something i've always rly liked about sekiro is that even tho it's so bare in terms of writing you get so much characterization out of wolf & genichiro's designs when they're placed next to each other--genichiro's the most politically important character in the game with an outspoken, honorable goal and clothes to match his nobility, but his gold-lined cloak is ripped to make room for a weapon and his clothes are there just to conceal his fucked up limbs that have literally been charred black, his burns the proof of his power-hungry heresy;

meanwhile wolf is... dirty as shit, wearing the same clothes since childhood, but the mark of the divine heritage is stark white and covering half his fucking face along with his scar--meant to represent his warring loyalties between his abusive father & generous charge and proof that an innocent child cared enough to save him and bestow upon him the godly immortality that genichiro can only attain a sad copy of. wolf and gen even have perpendicular scars in the same place on their faces

unfortunately the only fanart that exists of these two is omegaverse porn so i swore off looking either of them up on google image search but i can still appreciate the aesthetic!

these two women are both incredibly compassionate and deadly hunters, but where eileen is essentially faceless, likely postmenopausal, voiced by a black woman, and an outsider to yharnam who hunts the hunters themselves once they start killing innocents, 

maria is... a pretty white chick who was trained by the first hunter himself and as a result participated in a horrible defilement against an innocent village of people and lives the rest of her life regretting her decision before killing herself--all this on top of the way she’s objectified by gerhman and mischaracterized as this maternal sex doll contrasts so well w eileen’s self-possession it kills me

apologies for the like spam but i can always rely on you for good gaming takes, especially about games no one else seems to talk abt (dishonored and sekiro) and YEAHH bloodborne's narrative really was unkind to its female characters, huh? like how the lady of the night arianna is murdered by a nun (kind of) bc of your character, and how it was either the church or the mensis scholars who mutilated queen yharnam to get her umbilical chord. wack.

and tbh i don’t think bloodborne was necessarily unkind to its female characters without a PURPOSE; i found the city of yharnam really interesting as a clear allegory for victorian euro-white powers like the church and anthropological studies/sciences that fueled patriarchal xenophobia, and i think the misogyny that its cast experiences/participates in is an important part of that critique! the healing church and scholars and even oedon definitely come across as figures that are explicitly condemned by the narrative

like just for example i’m still slogging thru this long ass playthrough but something that really stood out to me is how the hunters’ treatment of kos and her worshipers is explicitly referred to as a “violation,” which has a LOT of connotations wrt to not only her pregnant body getting invaded but also how a peaceful village was tortured and massacred by european vigilantes because academic authorities considered them heretical. even eileen fits into this by standing out as one of the only characters voiced by a black woman, by acting as probably the only entirely self-possessed female character in the game, and getting characterized as an outsider to yharnam like the hunter! idek how to articulate myself but i like thinking lol

i'm still complaining about this but screeeaaams the masterful subtlety with which bloodborne explores male violence as enabled by agencies of whiteness like organized religion and anthropology... compared to the way dark souls fumbled gwyndolin's narrative as a trans woman whose canon gender they couldn't even figure out. i'm going to kill gamers
