Printing implies reproduction whereas making implies innovation; hovering between these two points gives us a lot of scope in the subject. Printmaking is an extra ordinary broad and flexible medium which is constantly reviewing itself - endlessly inventive. MICHAEL QUAIA

   You'll find here with us Michael's amazing prints, spacing between architecture and visual design of some of the most famous buildings with shapes of colours... with us My Tea Shop & Shard - London Bridge  series of 40.

Michael Quaia is a designer and printmaker, whose furniture company, FioreQ, was launched in 2013 at Most Salone in Milan.

Michael's prints are inspired by buildings whose character and presence manage to penetrate deeply into the atmosphere of the London streets below, as well as by the more subtle monuments found within interior spaces.  He explores the monumentality of buildings and interiors through the expressive physicality of the marks created in printing. The energy generated by this friction between subject and process is used as inspiration for the bold structures, unconventional angles and tactile surfaces of his unique and characterful furniture.

JONATHAN ELLIS

Jonathan is showing some of his amazing unique works: A/Ps of a three plate aquatint etchings.

"I trained in Painting at the Royal Academy Schools and then as a printmaker at Central School of Art in London. Starting out as a portrait painter, I also became an art teacher and a course leader and tutor on adult painting courses, which I continue to enjoy providing. My own practice is increasingly concerned with the figure and depicting the human form in a lively, rigorous and intense way. The nature of oil paint itself, which as Ralph Steadman said, writing about Rembrandt "is itself an object, subject to its own motivation, rules and dynamic which the artist must overcome, ignore or amplify" is paramount, more intrinsic than even subject matter or Patrick Heron's disdainful "mere verisimilitude". Intensive study of the masters is the paradigm to which I constantly return. My printmaking is primarily about pattern and flat colour. My painting, although I paint with persistence, is stubbornly about freedom of markmaking in the search for something that is truly personal."

ALESSANDRO FOGO

Alessandro is coming to show us some of his amazing hybrid ex - creatures.

Something about Alessadro:

Alessandro started his engraving practice 4 years ago, with the animal skulls series. In 2013 he won the "Premio Nazionale Grafica Italiana" which is the national graphic prize for student with one of his drypoint engraving called "The life of Stefano".  His engraving practice is quite different from his painting one: with drypoint and etching he mixes animal and human skulls, dealing with them as basic structures to make new beings and shapes between abstraction and representation.

SOPHIE MILNER

Sophie is coming to show some works and also original prints made for the artwork of the band Mumford and Sons, especially from the album "Love Your Ground".

More About Sophie: 

Sophie Milner is a London based artist known for her collaborations with musicians such as Laura Marling, Rachel Sermanni, Mumford and Sons, Emily and the Woods and Pete Roe. An appreciation of folk music as an ever evolving genre led her to the heart of the British folk revival that has emerged in recent years. Working with a broad range of mediums and techniques, her work is now recognized for its intricate, hand crafted approach that interweaves a myriad of influences; including medieval alchemic drawings, nineteenth Century woodcuts, Victorian silhouette art, japanese ink work, botanical illustrations and indian folk art.

Past collaborations include special edition releases with the prestigious Vinyl Factory, pop up CD cases, picture-engraved vinyl, secret prints in gatefold sleeves and five-foot hand printed posters. In 2011 she held her first exhibit of music related artwork with the cult roots music nightWoodburner, at East London’s speak-easy venue The Old Boys Club. Later that year she was commissioned by Mumford and Sons to embellish an antique piano for an installation in London’s Hyde Park. In 2012 she was Artist in Residence at Camden’s Roundhouse for their biennial CircFest. She is currently undertaking a six-month artist residency at The Owl Barn in Gloucestershire, where she is developing a new body of personal artwork to be exhibited early next year.

‘One thing that interests me about the current British folk revival is how the aesthetics of the music can be interpreted as a response to the rapid advances in technology that our generation has grown up with. The musicians that I have come to know within this genre are often united in their nostalgia for simpler ways of living and being in this world. Their music expresses a longing to reconnect to the land and to each other in a way that technological advances seem to have threatened. In this way their romantic subject matter and poetic use of language can be interpreted as a reaction to a rapidly changing environmental and personal landscape. Furthermore their choice of instruments and recording techniques can be interpreted in relation to a massive upheaval in the musical landscape, now dominated by digital production and assimilation. There is a strong sense of community values amongst these artists, harking back towards roots movements and reverence for the oral tradition. Being romantic in your lifestyle and artistic pursuits is often met with distain in the contemporary artistic climate. However there has always been an important role in society for artists who aim to inspire through their selective and often utopian ideals and reflections. Such artists signify the human desire to dream beyond the everyday and into a kaleidoscope of histories, both artistic and social. Folk music and art has always reflected this tug of war between nostalgia and progression, to yearn for the lost through the creation of the new. For me, it is the most fascinating tension that lies at the heart of its production.’

MADHVI SINGHAL

In Madhvi's style there is still the taste of an oriental style, but transmuting into a contemporary proto-futuristic vision, executed with the tradition of the woodblock. A reminder of a Nature...with hopes set up in the future...

This piece shows the connection between the soul and the body; the way they share thoughts. The background depicts an imaginative conversation between them.

It is a combination of minute and bold work. This is the 2nd edition out of 5. Presently - two editions of this work.  

More about Madhvi:

"Art is a world of freedom. It provides wings to my surreal thoughts. I find this extremely gratifying.

I have been in the field of printmaking for last seven years and my forte is Etching. The thing that fascinates me the most about Etching is that it provides opportunities to play with different textures, lines, layers and a wide spectrum of colors at the same time. The possibility of cutting the plate in desired shapes and mixing of multiple techniques along with Etching allows a lot of scope for exploration.

Apart from Etching, I have practiced various other printmaking techniques like Aquatint, Serigraphy, Lithography, Woodcut, Linocut, Dry-Point and Collagraphy. I also have working experience in computer graphics, photography, oil colors, water colors, dry pastels, charcoal and poster colors.

My inspiration is my surroundings. Nature, human behavior and the connection between the two are the subjects I like to explore. Female figures and textures are important parts of my work. Currently, I am working on headless figures because I want to depict humans, in general, not any particular individual. Face is one of the primary things we use for identification. So these headless figures help me to achieve my aim."

MARYAM ZAKWANI

Maryam’s work has transformed from pure 2D Etching prints into mixed media installation work that question global warming and human implications that have accelerated climate change over the years. 

About Maryam:

MaryamZakwani’s forced ice melting concept conveys the idea that technology and industrial development are accelerating the rate of global warming. Creating a connection with technology, climate change and the viewer she provokes the question as to whether we are causing destruction, represented by the ice destroying the nature inspired prints. Printmaking, much like nature is one of the most permanent forms of art, demonstrating how something as permanent as nature can be destroyed by our impact on the world.

INGA IVANOVA

Inga is an experimenter. Through her style she would also test reality which would remain somehow suspended into the infinite sense of waiting for something to happen, to have an end, to become a result -to  be constructed. 

About Inga:

" I specialise in alternative darkroom printing techniques. Currently I am a resident of the Double Negative Darkroom and am working on a project leading up to a solo show. The project I am working on revolves around construction sites in London. I monitor a few building sites within the inner city and am particularly interested in the starting stage of a construction, but also take incremental shots as the works take it's course. Within the darkroom I often take certain parts of a photograph that describe or accentuate the building materials or structure which helps me find the process of printing accordingly. The images I would like to submit are parts of a site in Canary Wharf processed in Lith on warm tone paper. "

SINTIJA VIKMANE

Sintija is soon showing works that would find expression and visualization into one and the same figure - combining in itself, all different traits at the same time, yet so harmonious as a construction of a  whole. As almost finding an "Absolute" word. 

Something more about Sintija:

Born in 1989,Sintija Vikmane is an emerging artist based in Hatfield. Currently she is studying Fine Art at the University of Hertfordshire. She has finished Interior design, Art history and Classical Art studies in Riga, Latvia. Sintija helped to curate Augustin Rebetez personal exhibition last year and will be participating in a group exhibition this summer in Brighton.Trough her art, she researches the convergence of history, beliefs and mythology from diverse cultures in an attempt to make engaging and critical art. Expressing herself trough  printmaking she aims to make conceptually and physically provocative art that opens up a space for dialogue.

GEORGE GKREKAS

 George's style is a ladder to reaching out easily the best memories and dreams a person could ever imagine of.  His technique links myth and truth all at the same time, leaving only the spectator to lean out where he would feel more comfortable and letting him choose his own way at looking at the world..whether real..or not.

Something more about George:

George Gkrekas studied Fine Arts at the Athens School of Fine Arts and Graphic Design at Vakalo School of Art and Design (Athens). His work has been awarded and exhibited in many galleries in Athens, Thessaloniki, Prague and London. His previous work was mainly related to engraving inspired by the caricature forms of Goya, and lately has been engaged with painting and illustrations.

His oeuvre, based on surrealistic forms, is an imaginative artefact of still images or active binary elements in bare, impersonal spaces. Movement is implied as a preliminary motive for reconstructing a new life out of memories, more real than real, because it is chosen. In his late work he uses mix media techniques, carbon painting mixed with soy sauce, coloured paintings combining oil, coloured pencils and graphite. George Gkrekas has also curated many exhibitions in Athens, Greece. 

He currently lives and works in London.
