Imagine being Valarr. You are the "Hope of the Realm," carrying the weight of Baelor Breakspear’s legacy on your shoulders, and your own cousin is out here breaking fingers and claiming he’s a dragon in human skin.

​How many times did Valarr have to apologize for Aerion? How many times did he have to look at the madness in his cousin's eyes and wonder if they were even made of the same blood? How did he fall in love with someone like Aerion? Valarr was the sun, but Aerion was the wildfire that eventually burns everything down.

They think of the way he died and say, “He was insane.”

But I am not sure it is that simple.

Aerion grew up in a house that told its children they were closer to dragons than to men.

He was told his blood was special. Powerful. Different.

If you tell someone that often enough, they may start to believe it.

So when Aerion drank wildfire, maybe he did not think he would die.

Maybe he truly believed he would change.

That he would become what his family always said he was.

That is not just madness.

That is blind faith.

And blind faith can be more dangerous than cruelty.
