Miami, August 1942 -- Newly inducted Corporal Clark Gable "loses his mustache to Uncle Sam," having been informed upon enrolling in the Army Air Forces Officer Candidate school that regulations forbid anyone less than a first lieutenant to sport a mustache. Gable immediately went to a barber shop, where half of his mustache was shaved off by the barber. Then, "for the benefit of news cameramen," the former actor finished off the job himself.
