So as we all know, Tokyo Ghoul :re is wrapping up in a couple of weeks. It’s unknown whether Ishida will move forward with a third manga series. Regardless, I want to take a moment to reflect on what it has meant for me to write as Kaneki Ken/Sasaki Haise, a character I have grown fond of for a very long time.
It was the Summer of 2014, right after I finished my first major semester of graduate school. In between work, other real life obligations, and watching the World Cup at the time, I was in need of watching new Anime during my precious spare time. When I heard about Tokyo Ghoul, my interest sparked in the snap of a finger. For those who know me very well, I have an for horror/macabre-esque type manga/anime. After watching the first episode, I was instantly hooked. While waiting for the next episode every week during season one, I would binge read the manga as I tried to catch up. After season one of the Anime ended, I decided to give Kaneki a shot on Aniroleplay in September of the same year as I just resumed graduate studies. The following month that was when :re was released It was at a time when the series’ recongition was at its peak, meeting people who played characters from the series, a lot who I have befriended. Unfortunately, with the passing of time, most of those of friends who I have had the pleasure of writing with had moved on to pursue other interests whether it was for roleplay or for real life.
Thankfully, I have had success writing as Kaneki/Haise on Aniroleplay. However, the site failed to serve itself as a stable writing platform. In the Fall of 2015, one of my best friends and a consummate writer in his own respect, Tony ( @gris-eraflure ), told me all about tumblr roleplay. The idea sparked me and I decided to give a shot. It was a slow start at first, not being familiar with how writing on a non-traditional roleplaying platform. But giving it a fair chance, I soon met other writers in the Tokyo Ghoul RPC, as well as from other fandoms who had their own unique TG verses. The amount of ideas we shared with each other through threads and prompts was astounding. I don’t regret making the move, I just wish I had come sooner.
Now while I may have not have went through such tragedies as my muse have went through, I think I can relate myself to Kaneki in some respects. I have battled my own personal demons. I even had distanced myself from loved ones, only to realize the hard way I needed them just as much as they needed me. Given that I have recently became a father to a baby girl, I work harder than ever so my daughter can grow up without having to struggle as much as I did. When she is need of someone, whether in her best times or her worst, I want to be there for her.
I can go on, but ultimately I want to say thank you to everyone who has joined this ride. While I may not retire from writing as Kaneki or roleplaying in general anytime soon, despite my busy schedule in the real world, you have all made this journey very special.
Whether Ishida decides to continue on with the series after :re, I look forward to what’s to come in the future.
