Frequently Asked Questions about the box boy universe and how to join. I am super excited this idea has continued to grow and evolve with so many people still joining in and asking questions! Hopefully this FAQ can answer most of the questions you might have. (If you are an established BBU fan, please check out the updated information about Tagging and the BBU Multiverse Masterlist.) - Jay

Q: What is a Box Boy? A: A box boy is a boy who comes in a box. Typically custom ordered from a company like Whumpees-R-Us.

Q: Who came up with the box boy universe?  A: The original concept was created by sweetwhumpandhellacomf, popularized by @shameless-whumper (now this account @the-host-and-colton), and further developed and rocketed into popularity by @ashintheairlikesnow. 

Q: Am I allowed to join? Who do I ask? A: Yes! You are allowed to join. You do not need to seek permission from any creator in order to join the BBU.

Q: Who do I tag for credit?  A: UPDATE!! You do not need to tag anyone. (UNLESS you are referencing a specific character.*) Both sweetwhumpandhellacomf and shameless-whumper would prefer to no-longer be tagged. We appreciate all of the credit and tags thus far, but the BBU has evolved far beyond us and we’d prefer not to be tagged in the future! Thank you!

I’m so glad I’m seeing more and more Lundy Bancroft quotes on my dash because this book CHANGES THE LIVES OF ABUSE VICTIMS. The programs run for rehabilitating abusive men through the courts? Bancroft DESIGNED THEM. His programs are replicated ALL OVER THE WORLD. He literally wrote THE book on abuser rehabilitation.

But also, for those who write in a fantasy or historical setting which includes plate or other very heavy armor, I thought you mighy find this interesting.

@redwingedwhump do any of the characters in your stories wear plate armor? I don't remember. But I thought of you.

This is also good to know for D&D players... i know the rules limit speed in full armor but that doesn't mean you can't roleplay some awesome stuff in plate armor!

Ahh! Thats so cute! What were your rats' names? I had three. Miss Sniffers, Maggie and Avalon. I will show you a picture now because I am feeling nostalgic.

I only have pictures of Avalon handy though xP I was, unfortunately, not an excellent rat owner. I didnt know enough and she was pretty chubby. If I ever get rats again, I'm much more knowledgeable now so I would be able to take better care of them.

Is there a psychology for those of us who have had an interest in whump since early childhood (like me)? I had a great childhood so it wasn’t a coping mechanism for early trauma, as I know some people approach it that way too. Are we whump-loving kids “profiled” any different than those who came to enjoy it later in life? I wonder 🤔

I have wondered this also! My childhood was.. exciting... at times and I'm sure some would claim my early interest in whump is linked to that buuut I don't think so.

It never felt connected. I have been having dreams/nightmares since very early childhood that were very whumpy. I liked to play whumpy games with my toys; I preferred the whumpier stories and episodes in cartoons/TV; I day dreamed about whumping my favorite characters; even my taste in music reflected my whump interests as a child. My favorite make believe games always involved some degree of servitude or other hardship. Sometimes I was the whumper, sometimes I was the whumpee and sometimes I was the caretaker.

My interest in whump showed up in nearly EVERY aspect of my life by choice because even at 6 or 7 years old, I would sometimes get whumperflies and I was always seeking out that feeling again. I was intrigued and I enjoyed it and it was the most entertaining and engaging way to play for me. I could get lost for hours upon hours in my mind with these things. I never linked my feelings/memories/experiences from the "exciting" things in my life to my play. It never even occurred to me. And when life did get "exciting" I didn't think of whumpy things. The two just never crossed until I was an adult.

Now, as an adult, I sometimes use whump to process specific experiences but mostly... whump is just a fun thing for me.

I did used to worry that this lifelong interest meant something about me, that maybe I should be concerned. I even went to counseling for it. And you know what I learned? A LOT of kids play this way and A LOT of them never grow out of the interest. It is so common that it is considered normal by at least some professionals (every professional I ever spoke to, anyway).

Having said that, I also recognize that we don't hear people talk about it as they get older (except in online spaces) and in fact, I noticed that most people I know, don't seem to care for whump. So while it is common enough to be called normal, it is also possibly a minority interest. And this makes me very curious about the OP's question.

AAAAAH! I GOT A ASK! 💙😁

Okay... I have a hard time picking just 3 that I like so I decided to go with one trope for each primary role Whumper, Whumpee, Caretaker... although I suppose the existence of an active whumper is almost a trope in itself since you can also have a whumpee that's just the victim of bad luck/circumstance/accident etc...

Anyway. I tried to tag this adequately but if I need to add other tags, feel free to let me know.

3 WHUMP TROPES I LIKE:

1. Impossible Tasks/Trick Questions + Gaslighting:

A whumper that sets up impossible tasks or trick questions for the whumpee. Especially if Whumper is gaslighting Whumpee in the moment by pretending there is a right answer and acting sad or disappointed in Whumpee when they fail, telling Whumpee it's their fault and they'll have to be retrained or punished.

Dgsksgsk there's a great example of this in one of the other whump blogs I follow but I am drawing a blank on any names or details at the moment except that Whumpee calls Whumper "Exalted" and I love it.

2. Stoic In The Face Of Pain/Learned Helplessness:

Whumpee accepting their punishment more or less willingly. Especially when Whumpee shows signs of their fear and apprehension despite their best efforts: a wobbly lip, shaking hands, barely controlled breathing, but Whumpee goes willingly to be punished anyway because Whumpee has All The Learned Helplessness

OMG Z2 from @deluxewhump 'sFrat House Boxboy series does this sometimes, I think. If I remember correctly.

3. Caretaker At A Loss/:

When Caretaker doesn't know how to respond to a situation involving the Whumpee or is too upset to respond appropriately so Caretaker has to either let Whumpee manage by themselves for a bit or Caretaker has to come up with stop-gap solutions until they are ready to handle the situation. Especially if this happens because Caretaker needs to take care of themselves and does! (Gotta take care of yourself before you can take care of others, Caretaker!)

There's a really great example of this in the @haro-whumps Group Whumpee story when Galo (Caretaker) is too upset to handle a situation with Evan (slave) and All The Terrible happens. It's wonderful :3

It's harder to say what I don't like because there isn't much that I just straight up dislike on its own merits buuut letsee.

1. Im not especially fond of sickfics unless there is an additional element of Hidden Identies involved, unusual/reluctant/guilty vulnerability or role reversal such as Whumpees taking care of Caretakers or civilians helping heroes. Basically, unless there's some source of power imbalance other than the illness itself, I tend to get bored.

2. Whumpee attempting Sexual Favors as Thanks/Gratitude to the Caretaker without any kind of cue or prompting (real or perceived) or regard for Caretaker's privacy (i.e. being in public or with other people). It's not a deal breaker for me, it just doesn't do it for me most of the time.

3. I cant think of a third thing xD.... graphic depictions of asphyxiation can be triggering for me but I actually like elements of asphyxiation in a story as long as it isn't too graphic... and I mean, it has to be *very* graphic to trigger me.

Theo sat in the potion shop under his house with a crossbow in his lap, a drink in his hand, and hundreds of grasshoppers at his feet. 

He was sitting next to his phone - it was made out of dark wood and affixed to the wall.

“Here are a few searches related to yours,” the phone said. The earpiece had a mouth, but Theo was careful to hold it away from his ear, because this phone’s mouth was full of very sharp teeth. “How to kill a golem. How to kill a cursed doll. How to get a cursed doll to fall in love with you.”

“That’s not what I asked,” huffed Theo. “I asked ‘how to kill a possessed human cursed to be a doll.’”

The phone paused. Then, “Do you want to lose 30 pounds in 30 days?”

Theo swore and hung up the phone, then finished his drink. “I’m just going to shoot it,” he said aloud. “If it’s possessed, I’ll figure out how to kill the poltergeist later.” 

Several hundred grasshoppers watched him. 

“It doesn’t matter how injured they are,” he said to the grasshoppers. “They summoned music out of nowhere! Curses and poltergeists can be contagious - and they’re full of wires.”

A grasshopper jumped onto his sleeve and Theo shook it off with a stern “No.” 

He stared at the grasshoppers, then sighed. “Fine. I will consider helping them, alright? But only because I’m curious what they are. Maybe they’re just cursed, and their family’s curse isn’t on record somehow - but I’m bringing the crossbow.”

Theo stood up gracefully, shouldered the crossbow, and tried to stomp his heeled boot on a grasshopper (He missed. He always missed).

Afternoon fluttered their eyes open.  

The bathwater was cold now, and they had slipped all the way under it. It’s okay, they thought. I only breathe to express myself. I don’t need to. I’m waterproof. They smiled.

The water swirled above them and shimmered beautifully, and Afternoon thought they must look very pretty under the water. Delicate from being injured. Sparkly, soft and  shivering from the cold.

First ~ The Burning House

Theo sighed and pushed his hair out of his face. He was standing in a burning building. 

The building was burning because he had lit it on fire, and his hair was in his face because he had decided against bringing a bandanna, because it would have clashed with his tweed suit. 

He had become more and more concerned about that type of thing lately. 

Theo picked his way around the burning colonial house - there were a few dead people he had meant to kill, and a few that he hadn’t exactly meant to, but wasn’t necessarily against killing. He didn’t find what he was looking for. 

He turned to leave, sighed again, and then begrudgingly coughed up a lungful of smoke. 

That’s when he saw a blanket-covered lump out of the corner of his eye - it wasn’t bleeding on on fire, so he hadn’t noticed it before. The rubber soles of his shoes stuck to the floor as he walked over to it - it was never good to leave a Guardian’s Den without checking that you killed them all. 

He pulled the blanket off them fast, to see what he could only assume was a person. 

They had a nose. They were caked in grey dirt, but upon closer inspection, they had lips and closed eyes. For a second Theo assumed they were dead - but then their eyes moved under their eyelids.

This idea has been stuck in my head for a while and wouldn’t let me off until I do something about it.

I wonder if those who look at the wordless comic strip would understand what I was trying to convey…

In a dystopian where corruption is common, Kuroko was sold to the auction house as a slave by his parents at a very young age. He was often tortured, abused, starved and made to do harsh physical labors. One day, he saw a child and his parent interact with each other, and he was filled with longing for someone who would care for him, but believed that it would never be possible. When he saw the child throwing away a half-eaten food, he immediately went to dig it out from the trash bin. However, he was caught by his masters for doing so and thus, was punished. His masters then left him in the abandoned basement of their mansion with little food and water. Akashi was maybe a prince or official-in-training sent to this rural town to deal with the corruption by his father as part of his training. As he was reading the notes about the town, he realised that slavery is a practice in the town and he immediately called for people to arrest those who took part in illegal human trafficking. He freed all the slaves in the mansion and gave them a huge sum of money to help them build a new life(so huge they could live comfortably for the rest of their lives). One of the older slaves then informed Akashi that there was still another slave, the youngest, who was bought when he was still a toddler, and that he knew nothing about a normal life. She then inform him that the kid is being locked up somewhere, as they haven’t seen him around for weeks.

Akashi immediately turned back into the mansion to look for that last slave. In the master’s bedroom, he found a dilapidated metal door cleverly hidden and picked the lock open. He head down the flight of stairs and open another door to find a young teenager staring back at him. As Akashi tried to approach the boy, the boy scurried and cowered away from him, up until he was cornered. The boy then went into a defensive position, curling up his body and covering his head while he whimpered in fear for the impending pain.

He was shocked, however, when instead of feeling pain, he was embraced gently. Looking up at the redhead, said redhead smiled kindly and told him, “You don’t have to be anyone’s slave anymore. You are free now.”.

Kuroko was so shocked to hear that that he cried, and Akashi simply held him as he calmed down.

After that, Akashi decides to bring Kuroko to his mansion and teach him about the normal life. Kuroko was, however, wary and terrified of everyone except Akashi, and he often still behaves like a slave. Though, over time, that changed, and Kuroko now acts like a normal person, except with recurring nightmares about his abuse.

Overtime, as Akashi showed Kuroko the ways of being a normal human(he refuse to send Kuroko back to his family after finding out from some old agreement papers that he was sold by his family), he slowly fell in love with Kuroko, finding him to be sweet and endearing. However, he is hesitant to act on it as he is worried that Kuroko would reciprocate his emotion out of gratitude and obligation.

When Kuroko realised that he too, loves Akashi, he then had to deal with his insecurities as a former slave and showing Akashi that his love is real and not out of obligations.

I am a horrible writer, drawing is the best I can do. Hope this would appease my mind.

Whump Writing Cheats

Want to write whump? Not sure how to get started? Here are a few whump writing cheats that make things easier! Feel free to add your cheats in reblogs!

Whumpee waking up. Has the character been drugged, beaned over the head, collapsed from exhaustion, does it matter? No one needs to know how, just what happens next! Have that whumpee regain consciousness dazed and confused, already tied up, and dive right in homies. 

Blindfolds. Not only are blindfolds lovely, but they remove the main sensory input for you to describe. Not sure who your whumper is? Blindfold. Not even sure where they are? Blindfold. This lets you focus on only dialog and touch descriptions and avoid the temptation to over describe visuals. 

Gags. Not sure what your whumpee would say? Can’t think of any witty comebacks? Gag ‘em.
