And that “Matt’s still ‘part of the band’” metaphor is totally lame and doesn’t give him enough credit. He’s not just someone in the band, the two of them together are Lennon/ McCartney!
People need to know what concrete things Matt’s responsible of and in charge of, not just something vague and cryptic like that “band” thing 🙄
I also don’t think many know how intregral Matt’s input is in the writing process. They have said before that Matt keeps Trey focused on the story and what they’re trying to say. Without Matt, the story goes off on tangents and doesn’t stay structured. Matt helps Trey pull the story back and helps make sure that the story logic makes sense. Also, Matt pitches a lot of the ideas when just ranting about shit in the writers room. We die-hards know this truth! You see it in the bite and attitude of these shows - that’s Matt’s influence!

I just find it really disappointing and kind of upsetting that something as big and influential as the Simpsons (who I thought had a special mutual respect with South Park) would choose to make a statement like that.
I think there’s a long standing mutual respect between the two shows. And a mutual disregard for family guy. I like to think of it as a friendly roast. Cuz sometimes it’s fun to bust your friends balls.
I also think the joke is written almost as a acknowledgement to them sharing the work. Lisa is the general public in this scene...she sees the two of them, maybe she watches them on talk shows. The host lauds Trey as the creative genius. Also, matt is there too.
The writers are, in their own eye roll kinda way being like “sorry you deal with this being the preconceived notion of your dynamic. We know it’s not true”
