“I do what I can, here, Sheriff,” he gave Adrian a smile, before nodding, still listening to his concerns. Levi cared about the safety of the town now, because of Skye and Roman. But he also cared about the safety of the town because he wanted to look good at doing his job. “You know, I thought about that, too. But the thing is, with information like that, we don’t know how they’re gonna react. And the reaction could cause more damage. We don’t want a Salem situation. But—I do see how it might be better to let em know, too.”

“That’s true. It just feels wrong, to keep this a secret when knowing how to better protect themselves could save their lives.” He sighs. The last thing he wants is to tell the public the truth just to have them try and kill his family and friends. “At the very least, the rest of the department needs to know. We can’t implement a proper protocol to deal with supernatural happenings if we can’t give it to all of the officers. But I want them all to undergo new psych evaluations first so we can figure out where their heads are at.” He definitely doesn’t need anyone using this as an excuse to go dirty. The goal is to protect Mystic Falls - all of Mystic Falls, human and supernatural.

“Probably a good thing, too, I’d have kicked your ass back then just like I could kick it now.” She poked her tongue out, grinning at the thought. Astrid was trying to lift the mood but she knew she’d set the worry in stone the second she tried to hide what she was doing from him. “Yeah. Aila had one but…” She shrugged, obviously, she couldn’t ask Aila about it. “I just hate it, A. Seeing her go through that pain every month, it breaks my heart.” Astrid teared up, just thinking about the full moons she’d spent trying to ease Alice’s pain as much as she could. “I’d follow any lead for a fix. I’m not saying I want her to deny her wolf side, I just don’t want a six-year-old girl to suffer every month when she’s suffered enough already. Turning reminds her of all her trauma.” She sighed, shook her head and smiled. “I know, thank you. I don’t need anything, not yet anyway.”

“Only because back then I would have been a good big brother and let you,” he retorts, though in truth he’s pretty sure that, at the very least, the two of them would have been evenly matched. Adrian’s all but ready to insist the doesn’t go, but when she explains what it’s for - who it’s for - he knows he couldn’t tell her no. Hell, if it were Piper in Alice’s shoes, he would be doing the exact same thing. There’s nothing either of them wouldn’t do when it comes to their daughters. “I get it,” he says with a sigh, “I do. I won’t stop you. Just - be careful, A. She doesn’t need to lose anybody else.” With that he wraps an arm around her neck, pulling her into him for a hug. “Neither does Piper, and neither do I.”

caroline returns adrians nod with one of her own, offering him a smile. “ooh, i mean they both look delicious but i think i’ll have to go for.. chocolate. chocolate is the best, right?” caroline said, attention turning back to piper scrunching her nose a little. “did you make these yourself?” she asked taking one of the cookies from the container and taking a bite.

“Chocolate is the best. Daddy likes vanilla, but that’s because he’s a weirdo.” Piper says, looking up at her father and sticking her tongue out when he gives her an affronted look. “Hey!” He says, reaching out to ruffle up her hair with a little chuckle. “That’s not nice.” Piper relents. “Okay, fine. You’re funny and not weird.” Quickly turning her attention back to Caroline, she smiles again. “No, silly, I got them at the store! They were on sales.”

“He means well to who? You know what, never mind.” She didn’t care to know the answer because it was so much easier to see him as a total asshole. “No this is fine.” She sucked in a breath. She hadn’t thought this through, she had no idea what or how she was going to say any of it. “So this is kinda a bumpy ride…” She leaned her back against the wall. “I’m the way I am because there’s a coven in Massachusetts that does unethical things. I was made by human parents but when myself and my twin were in the womb, they used a blood moon as sacrificial magic to try and create witch babies from human blood. They only semi-failed. I can see dead but no magic and my twin could do fire magic but nothing extreme.” She began to explain. “We were raised believing they were our family until I saw our dead mum as a ghost and she told us everything. We escaped with our lives but they hunted us. My sister died from overheating which led to a heart attack on our 21st birthday.” She gently touched her necklace but not summoning her sister for this. “I had to continue so I kept moving around and got my degree and ended up here.” She moved her hand to the back of her neck and scratched nervously. “What I didn’t know was that the coven have been trying to spread their ideals to other covens around the states and in particular, the witches in New Orleans. This week, one of the witches found me and stabbed me in my side. I would have died if it wasn’t for my friend flagging it up to his boss that runs New Orleans. His boss saved my life with vampire blood but I was lucky. They’ve gone back to New Orleans to try and stop the witches from rising up I guess but what I’m saying is…” She paused to think. “I don’t know. I guess I’m not safe? And I wanted you to be aware that there may be witches in town that may not have the best ideals for humans and supernatural alike.”

“I’m listening.” Adrian carefully takes in everything that Melody details about her past and the recent attack, his fist clenching and unclenching at his side when she says she guesses she’s not safe. Taking a deep breath, he pinches the bridge of his nose with two fingers and closes his eyes for just a moment. It’s definitely as bumpy of a ride as Melody said, but his main concern is neutralizing the current threat to her - if they need to unpack all of the family trauma, that can be done when she’s safe. And if her ‘boss’ friend has New Orleans handled, that means he can focus his attention on the potential witches here in Mystic Falls trying to murder Melody and do who knows what else to the other residents. God, he needs to remember to add Excedrin to his shopping list if he wants to make it through the rest of the year. Or at the very least, set a better example for the department so that maybe they’ll come to him immediately with these kinds of things. “Right. Well, I wish you’d told me as soon as it happened, but there’s nothing we can do about that now. You’re getting a full-time plainclothes detail until this problem is solved - and that’s an order, not a request. The one who stabbed you, did they get handled or do I need to have you sit down with one of the sketch artists?”

“That and you’re not Levi too.” She chuckled. “Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Any idea what actually caused them all to go insane?” It all just seemed so out of the blue that she had a strong feeling that he wouldn’t know the answer to the question but it was worth asking. She hesitated from speaking to Adrian about her most recent incident but at the end of the day, he was the sheriff and as far as she knew, the witch was still out there or there could be more. “Hey, er, Adrian, can I speak to you about something in private?”

“He’s not all bad. A little rough around the edges, sure, but he does mean well.” Adrian rationalizes. Despite the fact that most people wouldn’t be so close with their former opponent, Adrian really does believe that he and Levi - and everyone at the station - want the same things. “’Course,” he says, closing the door behind them. “Is this okay, or should we go to my office?” He asks, clearly concerned. It’s not often Melody requests privacy, or brings the personal into the workplace, so naturally he worries when this gets brought up.

“Anytime. And I get it. It feels like you ain’t doing enough. But with the resources around here, I don’t think anyone could do better. Even me. And I mean that,” he said sincerely, before pressing his lips together, with a nod. “There is a point. You gotta remember. The point is our kids. The point is to not let the next disaster get to them. To make sure for the other parents, shit doesn’t happen to their own.”

Adrian nods, feeling not as though the burden they’ve been trying to bear is any less, but that his shoulders are just a little better at bearing it. “You’re right. Thanks, man.” He claps Levi on the back, before sitting back and grabbing the folder that had previously agitated him. “Covering all this stuff up, though... it makes me wonder if the town would be better off knowing the truth. I mean, if we could devote as much time to coming up with ways to defend this place as we have to to covering up whatever happens next, couldn’t we be doing way more good?”

caroline looked up from her phone at the last moment and managed to avoid a collision with the little girl. “no, i’m sorry. i was too busy on my phone and i almost made you drop all of your beautiful cookies.” she slid her phone into her pocket and gave the little girl a smile. “i would love a cookie, as long as you don’t mind sharing?” caroline just loved children, and she couldn’t help but melt around them. she thought about the day that she and stefan would finally have a child of their own.

“I don’t mind!” Piper confirms, beaming as she holds out the container. Adrian smiles as he watches her offer them towards Caroline, and he gives her a nod in greeting. When he can he tries not to interrupt Piper, as Callie had always wanted to make sure Piper had the chance to come into her own on her own. “Those ones have vanilla icing, and those ones have chocolate,” Piper explains, still holding out the container.

“I knew there was a good reason I voted you for Sheriff.” She smiled to him and unshamingly took the food from his hand and opened it up to start eating. She also knew that Levi wouldn’t be this considerate to the people in the morgue despite how many extra hours Melody put in to her job. “Thank you!” She managed to just swallow the first mouthful before thanking him. “Any idea how you guys are going to cover this one up?” She wasn’t there for forging morgue documents - that was all Randall. She filled out the correct ones for the sheriffs eyes only (unless he chose to share them with anyone).

“And here I thought it was the sound policy points,” Adrian teases her, trying not to laugh as she practically inhales the sandwich. He can’t blame her - she’s pulled more overtime than half of the guys on patrol since the vampires went crazy. It’s a miracle some of them have remembered to eat at all. “Levi and I have been talking about that. Frontrunner right now is that there was a chemical leak that caused hallucinations and violent actions. It seems kind of implausible, but at this point I think people might just believe anything other than the truth.”

“Well- yeah. But I mean, we’re a little old for this type of sibling fight, no? I’m going and you can’t stop me.” She lifted a brow, slightly amused by the idea that he might actually try to stop her. Though, it wasn’t funny, she didn’t want him to worry. “I’m meeting with someone who might know where to find a moonlight ring. Or at least, the moonstone. I mean any lead at this point would be good.” Astrid knew she wouldn’t have to explain why. “It’s about half-hour out of town and his character is a little questionable, apparently, but I can handle myself. Apparently, if he gives me the info, I just have to owe him a favour. And I know, that’s… Weird. I don’t know what it means, either. But I can take care of myself.”

“I’d agree with you, but we didn’t exactly get to do this all that much when we were the right age.” Adrian says, pleased that they’re both still at least a little amused at whatever’s going on right now. Better that than angry, which can happen all too often when one wolf gets involved in an argument, let alone two of them. “The moonstone?” He asks, his brow furrowing at the term. It tugs at something in his memory - the word sounds familiar, but he can’t place it. “That... definitely sounds suspicious. And I know you can take care of yourself, but that doesn’t mean I have to like this. Will you at least let me know if there’s anything I can do to back you up? You’re not the only one with connections, you know.”

He had to say, he liked this, though, despite the piles of work that never seemed to get done, or solved. He liked sitting with Adrian. It was a kind of solidarity, a camaraderie he hadn’t really felt since the Marines. It was genuine, unlike his trips with previous hunting ‘friends’. “Hey, you an’ I both know that you’re doin’ the best you can.”

“Thanks, man,” Adrian allows a smile, grateful for the support. If only he could be satisfied with his best effort, rather than feeling the intense need to do better, do more. “Days like these just make it feel like there’s no point, you know? As soon as we get a handle on one disaster, another one shows up. No one taught this place how to deescalate.” He chuckles grimly.

caroline had enjoyed a low-key july 4th celebration, the last thing that stefan needed was to be overwhelmed by the large celebration crowds and fireworks, so they had stayed in. she was kind of glad about that, she was feeling extremely protective of her husband and wanted to keep him to herself as much as possible, as selfish as that was. eventually the celebrations came to an end and things went back to normal. caroline was just hoping that the grocery store still had food on the shelves, because stocks were low in the forbes-salvatore household. she was on her way there, walking through the town square and scrolling through the social media apps on her phone, hardly paying attention to the people around her.

Piper wasn’t the world’s biggest July 4th fan - too many loud noises - and Adrian tended to agree. Both were grateful it was over, though Piper seemed a bit more excited about the discount on themed sweets than she was about the decrease in fireworks. They were headed back from the grocery store, Adrian’s arms laden with sensible groceries whereas Piper’s little hands clutched at a container of red white and blue cookies, when they ran into one of the other officers at the station. The run in was mercifully figurative, as Piper almost literally knocked into Caroline’s legs before she looked where she was going and leapt out of the way with a squeak. “Sorry!” She chirped, looking up to catch Adrian’s approving nod at her manners. “Do you want a cookie?”

The station had been swamped all week after whatever made the vampires go crazy had finally dissipated, and between the two of them Levi and Adrian had mountains of paperwork and unsolved case files to deal with. “Not to sound too pessimistic,” Adrian begins, words a bit muffled due to the pen gripped between his teeth, “but I’m beginning to see why no one wants this job.” / @fertilelevi

“Unless you have alcohol or food you’re willing to share, do not talk to me right now.” It felt like the first time she had sat down all weekend. With all the vampires seemingly going crazy all at the same time, it resulted in a lot of dead bodies and a lot of work for Melody. Clearly, she wasn’t happy about.

“I come in peace,” Adrian says, holding up his free hand - the other was occupied with a wrapped sandwich. “Chavez brought food from the Grill. I figured I would grab you one before they ran out - you’ve been wrapped up, understandably.”

“Huh. It does sound interesting, actually. I might have to put it on the list. Though, I don’t give myself a lot of time to sit and read lately, bouncing from one place to the next before crash landing in bed seems to be a pattern.” Mila grinned, keeping her voice quiet enough not to disturb Piper. “You know what they say about all work and no play, right?” She chuckled, glancing around with a light shrug of her shoulders. “At least you picked a nice day for it. Even if your daughter has decided sleep is more exciting.” Mila teased.

“You should give it a try. At full risk of sounding too nerdy, it’s my favorite hobby. I read every night before bed - it helps me quiet my head down.” Callie had always found it amusing that Adrian was the bigger reader out of the two of them, even though she had originally been an English major and he’d never had much interest in college. “They also say that brand-new sheriffs should do their jobs as best they can so the public doesn’t feel like they made a bad choice.” He chuckles. “To be fair, this is naptime, and I read her to sleep most nights. Can’t really fault her brain for thinking its time to sleep, you know?”

“Thanks, tell her I won’t be too late and if she decides what she wants for dinner just text me.” Astrid smiled. She didn’t want to linger but at the same time if she just took off after saying she had a couple hours to spare she knew that would look even more off. Instead, she walked over to the fridge to help herself to some water, closing the door slowly as she narrowed her eyes at him. “Why?” Astrid wondered. He didn’t usually ask her where she was going, which saw to her sighing and rolling her eyes. Was she that obvious? “I can’t tell you.” She decided to start with that. “If I tell you, you’ll do one of two things. Say I’m dumb or try to stop me. Probably both.” She frowned, knowing she wasn’t really inspiring a lot of confidence.

“Will do.” Adrian crosses his arms as Astrid narrows her eyes - he’s really got the protective older brother thing down, if he does say so himself - and feels his eyebrows raise when she says she can’t tell him. If she thought he would give up after that, it had to be wishful thinking, because she knew him better than that. “You are aware that makes me want to let you go even less, right?” He scoffs. “You should tell me, for safety’s sake at least. I promise I won’t try and stop you - that hard. No promises on not calling you dumb, though.” That last part was a joke, but only that part.
