Ode to Fever Pitch
Arsenal 0 - Blackburn Rovers 1 FA CUP 5th Round
16th of February 2013 at The Emirates Stadium
Embarrassingly this was the main reason I decided to travel to the other side of the world, to the see 'The Arsenal' live. Only thing is, I'm not embarrassed.

Barca: A Tale of 2 Visits
As my good friends RB and CC head to Spain this week, it brought back awesome memories from my time in Barcelona. I had heard a lot about the place from watching a lot football as well as watching the ‘Dream Team’ documentary before the trip (watch it, it’s good) but I was also told from my older sisters who have both been there on their own backpacking experiences that it is an awesome city. Despite all that I found myself having my reservations about the place before going. It may sound ridiculous but maybe it was my way to kind of dull down my expectations. I think Judd Apatow got it about right.
Getting Lost
I'm sure a lot of people were already aware but the technological nomads out there such as myself didn't realise that the GPS on an Iphone works even when it doesn't have a data connection. I have to admit I actually thought that somehow I got some crazy free data connection allowed me to use Google maps for free. On reflection.... I'm a dumbass. All you have to do is when you are in a place which does have Wifi (eg. your hostel), search for the address where you want to go and save it as one of favourites on the app. This will place a star marker on your map. Now when you turn off the Wifi you will find that the map will stay loaded even though you don't have an internet connection. If you have 'Location services' turned on, your position on the map will show up on the map with a blue dot. Sometimes it takes a little while to locate you but eventually it gets there. Then all you need is to get the blue dot to the star. Pretty easy stuff.
Even when you haven't loaded the map when you had Wifi 'Location services' will give you the blue dot the only this is the map isn't very detailed.
Having the choice of when to get lost and not to has to be one of the wonders of modern technology. Makes me appreciate how my sisters backpacked but I say don't make travelling anymore difficult for yourself than it has to be. It definitely saved me a lot of stress and in the end it gave me more time. It also made me feel less than beacon for attention and I think allowed me to have a better time. What more could you want.
This article hits the nail on the head of what I don't want to become but think I may already slightly be
From Blog to Reflection
Due to abundance of activities and a cold hearted bitch girl in my hostel dorm in Brussels the Europe Blog was a bit of bust. However I am hoping to do a reflection on the cities that I visited.
It'll give me something to procrastinate on rather than figuring out what I want to do for the rest of the year
It was pretty funny reading the posts that I did manage to get out there.
It'll be even funnier if reading it years down the track and will hopefully jog my memory
McDonald's...it's good for you
I’ve been pretty cautious with my belongings so far on the trip and up until 20 minutes ago I thought I was being too cautious.
I’m on the way to visit some family in Antibes which is in the South of France. I’m travelling via train using a EuRail pass which has been cool so far. You get to see the country side which has been awesome (especially the snow capped mountains) and you also get dropped off right in the middle of your destination.
I found the downside to be that you can’t reserve trains in different countries eg I am coming from Spain going into a France, so I could book my train going into France but not my connection to Antibes. So I get to the Valence High Speed Rail station and boom the connection is fully booked…Poo. The attendant gave me another option of taking the normal train which would be free with my pass, no need to pay for a reservation. It really doesn’t take that much longer in actual train time, 4 hours compared to 3 on the high speed but I would have to go the Valence city station and then stop off in Marseille. The trip to Marseille isn’t too bad and I don’t have to spend any money on making a reservation. However, tip for the eurail pass if you’re using one the less changes till your destination the better. I was a tiny bit stressed!
I get to Marseille station and I’ve got 1.5 hours to kill until the train to Antibes. I decide to be a real tight arse and sit near enough to Maccas to get a Wifi signal but not buy anything. I’m checking Facebook, Nba and all that. When a guy around my age maybe a little younger comes and sits next to me, he is with his friend who sat on the bench next to us. Already it’s suss since there is plenty of room next to his friend.
He then speaks to me in French and I indicate to him that I don’t speak any and he then asks me in English where I’m from.
I tell him Aus and then he asks me for a favour…that he needs to make a phone call.
I tell him I’ve got no service it’s an Australian SIM. He then asks if he can see to which I reply ‘no’.
He then reverts back to French but in a much angrier tone and then grabs my arm and says ‘Money’ I reply ‘No, why should I give you money?’ (Really should have walked of then)
He then continues to speak in French in an angry tone to his friend sitting down and says to me ‘fuck the police, fuck the police’. After that I just walked away and said ‘NWA are old news fools…BOOYAKASHA’ not really it was more like ‘leave me alone!’.
Then I actually went to McDonald’s like I should have right from the start. On reflection if I gave him my phone it may have gone like this:
Guy 1: Takes my phone
Me: Stand up to try and take it back
Guy 2: Takes my bags
Me: Walk to the to police station like Charlie Brown
But thankfully that didn’t happen.
It made me feel pretty uneasy as I’ve maybe gone through a pretty sheltered life. I’ve been walking around Madrid and Barcelona at night and felt safe as houses. I don’t know why they picked on me, maybe it’s the glasses, can’t be my physique because I’m a tank, so I’m putting it down to me being alone.
In the future I am always going to McDonalds at any train station I’m waiting at. The food may not be great for you but there’s free wifi and most importantly it’s safe. There are always people around, cameras and good lighting. So there’s a tip for anyone travelling alone or even in a group, Just sit down and enjoy your Royale with Cheese (it’s the French quarter pounder but you Pulp Fiction fans already knew that).
Seniorita
Madrid has definitely been a challenge. I’ve got a lot of people speaking to me in Language I don’t know (which isn’t a whole lot different from when I’m Malaysia). I think one story pretty much sums it all up.
One thing about the people in Spain is that they aren’t morning people. So the norm is to have lunch at around 2-4 pm and dinner only from 8.30 pm onwards. This is one of the aspects I love about Spanish culture. For lunch they have something called ‘menu del dia’ which is like your lunch special for around 10 euro. What is awesome though is that includes a drink, bread, 2 dishes and dessert. You could easily pay over 20 euro for that at dinner so it’s a winner for sure.
The problem is that all the menus are in Spanish outside the restaurant. I spent ages on this day trying to decide which one and by the end I just walked into one called ‘La Pulpería de Victoria’. The very pretty waitress greeted me ‘Ola’ and I somehow managed to indicate I wanted the set menu. I then asked her if she spoke any English and most of the people I had encountered throughout the city spoke a little bit but she just looked at me and said ‘No’ and smiled. I sat down anyway because luckily I eat pretty much anything.
She came to take my order and what she did was write down all the options for me to pick for the entree on a piece of paper. The only thing that stuck out to me was a paella so I just went for that. She took my order to the kitchen and came back to me with another list for the second dish but this time nothing stood out and she tried to explain the dishes to me in Spanish but errr me no comprehendé. I kinda made out that she pointed out three that contained meat so I picked the last option. Worst case scenario it would be horse, the Brits have been eating that stuff for awhile anyways.
The paella came out and it was a mixed seafood one and it was delish! Full of flavour. There were a fair few cockles mixed through which is a favourite of mine. I polished that off pretty quickly and then arrived the mystery dish. If it was master chef (which I did see the audition set for Spain while here) there would have been a half a dozen close ups and a cut to an ad break…but its not. The dish looks like pretty much like scrambled eggs but it smells awesome. It turns out to have cheese and fish as well. It probably wouldn’t have been my first choice if I had a clue what I was doing but it was aiight. She wrote down the list for the dessert and again I had no idea so I just picked the first one. Turned out to be a banana and cinnamon custard which was really good as well. Still have no idea what I ate but ahh well.
After I finished I went to use the restroom but when I got there the 2 doors had a ‘C’ and a ‘S’ on them. Naturally I had to pause and think which one to use/wait for someone to come out. The restaurant was pretty quiet so no one came out but luckily I remembered listening to JT Seniorita on my iPod earlier and chose door C. Thank you JT, can’t wait for you to drop Magnum on us.
I live by the River!
It is FREEZING! I have never been that cold in my life but its all part of the experience. I got into the city in the afternoon via the tube to Victoria station and search for my hostel. It took me a little while to find the place because of my reluctance to ask for directions (rookie error: just ask) but I finally managed.
I found out when I got there that since the booking was for 3 people, all 3 of us had to be there to check in. This sucked because I wanted to sleep and the other 2 only landed at 8.30 pm. This forced me into doing some sight seeing. By just walking around I saw Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, Parliament and Big Ben. I didn’t even know it was Big Ben I just thought it was a pretty big clock and that it would be bigger. It was only when a 2 tourists asked me to take a photo of them in front of Big Ben when I realised I was there….I’m a pretty good tourist. By the time I made it back to the hostel there were little specks of snow falling which marked the first time I have ever been around real snow.
After a pretty eventful first day, we met up with a friend living in London from back home. She took us around and went on the London Eye which was really cool. It was awesome to have some one local to show us some of the ins and outs of the city. The best part of the day was going to the Borough Markets, near the London bridge. The food was amazing and you could fill yourself up just on free samples alone but I decided to splurge on a duck sandwich which was delicious!
We did go out to a club called Fabric. Apparently the number 3 club in the world. It met all expectations, loud dub step and drum and bass, uni-sex toilets(all trendy places have them I swear!) girls dressed up and girls with fake tan and too much make up. The douchebags took it to the next level though, I saw several guys wearing sunglasses inside and who decided to go shirtless…cool look bro (it’s literally freezing outside!). Douchebags: they’re global. Despite this, I still a pretty damn good time and am really glad I went. Even though its not my kinda thing I would have regretted not having a London club experience.
The rest of the week consisted of art galleries, parks, gigs shopping which were all really fun but I’m too lazy to get into. I was mostly with my two friends for the week but there were also times where I did my own thing. I think will do me well for the next 3+ weeks in Spain as they are off Paris and Rome.
Oh and it also consisted a lot of Arsenal but that deserves a whole Nick Hornby-esque post on its own. What I will say though is I went to the Gunners Pub for the Champions League and drank with some German Gooners by random chance which was a real highlight (the match was poo). I will hopefully see them along my travels again!
On reflection as I sit in the airport waiting to go to Madrid, London is a great city to visit but just from a week it felt like it is also a good place to live. Definite food for thought.
Travel tip: bring a Chapstick
Travel tip 2: don’t try and do too much, it will catch up with you Side note: Nike blazers are sweet. Will definitely be the next pair I buy
Mile High Cinema
It was a long journey to London, around 17.5 hours. A sensible person would have tried to get as much sleep as possible but I managed to fit 3 movies and a few podcasts in. The 3 movies were 'The perks of being a wallflower', 'Premium Rush' and 'The shining'. Perks is a great movie that I probably want to watch again because the sound was terrible. After watching it, I think when a girl asks me what music I'm into it I'm going to say 'the Smiths' straight away she will think I'm deep and dark. I really only know one of their songs because it was used for the opening credits of 00s hit series Charmed. Premium Rush was terrible. Do not watch. The Shining was good but I was dead tired by that stage and the sound wasn't great through the headphones.
The List
I mulled over what to bring on the trip quite a bit but tried to keep it to a bare minimum. Hopefully I’ll be able to look back on it at the end of it all to decide what I really needed to pack and forgot and what was completely unnecessary.
1 down jacket 1 rain jacket 2 long sleeved shirts 1 party shirt (essential) 1 jeans 1 chinos 1 trackies 2 borroca sticks Every pair of jocks and socks I own 6 t-shirts 1 thongs/jandals 2 jumpers 100 condoms (custom made for my massive dong)
Leaving Day
It's been just over a month since I have left 'Straya for Singapore. Now it is finally time to head for Europe. A few notes:
I think I have regressed a bit since coming back. I was fairly independent in Sydney and having to deal with things such as work, laundry, cooking and rent. For the moment though I have gone back to computer games, movies, mum or my auntie doing the cooking and laundry. I've definitely enjoyed a bit too much so I'm looking forward to getting a bit of independence back. Needless to say I will be complaining about it in a week or two.
Planning sucks the soul out of you. Definitely going to make sure it is worth it.
Universal studios and Uniqlo are awesome.
Singapore isn't too bad. Before coming here I was very skeptical of it as a place to live but after heading out a couple of times...not too shabby. If the right opportunity came up it would be hard to say no.
Australia you are SO expensive.
