that being said I'm not actually always opposed to conflict free fluff I am just opposed to the characters having their claws filed down for it. you can stick them in a coffee shop au it should just still feel like you sat the two worst most insane people on earth in a starbucks

I think we fail to talk about how post-reveal, Suzaku is objectively the one absolutely obsessed with lelouch. While lelouch is focused on his battle against imperialism, suzaku dwells on the betrayal and anger he has with lelouch. He is permanently thinking about whether or not lelouch regained his memories. Every battle he is always seeking zero, every event he is always seeking zero, even political talk that doesn't concert zero he still brings up zero. His very being is permanently fixated on him. Obsessed with the difference between S1 and S2 Suzaku. Like in the show he's got a very different demeanour but looks almost the same but in my hc he's almost a completely different person. He spent a year away from Japan, away from school, fighting foreign wars and spending time with Britannian elites. He's not any taller, but he's broader. He was fit before, but he's noticeably more well muscled now. He has so many new scars - mostly from battle, but some from attempts on his life, including one on his neck from Bradley's idea of a warm welcome into the Knights of the Round. He's more tan, having drilled many a battalion in European sun. He even sounds different. He sounds like a Britannian noble now, having consciously made an effort to erase any trace of his Japanese accent. He's mastered the art of shutting himself down, switching off his natural empathy to do what needs to be done.

His friends at Ashford recognise him, of course they do, but they also don't. He doesn't smile and laugh with them anymore, he doesn't have that tenderness about him that he had before he left. When he does smile it feels hollow, a mask he wears to hide the coldness inside him. He's not Suzaku anymore; Suzaku died with Euphy and this is a weapon of Britannia's violence wearing Suzaku's face. He sees it too. No one wants to be alone with him, very few people look him in the eye. The ones who used to bully him for his heritage avoid him like the plague, no one dares call him Eleven to his face anymore. Even his teachers, who once derided and criticised him for his poor performance in class won't keep him behind or make comments about his ugly English writing. It's not even a relief, not when his maths teacher speaks to him like he'll pull a knife on him if he tells him he failed a test, and his English teacher, who once berated him for not speaking properly now addresses him with the kind of formality usually reserved for lords and landed gentry.

And Lelouch has to pretend that he doesn't notice all this. That he doesn't know why this monster wearing his beloved friend's face is here, dripping with the blood of thousands of Britannia's enemies. That it's his fault.
