore.
"I never lied," you said quietly. "I just... didn't tell you."
"Why?" he asked. You could hear something meek in his voice, as though your confession had suddenly overpowered him, and he now waited for a killing blow. You laid your hand on top of his, feeling the cool band of the wedding ring on his finger. He was as much yours as you were his.
"I didn't want you to worry," you said, stroking his hand with the soft pad of your thumb. "Not until I was sure I wouldn't lose it."
Roman's fingers pressed into your skin, as though he was trying to grasp at the life that blossomed within you. "I could have hurt you," he whispered.
You turned toward him and pushed an unruly lock of hair out of his face. His green eyes were luminous in the dark, and filled with doubt. You cupped his cheek in your hand and murmured against his lips before you kissed him.
"I know you would never hurt me."
