Valentina: YOU DARE MAKE PLANS WITHOUT ME???? I'M COMING OVER. RIGHT NOW.
It's Only Monday | Closed
The Queen loved crowns but she did not like the way they weighed on her neck after long hours and she loved thrones but did not like the way they made her back ache and she loved her royal scepter but did not like the way she could only cause minimum damage when she threw one at a member of her court (the King had told her this was because they were just heart shaped lollipops, but she wasn't certain.)
She stared out of the large windows that let in the afternoon sun. It would be morning soon, she noted, after night of course. She yelled at a servant for more tarts, and when they didn't materialize in front of her she ordered him to be executed.
One of the members of her court-he looked like a Spade- timidly approached her and said the walrus had been captured. The Queen smiled, because this was very good news; she had been hunting for a walrus for some time now.
They dragged in the Walrus, a tall wide man with a hideous mustache and a pipe. His accomplice, who was known as the Carpenter, was thrown at the Queen's feet as well. She regarded them both with a sniff, a bit bored already with the whole thing. Her flowers needed some attention, and she hadn't asked them about the latest gossip in hours. Being a Queen was a tedious thing, because you missed so much.
The King read the charges and the Queen ate her cherry tarts and complained about the flavor. At the end of it all, the Walrus and the Carpenter were both sobbing and begging for her forgiveness. The Queen smiled. Everyone who had spent any length of time with the Queen knew this was a very bad thing.
She told them to run along, they were free. They stuttered and gasped, and she waved her hand, dismissing their exclamations of gratitude. When they were out of court, she watched the wide windows until she spotted them running out down the steps, towards the gates. She smiled again.
And then she released the bandersnatch.
I NEED A NEW DRESS!
Okay, so you’re looking for something red, but black will do as well so long as it isn’t coal black, you like a bit of bling and hearts are a big big feature, but you want something form fitting. Got it.
Oh, I don’t need to write it down! I’ve got it all up here. Gowns… so, are you looking for like, a day dress, or a formal thing? What I can do kinda depends on that.
Formal of course. My dear husband is having a feast in my honor.
And since I'm the Queen, I must look the part, don't you think?
I NEED A NEW DRESS!
A new dress, huh? Well, you’re looking at a dressmaker, so I might be able to help you out!
So, you’re looking for something different to your usual style? What is your usual style?
Let's see...Something red of course, but I don't have an aversion to black or onyx or even obsidian. But contrariwise: NO COAL! Most of my gowns sparkle like a million pearls in the oyster sea, and they have HEARTS! Maaaaaaaaaaany hearts dear, that's quite important. I always have hearts, but my gowns are so terribly heavy. I am not a heavy woman myself, see??? Hmmmm???? So maybe if I had something that could flatter my figure more.....Yes, yes, utterly lovely. Terrifically. Truly.
...Are you writing this all down?
I NEED A NEW DRESS!
A new dress you say, what ever is the occasion?
My king is having a feast in my honor. I've just returned home you know, Wonderland cannot dream of flourishing without its Queen. And, in the same sense, I cannot dream of flourishing without all my cabbages. Oh! Hehehehe.....Your invitation will be arriving soon, of course. I like to use rabbits for correspondence. Very punctual, you see.
Speaking of which, has your little search been successful yet? Or is your weed still hiding?
I NEED A NEW DRESS!
Something.....different.....unique....Perhaps something I haven't tried before hmm?
But it must be red.

Alice watched as redness spread across the Queen’s face, struck with the idea that she may be about to lose her temper. Her own pills had worked so effectively that they had essentially shut her emotions down, and she couldn’t feel anything beyond mild irritation had she wanted to, and so she found it curious that the Queen seemed to be able to get angry. If she could overcome the doctors and the medicine, what else could she possibly do?
"Never leave? Why? If they were just scared, couldn’t they just get over it?" She was struck with a pang of fear at the idea of being trapped in Wonderland forever, only to shrug it off. The Queen hadn’t said that they were trapped after all, just scared - of course they weren’t trapped. She didn’t much care about the king, truth be told, so she found herself paying little attention to Valentina as she spoke about him, watching the older woman’s mouth move without hearing much of what she said. As Val picked pieces off her side of the board she frowned, lifting her head out of her hand and snatching up one of the Queen’s bishops, somewhat annoyed by how she had so carelessly taken what was hers. That wasn’t the way to do it at all.
"I’m sure it is, but I’ve never seen anything beautiful that was especially dangerous, except for rose thorns. But you’re playing the game wrong! You’re supposed to move pieces from your side of the board, not mine… how is Wonderland so dangerous? And what about your heir?" She set the bishop to one side and leaned in to the table again, elbows on it as she cupped her chin in her hands. "Wouldn’t they be able to visit you if everyone else stayed in Wonderland?"
Valentina yawned as Alice snatched up one of her bishops. Such a predictable move, the Queen thought. How dull, how utterly boring. She yawned again as Alice jabbered on, and in the back of her mind she wondered if perhaps Alice knew any poems. It had been awhile since she'd heard a nice poem. But when the girl claimed that she was playing the game wrong, Valentina's mouth spread slowly into a wolfish grin.
"Wrong?" she asked innocently, sitting straighter. "Oh Alice, you don't understand. Being the Queen means that I can move however I want, don't you see? Now, I could move my knight here," she said conversationally, setting down the piece with a hard thud. "Or I could decide to call your pawns prawns from now on. And let's see...I can do this," she spun the board around so that Alice's white pieces were now on her side. "And I can change the rules entirely. For instance, every move you make from here on out is faulty. And if I'm so inclined I can discard of the gAME ALTOGETHER!" at this she snatched up the board and threw it across the room. Black and white pieces flew up in the air, and everyone in the common room turned their heads. Valentina clapped her heads together, laughing heartily. "I win! Come come Alice, that's enough of that," she stood up, grabbing her hand and dragging her along behind her.
"Wonderland is dangerous because few people understand it, Alice. Say, for example, you didn't know a stove was hot. And let's say you touched that stove and your hands became very cold. If only you'd known! Of course in this analogy Wonderland is the pot of stew sitting on the stove. Have you seen the walrus? WALRUS!" she called. "I REQUIRE YOUR ASSISTANCE! Did you say something about the air child?" she asked as an afterthought. "I simply have no clue what you're talking about, because I take air with me wherever I go. And that's common knowledge."

Alice listened attentively, dutifully as Valentina described her former life of luxury, nodding at appropriate points, trying to remember just how much eleventy stood for, where Atlantis was and why she got the distinct feeling that Val was rubbing something in. Still, she didn’t mind; it was nice to be making conversation, even if it was mostly one-sided at this point in time. She found herself shrinking back in her seat as Val’s voice suddenly increased in both pitch and volume, with an urge to clap her hands over her ears to block it out but thankfully it only lasted a moment before Val’s voice returned to normal and Alice sat upright again, placing the pawn she had been toying with back on the board.
"It all sounds wonderful, Your Majesty," she said, watching as Val moved her pawn, looking down at her own side of the board. "I’ve never heard of anything like it before… but I did hear something about all those roses of yours. People used to paint them, didn’t they?" Sometimes, when she tought about it, she felt as though she had been one of those people, but whatever memories she had of it were being locked up and sealed away by her pills. Maybe one day, when she was better, she would remember.
"We never had roses in our garden. Mother used to prefer wildflowers, and I always liked the daisies in the back garden, but Lorina always used to tell me off over them - I used to make crowns out of them. Not crowns like your crowns," she hastily added, moving one of her knights out on to the board. "Just flowers ones. She said I used to leave them everywhere, but I was just trying to give her presents! She hasn’t visited in a while… does anyone ever visit you, Your Majesty?" Leaning forward she folded one arm across the table, before propping herself up on her elbow. "I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in the visitors room. Don’t any of your friends come to see you?"
Talking about the castle made Valentina suddenly feel a strange tug in her chest, something she might have described as longing if you had asked. She was not starved for attention here in the asylum; in fact, many of the patients were in complete awe to have a Queen among them (and such a beautiful one at that) and liked to follow her around often, asking many many questions. Just now they watched her from their chairs and sofas in the Common room, knowing that she didn't want to be bothered at the moment. But the second she ended her game with Alice, they'd trail after her, complimenting her prowess and asking her if she'd tell them about life as a Queen.
So when Alice mentioned roses and paint, her eyes snapped up, and she was a little startled. "Yes," she said, an edge creeping into her voice. "There are many, many traitors you have to watch out for. People lie often, and they ruin so many lovely flowers in the process," she could feel her cheeks flush angrily and for a moment her fists clenched. Normally the very thought of painted roses would have sent her on a tirade, but the pills had softened her. She could not bring herself to do more than scowl, and after a few seconds even her furrowed eyebrows relaxed.
She waved her hand dismissively. "My ladies in waiting could never leave Wonderland, oh no they'd be entirely too frightened. And my husband...He has much work to attend to," she said, turning her attention to the board. Reaching over, her fingertips plucked Alice's rooks straight from their place and she tossed them carelessly over her shoulder. "I miss him," she sighed, "But someone must take care of Wonderland while I am away. It is a very beautiful place Alice, but it is also quite dangerous at times. Such is custom for beautiful things."

She wasn’t losing days anymore, but she was certainly losing track of them. It felt like she had been in D’Arqueham for months now, though she couldn’t say for sure if it had been that, or only a few days, or weeks, or even years. She had started therapy, at least, though her sessions were curiously short, and her therapist even shorter with her, barking out questions she wasn’t sure how to answer and talking about increasing her treatment. The pills she took had stopped her hallucinations at least, but apparently they came with a few side effects, the most prominent being that no matter how hard she tried, she simply couldn’t sleep. It wasn’t a dreadfully happy state of existence, but she had only to look at the others who shared a ward with her, the ones restraint with jackets and cuffs and muzzles, to know that she had it a lot better than some of the others.
The Queen, at least, was being a friend to her. Her other friends, from outside, still came to visit her, which she appreciated, but she found herself getting nervous about the ones who didn’t visit. Berlioz, for a start. Lorina hadn’t been back since the first day either, and her parents seemed to be doing their best to keep their distance too, something she couldn’t help worry about. They were coming to see her one day, weren’t they? Weren’t they?
She hadn’t much time to think on it that day. Valentina had invited her to play a game of chess, muttering about the colour of the pieces, and Alice sat quietly listening to her, obediently taking her place at the side of the board with the white pieces. Her daily dosage was starting to kick in, making her docile and all too willing to do what she was told, hands folded in her lap as she waited for Val to move her first pawn. At the mention of Wonderland, though, something sparked in her eyes, and she looked up sharply, mouth hanging slightly open.
"You’d really tell me about it? Of course I would!" Lately she had found it hard to visualize Wonderland the way she used to, though she supposed that was only to be expected with the pills. And that was what she wanted, right? It was what everyone else wanted for her, at least. Picking up one of her chess pieces, she began to roll it between her hands as she spoke, struggling to remember what was in Wonderland that she could ask her to describe. "Would you tell me about your castle? I mean, I know about it, a little bit, but I’d love to know more!"
Alice answered the Queen immediately, and with such interest that Valentina could barely suppress a giggle. She'd been taking her pills since she arrived at the asylum with no complaint so far. It had a peculiar calming effect on her, and it reminded her of her husband's kind voice, his soothing little hands pressed against her palm as she tried to execute someone else. It was a nice feeling, and she didn't want it to go away just yet. When she tired of the medicine, she would stop taking them. To Valentina, it was as simple as that.
"The castle, oh yes. What better way to start than with the very best," she watched Alice play with one of the pieces, folding her own hands in her lap. "It is very old you know, older than Atlantis even, and certainly older than Pride Rock. Wars' battles have torn it down, Peace's gold built it up again. Every major house has lived there at some point in time you know, but now the Harte's will live there forever, with my heir following as Queen after me.
"There are more rooms than I could ever hope to count-at least eleventy seven you see, so it is very vast- and the air always smells like the freshest roses. That's because of my gardens, miles and miles of gardens everywhere. And croquet grounds too-that is very important!" she said, her voice rising up sharply at the mention of croquet. She settled down again and gave a sweet smile to Alice.
"I have seamstresses and tailors to make only the finest gowns for me, and people come from all over Wonderland just to kiss my hand. There are jewelers and blacksmiths and the finest ladies in waiting who fetch my things and sings songs just for me. Every night there is a grand feast in one of my enormous ballrooms and the jesters make me laugh and the actors perform lavish plays about Wonderland. And," she said, her eyes shining impishly, "I can have all the tarts I want."
Without speaking she nudged a pawn up one square, a very modest move indeed.

Alice still hadn't accepted her madness, the poor, poor thing. The Queen of Hearts watched her with a curious fascination: the teenager took her medications seriously, attended each and every appointment with no complaint. She had visitors, many of them, and she though her eyes were tired with worry she somehow seemed to always keep one eye on the exit door at all times. Valentina couldn't say with honesty that Alice reminded her of herself, not now at least. However, there was still something that kept her drawn to her, and that was why they now played chess in the corner of the common room.
Valentina hadn't yet told her about Wonderland, and she decided that now was surely the time. The chessboard was laid out on a small table between them, and Val gave a disapproving shake of her head.
"Red pieces, there should be red pieces. Oh well," she waved her hand dismissively. "I'll be black, child you'll be white. And I'll go first," she ran her fingers lazily through her hair, and she spoke again without touching a single piece.
"Would you like to hear about Wonderland?"
It's all so terrible
Your Majesty? Are you feeling alright?
My mother, my own mother who I haven't seen in years, is locked away in here somewhere and I'm not allowed to see her. Can you imagine? Her last living child, a Queen, and I can't even see her!!
It's all so terrible
STUCK? Why Miss Queen of Carts, you must simply have more tea and screws with your nugwart!
Do me a favor, March. Go stand outside, near the road. And when you see a car coming in your direction, jump in front of it.
It's all so terrible
Terrisocket, I think you shall find!
