Twilight Out Of Focus 2: Afterimages In Slow Motion Manga Review

I think people have a misconception about enemies-to-lovers stories. Enemies-to-lovers story require both parties to hate each other’s guts and also be on opposing sides or have opposing mindsets; basically an antagonist x protagonist pairing. Afterimages in Slow Motion is not an enemies-to-lovers story at all. Instead, it feels more like a rivals-to-lovers story to me; the first chapter even points out that Jin and Giichi have a rivalry over their perception of film. Other than that, Giichi is affable by nature and doesn’t hate Jin at all.

The second volume of the Twilight Out of Focus series stars film club president Jin Kikuchihara, a pompous and narcissistic third-year, who approaches film with the perspective that he has to do everything to appease others, but he also has a crew and Giichi Ichikawa, Mao’s fudanshi friend and fellow film club member who is very passionate about film making that it often gets him butting heads with the third years. One day, during their constant fights, they accidentally kiss each other and it leads to a romance where Jin starts crushing hard on Giichi after learning he is his new temporary roommate. He learns about a softer, sensitive side to Giichi that he only sees in their room and falls for both the prickly and the sensual side of him. 

What’s unusual about this volume is that the story is mainly from Jin’s perspective and he’s the top. Usually, BL stories have to where the perspective character is usually the bottom. While the main perspective of the previous volume has been Mao, who is the bottom of the Twilight pair, the Slow Motion pair is focused on Jin, who is the top. To be honest, I like that! Jyanome proves that they know how to give focus to a new character while giving a deeper insight to a character we already know, which would be Giichi. I feel like the first few chapters wouldn’t work had Giichi been the main perspective character. Jin’s perspective gives insight to his deeper thoughts like if he’s going to continue with his passions after graduating and his relationship with his friends. Basically, the moral of this volume is that not everyone appears the way they are at first glance. Jin seems arrogant and narcissistic, but he’s very wishy-washy and a people pleaser. He’s also quite wimpy, which is Jyanome’s favorite type of tops, according to their interview with BL with Akiko.

Like with the previous volume, this one is practically verbatim with their anime episodes, so I don’t really have anything to criticize. I guess my only gripe is that they didn’t animate the bonus chapter because I wanted to see Jin resting his head on Giichi’s lap as the latter strokes his head and it would’ve been nice to see just how tight-knit the third-year film crew are.

While this isn’t my favorite pair, I do understand why this is the most popular of the three because of how they gradually fall in love and how they bounce off each other well. Still, Jyanome really knows how to write pairs that match so well. Mao and Hisashi from the previous volume are compatible and Jin and Giichi are the same! Like with the first volume, this one is also good in terms of storytelling, so I hope you give the series a chance!
