Small update but there are some great caps here! Head on over to the gallery to see them now! :)
The Ghost Monument Barcodes
What is a barcode? Each pixel represents 1 second of footage, compressed horizontally (this is done by extracting every frame, compressing then to 1px wide, montaging them together then compressing that to 4%). A smoothened version is provided, where it has been compressed vertically to 1px and back out to 960px.
Why? For some, it’s because it looks really pretty. For others, it’s because it gives a fantastic visualisation of the colours used, for how long, where and its progression through an episode or movie. Colour can help define a character, set the mood and reflect on the drama by intensifying it.
(I also have barcodes for half of the Whoniverse so far!)

50% Completion! Woah, that was unexpected!
I've just unexpectedly found out that the gallery has surpassed 50% completion for phase 1! So far, there are 1,656,478 screencaps (taken every half second) taking up 580gb, not including the additional downloadables feature, culminating from tens, if not hundreds, of man hours. Amazing!
(For early access, see my Patreon. Exact launch time is still unknown as I have lots of other more important things to deal with first.)
Whoniverse Gallery Update!
It's been ages since I talked about the gallery. Since the last time, I've spent hundreds of hours working on the site, mostly getting content prepared and up. Things are still incomplete; still unlaunched but I figured I'd share the main updates/recap:
**Content Added**: So far, I've been purely focusing on screencaps and barcodes (albeit, that one not yet online). There's now around 3-4x as much content. Over 1.4 million screencaps, with Doctors 1, 2, 3, and 12 complete! OVER 200 HOURS OF CONTENT! Almost 500gb of (local) storage used! Over 6TB of extracted frames backed up! Yikes!
**Social Media Launched**: Twitter: https://twitter.com/whogallery Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WhoniverseGallery/ Tumblr: http://whoniversegallery.tumblr.com/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/WhoniverseGallery/
**Patreon Launched**: I've also launched a Patreon in order to help fund the costs of the server. Alas, I'm presently unemployed (and starting to get used to rejection once again!) and still running on empty so any support, be it Patreon or one-off to PayPal, would be much appreciated. Currently, there are early gallery access and immediate prioritisation as tiers.
**Landing Site**: There's now a landing site for additional information (i.e. more detailed about pages), forum, newsletters and similar things.
**Deduped downloadable archives:** I also have a large folder of zip archives where they've had all the frames processed and deduped to the higher quality ones available for download by episode/serial. It's specifically for people who want to download a shitload caps from a specific thing and easily find the higher quality ones without searching through the site for a specific shot at a specific time That's stored on the Google drive and would be downloaded indirectly from there.
**Performance Enhancements**:
This is actually a pretty recent one so I'm gonna go into more detail. Just recently spent a couple days trying to make the gallery load a bit faster, mostly through a few system changes and hacks. And lots of failing at using shit that I didn't realise wasn't updated yet. Most of this came from a) Increasing cache sizes by like 20x and swapping far far less than the default recommended. b) Hacking in a rudimentary caching system used for certain queries, which automatically expire after x amount of time (12 hours atm) or when I clear it. This generally means that there won't be much improvement on first page load but there should be for future page loads within that time frame. Not gonna help much now (outside of constant refreshing of a page for shit like random pics) but I hope that if the site gets popular, it should be less annoyingly slow as a whole. I've not yet touched any of the randomising bits but I'd like to soonish so hopefully there can be further improvements there.
Other changes:
New URL (alas, secret for now) for CloudFlare usage.
Updated gallery software (with sending off a few fixes for other people).
HTTP is deprecated. Everything gets redirected to HTTPS.
I've added a logo as a favicon and setup all the proper mobile stuff. That means there's a cool coloured bar and you can add a shortcut to your mobile home screen, Windows 8/10's Taskbar/Start Menu and whatever the fuck Mac uses easily and it'll look awesome! :)
There's a bot on the Doctor Who Discord where if you type `!random` in the shitpost channel, it will post a random pic from the gallery. Neat, eh?
Cheers!
I’m going to be immensely busy over the next fortnight, but here’s another teasing screenshot of the site in its current state.
Series 10 needs to be replaced/finished by Blu-ray versions and I need to figure out some way to make random image generation far faster since it currently takes a few seconds to load on seasons and Doctors and several seconds to load on the homepage! This is because there are MILLIONS of images there. There's a way but it comes with some cons, mainly consisting of slight bias if images are removed (which would probably happen, especially as qualities are upgraded) and needing to edit someone else’s code!
Check out the new logo for the upcoming Doctor Who Gallery, which already has half a million screencaps ready for the opening!
Also on Twitter/Facebook social media pages. What do you think, eh?
