had a really busy day today and i didn’t want to write but i set a stopwatch up and told myself i would write for 20 minutes (or at least sit with the doc open for that long) and i ended up spending 45 minutes writing, which is not that long but it’s longer than i otherwise would’ve spent writing (0 minutes) SO: success!! im very happy with this :)

Evgeni is like the English name Eugene. That's the English equivalent. So where in English a person with that name might be called "Gene", in Russian male diminutives (nicknames) almost always end in "a" (or "ya".. Misha, Sasha, Kolya, Vanya, etc) but in hockey they give more nicknames like "something-o", "something-y", "something-er" or "something-s", so Gena "Zhenya" (it sounds to English-speakers more like "Gina" ("Jean-a") because they don't really have the Russian "zh" sound) which is how Malkin usually refers to himself, became "Geno". His hockey buddies in America just took his name and anglicized it and made it hockey.

He could've just as easily become "Malky" or "Malks".. but I guess hockey guys kept (mis)hearing him say his name was "Gena" and just turned it into a more male/hockey name. So "Geno" was born. (I don't think he actually likes it. It's noticeable he never calls himself "Geno" when introducing himself. He always says his name is "Zhenya".. and English-speaking people always mis-hear it as "Gena" and just ignore it and keep calling him "Geno".)

Sidney Crosby got kind of lucky with his name I think. It's hard to hockey-ify since both his first and last names already end in "y". (And hockey variations of "Sid" just sound bad.. "Sidder", "Siddo", "Sidder".. none of those are good.) So he's always just Sid. Or (rarely) "Croz".

ALSO! in russian, they have a very strict syllable stress system. every russian word has exactly one (1) stressed syllable (and if you ever come across a russian word with more than one stressed syllable, that is the fastest way to know it’s a borrow word!) and the stress of the syllables actually changes how letters are pronounced. russian cyrillic also contains equivalent ‘a’ (pronounced ‘ah’) and ‘o’ (pronounced ‘oh’) letters within the alphabet, and ‘o’ in particular is very affected by the stress of syllables. an ‘o’ in a stressed syllable sounds nearly identical to english ‘o’s, but in an unstressed syllable, it approaches more of an ‘ah’ sound.

ex: хорошо -> kharasho -> khar-ah-SHO

actually, the closer an ‘o’ is in a word to the stressed syllable, the closer it gets to an ‘ah’ sound!

SO: Geno. definitely not a native russian word/name, and it carries almost equal stress on both syllables (gene-o). therefore, because the ‘o’ is not the singular stress, russian stressing indicates that the ‘o’ at the end should not be pronounced as ‘oh’ but approach the ‘ah’ sound. which is (at least part of) the reason why i think geno tends to pronounce his name as gene-ah
