howdy

hello folks! i'm arden, he/him! i have a tendency to get incredibly invested in funny little characters from my brain, and write stories about them. i am totally on board with tag games and the like!

i mainly write character-based stories, with the setting being a bit of a backdrop unless it comes into play, with themes of selfhood, choice, queer identity, and healing. the main genre i write is fantasy, though sometimes i'll throw a little bit of sci-fi in there to spice it up.

my current projects are:

the words that cut (probably not the final name)

-genderfluid protagonist (single pov)

-explores the whole "names have power" thing with the fae, from a perspective focusing on the abuse that can result from that

-has made me think "am i evil or am i just processing trauma”

the stars still burn

-there are three main characters (povs change)

-main concept was "what if warlocks in space and also found family"

siblings but not in the "related by blood" way. in the "you are my reflection and my opposite and i hate you and i'm always looking for you over my shoulder" way.

i absolutely did not follow through on this yet but i've been very busy and have a lot of things i'd like to do still! i'm almost done with draft two and am so excited to be able to 1: look into getting beta readers and 2: get started on rewriting chapters i'm not super proud of

welcome to the forsaken desert, home to a subsect of fae and the crystal that they export. it’s said that derite is magical, with it altering the future of those who wear it depending on the cut. the more opaque and blue the stone, the stronger the affect it has on the life of the wearer. it ranges from a deep indigo to a dark cyan

common cuts include the gravedigger’s shovel, which is rumored to grant peace to the wearer and their loved ones after death, and is often worn in mourning, along with ever seen. this cut is meant to increase the likelihood of finding information, so it’s worn by students, scholars, and even spies. true sight is a mirrorlike cut that aims to assist the wearer in seeing their true self.

of course, all of this is said by the human merchants who prepare the stones for sale, not those fae who live in the desert. what we can confirm as fact is that the forsaken desert used to be an ocean, and that derite which still remains is worn smooth by its time in the waves.

the desert fae, often called stonefolk by outsiders as they are known for little beyond their reputation as suppliers of mystic crystal, do not survive in the desert through magic. instead, most live on the outskirts of the desert or near an oasis, only venturing out to gather or trade. while there is little life in the desert, they supplement items gained through barter with food and resources from the surrounding desert. as with all natural places, there are animals, if you know where to look for them.

crabs are all that thrive in the salty waters of the forsaken desert, with even cacti being few and far between. they lurk in oases, skittering about quickly and difficult to catch. however, no amount of speed can keep them from being caught in traps, and they are a common food amongst the desert fae.

started writing on 4theword and it has triggered something in me. i’ve had writer’s block for so long (since i couldn’t continue writing my stories as they were) so once i figured out i needed to do an overhaul i decided i didn’t want to do it on google docs (i don’t trust them not to slurp out my brain for their ai smoothie) so i started writing o it and like. it works so well for me?!? i think it’s because it’s got small rewards for writing so i feel like i’m accomplishing something immediately (since i’m not the best with long-term goals. i make them. i stick to them. i am sad the whole time). anyways i have written like 1000 words over 2 days after like a month of burnout happy writing to you
