Despite some inevitable criticisms of Bridgerton's recent season (I have critiques about EVERY season - and all the books. Yeah, I'm super fun, lol), I have to give S4 major credit for selling me on the fact that Benedict and Sophie are soulmates who really do complement each other perfectly.

Sophie has lived a life defined by duty, drudgery and obligation, so dreamy, adventurous Benedict is the perfect person to encourage her to think about who she truly is and follow her heart rather than always acting according to what's "right", expected and most likely to maintain harmony.

Meanwhile, Sophie gives Benedict the perspective, grounding and ethics that the idealistic, cluelessly privileged Benedict (and, let's face it, basically ALL the Bridgertons!) desperately need.

I love that the season's primary theme is fantasy vs reality - Benedict lets Sophie fantasize, dream, feel, and follow her heart and imagination for the very first time while she awakens him to reality and helps the perpetually 'searching', eager to escape Benedict realize that he can be quite happy with life as it really is.

4.06 The Passing Winter

I think my biggest Bridgerton pet peeve (so an admittedly trivial issue that no one except my weird self would care about!) is that 95% of the male romantic heroes are somehow ALL "the very biggest rake ever to seduce their way through London" lol.

For starters, I'm in the small minority who doesn't find rakes especially appealing - particularly in that era, when many were carrying serious STDs but untreated for them. Give me an introverted, awkward geek any day over a cocky, overgrown Regency-era frat boy who sleeps with (and then generally disregards) everyone with a pulse. (This taps into why I'm one of three Phillip Crane stans on the planet despite how absolutely horribly Julia Quinn depicted Marina's depression/suicidality and Phillip's response to it)

Secondly, most of Julia Quinn's "rakes" are...not actually rakes? And I don't mean that after falling in love with and being 'tamed' by the "right" woman (sigh), they totally reform their ways and magically become the poster children for faithfulness and monogamy. I mean that even PRIOR to falling in love, most of JQ's guys are not rakes at all. The most glaring example is Simon, who was actually an introverted math geek (I hate how the show failed to play that up!) whose main pre-Daphne goal was to minimize all social interactions with others due to the shame he felt around his stutter - he was almost always isolated and alone, not whoring his way through Europe!

The Bridgerton males as a whole are pretty much boy scouts compared to the norms of that era and even as compared to most other fictional romances set in that era, not wild rakes lol. It's eye-rolling enough that we have to be explicitly reminded in every book that the Bridgertons are the most wealthy beautiful popular close-knit happy smart charming talented generous witty adored sought after etc etc etc family ever to exist...do we also need to pretend that that they're "bad boys" when they really aren't?!

But even if I personally adored rakes as much as Lady Whisteldown and most of 'the ton' seem to, and even if many of Julia Quinn's heroes did come off as convincing rakes based on their lifestyles and histories, do we really need nearly ALL of her featured heroes to be alleged rakes?! Like, variety is the spice of fictional life, Julia - please explore a different trope!!! And if you try to insist that every single guy is the very biggest rake ever to grace the continent, then it's a superlative that totally loses its meaning.

I can't defend or even explain why, but the "he's the biggest rake ever---no, wait, my NEWEST hero is the very biggest rake ever" thing always annoyed me about this series. It says a lot about me that "introverted, intelligent, attention-eschewing" Marcus Holroyd from Just Like Heaven is one of my very favorite Julia Quinn heroes :)
