Battle Roles

“Those originals are somewhat rare now to encounter. But Takado still manages to keep the bulk of his army filled with these more conventional mass-spawning dûgz.”— Ryoma

No two Octolings are alike, but the rank-and-file troops in the Black Valley’s armies share some characteristics.

Grunts are Octolings who are born from the kettles and received modicum battle-training and are sent into battle with basic arms and armor. They make up the bulk of the Black Valley’s armies.

Hunters practice endlessly with their spears, in melee and at range, and are capable of bringing down Fishes and Inklings alike.

Savages wield two axes and are used as shock troops, flinging themselves headlong into battle.

Defenders tend to be larger, stronger Octolings — a necessity given their heavy shields and long pole-arms.

The Octolings who ply the Assassin’s trade decapitate their enemies’ leadership — often literally. Masters of subterfuge and stealth, Assassins favor ambush tactics that leave a priority enemy dead before its retinue even knows what happened.

Assassin Octolings rarely last long unless they master the art of escape as well, fading into the shadow or fleeing faster than their pursuers. Their ability to hide is so peerless that they can be difficult to spot, even in the Wraith World.
